I picked mine up used, and the Jewel case is in excellent condition. The two disc's are stored on top of each other. Is that the same as you guys?

Agree that this is not a reference set to show off surround sound. Good music, none the less.

Live concerts almost never will have a studio quality surround mix. Live concert mic setup in general and instrument isolation are usually far less than optimal. Personally, I am happiest when the front soundstage is clean and well-defined and the rear helps create a sense of envelopment that approximates the venue.

Touring bands in the 70’s couldn’t pull off live quad without it being gimmicky. I suppose the altered states of the concert goers compensated .. hey man cool man ... but it was still gimmicky. Keep the musicians on the stage!

The correct double SACD case should have a tray that swings open with the discs held in place on either side of the tray. It's not a Super Jewel case but a standard double CD case. I have a few Super Jewel cases that have a taller spindle that holds two SACDs in place. I much prefer the Super Jewel double disc cases as there are less moving parts that can break. The double CD cases that swing open are flimsy and always break in due time.

I just checked mine and you're right, it's a standard SACD jewel case with the two discs stacked on top of each other (yuck). I think the Depeche Mode 101 is the only double SACD jewel case I have then, although I'm not even sure about that (and I don't have it handy to check).

Anyhoo... I picked these up since my last splurge:

BB King & Eric Clapton - Riding with the King (DVD-A, used)
Chicago - Quadio box set (blu-ray)
Coldplay - Head Full of Dreams (blu-ray)
Doors - The Singles (blu-ray)
Mark Knopfler - Sailing to Philadelphia (SACD, used)
Soundgarden - Superunknown box set (blu-ray)
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger box set (blu-ray)

If you want to replace all or parts of a SACD case, you're looking for the "Super Jewel Case (Box)". Be aware that the depth of the hinge inset on the front cover can vary so retail artwork inserts may not fit exactly.
DVD-A also used the "Super Jewel Box" in DVD size. All these are still available if you hunt a bit.

The early Super Jewel cases had the narrow hinge which was quickly changed to the larger hinges because they were so fragile. The narrow cases are impossible to find today unless you luck out in a thrift shop or used CD store.

ALL of the Super Jewel cases are more easily prone to cracks. The plastic seeme to be a lot more fragile than a regular CD case. The only place I ever got replacements that didn’t have some cracks was Music Direct -when they shipped them in a box. Anything shipped in a bubble or ravioli mailer is inviting trouble.

Thanks, I may look for one as I have one or two that are cracked, but the rest are all good luckily, considering how hard they are to find.

Yeah, I hate how the super jewel case/box have different versions. They do look cooler though and I love having them as part of my collection since I put all my SACD/DVD-A/blu-ray surround albums in jewel cases (I buy the album new or used, ditch the CD and replace it with the surround disc... wasteful yes, but worth it since I can keep my entire collection in jewel cases and easily access them in my CD racks).

God, it never ends...

Recently purchased:

Bryan Adams - Reckless (blu-ray, used)
Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion (SACD, used)
Depeche Mode - Exciter (SACD, used)
Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel (SACD, used)
Elvis - 30 #1 Hits (DVD-A)
Outkast - Stankonia (DVD-A, used)
T. Rex - Electric Warrior (SACD, used)
Toto - IV (SACD, used)

Notes: Sucks having to buy the Elvis DVD-A again but my last sealed/new copy was defective. Also sucks having to buy T. Rex again but gotta have that classic in MC. Finally have all the DM 5.1 albums (the rest I bought in 2007). Toto IV is the most I've paid for a stand alone MC disc (over $100, ouch).

I did not “fan” Jeff Beck back in the day, but i have come to appreciate him recently. He is far, far from just another 60’s/70’s rock guitarist.

I became a fan of Jeff Beck the moment I heard Blow By Blow. I'm listening to the outstanding The Jeff Beck Group AF 4.0 SACD as I type. The volume is at the point of causing permanent hearing damage !

If you want to see how well regarded Jeff Beck is by his peers watch the "Jeff Beck- Still On The Run" documentary. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour and others rave about his playing and his place in rock n' roll as one of the greatest guitarists ever. I loved the quote from David Gilmour when he said that Richard Wright told him Jeff Beck was his favorite guitarist. David said something like "to my dismay" .

3 weeks is pretty good! I'm lucky if I make 3 days. It's odd because I figure I shouldn't have that much more to get at this point, but there's always new music to "discover" (read: justify a purchase).

Thanks, lots of good stuff in this last haul, including Bryan Adams. I listened to it only once so far but I was rather impressed actually. Maybe because I had low expectations but I thought the MC mix was well done: discrete and with good use of surrounds. I've been meaning to get around to listening to it again. Oh wait, you meant Ryan Adams! I just realized that.

Actually I just received those today and haven't listened to them yet because I unhooked my sound system to do some black wall painting today (for HT purposes) but will get it hooked up again tomorrow and take a listen to them. I've been eagerly awaiting them as I like his material (unfortunate that he's been in the news lately as a reportedly unsavory fellow).

I listened to Rock n' Roll last night and it sounded pretty good, although not a particularly stand out MC mix. I think Rock n' Roll and Gold are his only two surround albums?

YES! The MoFi version is much more dynamic and punchy!! It's a significant difference.

Having said that I sold my Esoteric SACD setup, and switched to a Lyngdorf TDAI-3400 all-in-one integrated that should be arriving this week.

I'll be using a Roon Nucleus + with all of my Roon end points throughout the house, so I need to figure out the best way to rip my SACD's to DSF to take full advantage.
