Well back on the topic concerning your latest purchases...

I was able to score on the (fairly) cheap just the DVD from the Be Bop Deluxe: Sunburst Finish box set.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

I can't say with 100% certainty but I don't see why it would, as there is no change to the firmware or the disc drive, but I suppose that if it did cause an issue, removing it should resolve the problem.

Well the plot thickens on this purchase and in a way it's a good thing. The In Search of the Last Chord Deluxe "2 SACD" set arrived today. What I found is it's actually a 2 CD set and not the 2 SACD set the listing indicated. At first I thought I screwed up twice on the same purchase ordering the 2 CD deluxe set. But when I checked my purchase order listing on Discogs it does in fact say "2 SACD Deluxe set".

The set I received is the set linked below. In the listing it states "This release has been blocked from sale in the marketplace. It is not permitted to sell this item on Discogs.". So in a way this purchase error will turn out to be a return and refund from the Discogs seller .

Well the plot thickens further, almost as thick as my head ! The discs, case and booklet do not have the SACD logo anywhere. That led me to believe it was a 2 CD set not the 2 SACD set. Well wouldn't you know that when I popped disc 1 in my Oppo it is in fact an SACD. I should have tried playing the discs first before going off half cocked. What a dope once again !

There is no surround mix, just stereo. If I read the full Discog listing for the 2 SACD set I would have seen this...

Note: despite the credits in the booklet there is no 5.1 mix available on the SACD as there never was a Quad version of this album. The SACD layer contains only high resolution stereo program.

The interesting thing is there is mention in the booklet that the 5.1 mix was manipulated from the original quad mix. Which of course is not correct. But there is no mention anywhere in the booklet about the discs being SACDs. As mentioned earlier the SACD logo is not on the discs, the case or booklet. I have a number of SACDs and can not recall any that do not have the SACD logo on the discs.

There are SACDs that are available only in certain geographic areas. For example, the Genesis SACDs are not "officially" available in the US because the band is signed to the Warner Music group here in the US, which backed the DVD-A format back then. Therefore, no Genesis SACDs for the US.

Same arrangement goes for Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler.

Then there are SACDs which are released only in certain geographic areas, with no alternative hi-res version anywhere else. Such as the SHM-SACDs from japan Universal Music.

Of course, one can get around these restrictions on the 'net.

I find the SQ on ISOTLC to be superior to DOFP. The Orchestra SQ on DOFP is noticeably better than that of the band. The soundstage of the Stereo ISOTLC is wide and deep. I would have preferred 4.0 or 5.1 but the Stereo is impressive.

There is a 5.1 mix on the 50th Anniversary SACD - http://www.moodybluestoday.com/searc...rsary-reissue/ - but it seems like you got ... I'm not sure what. The previously released Stereo SACD? With the new booklet?

Interesting...

I got the Dire Straights and a couple Knopfler SACDs from Amazon (not 3rd party sellers) though, and for pretty cheap (<$15). Are those imports then? I guess I could look for myself...

If your SACD was released by Vertigo / Mercury Records / Universal Music, that's an import.

The US got the DVD-Audio / Dualdisc version....

The only official SACD of "Brothers In Arms" in the US is the Mobile Fidelity version....

Bill, I know you are just relating the general tenor on QQ about the 50th ISOTLC & not offering an opinion.
The reviews on SHF have been much more positive.

I visit QQ daily and sometimes I feel the members there can be just as persnickety as SHF.
As the name of the forum is Quad there are a lot of folks there rooted in quad surround & still prefer it to 5.1.
Sgt. Pepper was widely reviled there as is Giles Martin. Although he's been somewhat elevated after The WA.
I just don't get it

As the name of the forum is Quad there are a lot of folks there rooted in quad surround & still prefer it to 5.1.
Sgt. Pepper was widely reviled there as is Giles Martin. Although he's been somewhat elevated after The WA.
I just don't get it
Milt,

Thanks for pointing out that there is a difference of opinion of the In Search of the Last Chord 5.1 mix. I'll have to check out the thoughts on the Steve Hoffman forum.

In all honesty I haven't noticed an anti 5.1 sentiment over at the QQ forum. But I really don't spend that much time over there.

I've been involved in several threads there about system set up\components, formats.
I wouldn't say anti 5.1 but more that quad is superior.

Bill, I know you're a rather prolific collector & it's easy to spend other people's money but the 5.1 ISOTLC is available fairly cheaply.
I wouldn't normally inject myself but ISOTLC is a special album.
Just a thought.

When what to my wondering eye did appear?
A package of disc's that I ordered last year!

The Allman Brothers Band - The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings 5.1 Blu-Ray
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 5.1 SACD
Simon & Garfunkel - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme Stereo SACD

Glad I never blew the big bucks on the Pink Floyd disc before this reissue. Hopefully, other OOP releases will follow.

Other than as part of a $50 package, how else is the 5.1 mix available. Or are we thinking $50 is “fairly cheap?”

Typically, chamber orchestra music is not my first choice genre, but took a chance on this selection and found myself pleasantly surprised!

Meticulously recorded production that opens up the sound with fantastic results on my 7.3.4 system.

This is stunning classical recording- maybe best I have ever heard from sonic perspective - What a massive soundstage and detailed presentation - I played this back quite loud and goosebumps quality - I'm more of classical tourist but with more recordings like this
would definitely be increasing library

Thanks! I checked mine finally and it's a German import (that I bought cheap from Amazon 12 years ago) in the cool SACD style case.

I found this DVD-ROM on eBay recently and couldn't resist. From Chesky, it contains the original studio master files, 24/192 WAV. There were reportedly a number of these released around 2008/2009 but this was quickly abandoned. Burned on demand DVD-R disc.

I got the box for under $40, like ~$37.
I pre-ordered hoping for the best as in many cases, right?
I'm admittedly a hi-rez lossless bigot.
Bought the King Crimson On\Off the Road box to get the 24/96 versions vs 24/48 versions but that's because, like the Moody Blues, King Crimson belongs in the basic repertoire.

Depending on the release, I'm a skeptic on the 24/96 vs 24/192 thing.
To me the hierarchy is recording>mixing>mastering>bit depth.
I treat every disc\download as a different decision.
I rarely if ever opt for the 24/192 vs 24/96 on sites like HDTracks.
Different story on Pono.

Qobuz for US is in beta now.
Can't wait.

I am suspicious of the sudden and unexplained appearance of large libraries of high sampling rate/deep bit depth music, and I am suspicious of the mix on ISOTLC as well. The provenance is sketchy.
