^^^ LOL, Bill Mac, the ultimate collector. Owning every one of each Oppo player.

I have two in service, one gifted to my father, and a fourth in the closet, and I thought that was excessive.

But I don't have the 95 yet . Not excessive just having a vision towards the future .

Picked up recently and currently enjoying Petshop Boys - Inner Sanctum. Bluray concert in DTS 5.1. Wish I could enjoy it at a louder volume. It's a nice mix and the PQ is great

Man, I would love some Pet Shop Boys, OMD, New Order, Erasure, etc. in surround. That type of music is made for 5.1... at least we have all the Depeche Mode studio albums (except the newest one... yet) in surround. And they are so good.

Im missing Black Celebration SACD for my collection and Music 101. Black Celebration is always the most expensive for some reason. Usually over $125 used.

I yearn for some more 80s New Wave on SACD as well.

Holy cow!! Were they gifted to you or you paid for it? If you paid for it, curious how much you paid. In any case, that is a sizable collection to acquire at one time, congrats! Any particularly rare discs in there?

Thank you! I wish something like this would come as a gift ...I lucked out as there were many titles that were on my wish list and some new music to explore. Works out to about $12/disc, which for me was a great deal given the price of the discs I was looking for!

Not sure that there are any rare discs in there, however certainly a few that do not come up very often.

What I need to do next is get my collection organized and catalog them...started to use Discogs to do this

$12/disc is a heck of a deal!! Hope you got the MC versions of Doobie Brothers - Captain and Me and Foreigner - 4 (those alone would be worth upwards of $200 or more if in good condition). Lots of good MC in there, including Grateful Dead, Queen, Steely Dan, Who, Santana (Supernatural), Emmylou Harris, Police, BB King, Don Henly, Ryan Adams, etc.

I was curious about the Eric Clapton - There's One in Every Crowd, as that is only available as part of the Give Me Strength box set blu-ray (which includes the 461 Ocean Blvd quad/5.1 mixes). Hope you have that blu-ray!

I will know for certain once the discs arrive, however they are supposed to be the MC versions.

There are a few discs that I am not certain of, including the Clapton disc, will find out when they arrive. The seller was not 100% on all the details for each disc beyond confirming that they were all DVD-A.

Nice score for sure. The Clapton disc is actually probably the DTS CD, which are often mislabeled as DVD-A because they come in the same type of super jewel box (king).

Agreed

Also, I think the multi-channel versions of Santana, Abraxas and Don Henley, The End Of The Innocence are only available in DTS too...

Great, thanks guys, that makes things clear! How is the sound quality of a DTS vs DVD-A vs SACD?

Well.....

Technically you would have to compare the same mixed source encoded to the three different audio formats in question (ie: Lossy dts. Lossless pcm (mpl) and DSD) to determine a difference!

Although it's easy to get caught up in the technical differences of audio formats, the most important thing is to just enjoy the music

That's a tough question. I compared the Fleetwood Mac Rumours DVD-A and SACD 5.1 mixes quite awhile ago. My buddy and I could not tell any difference between the two. I'm listening to Dire Straits Brothers In Arms DualDisc (the DVD-A layer). For some reason I prefer the SQ of the DualDisc to the SACD. I haven't done a serious A-B comparison. But the DualDisc seems smoother than the SACD. Same 5.1 mix as far as I know.

The quality of the mix and mastering is far more important than the audio format IMO. I have some DTS-CDs that sound excellent. Also have some DVD-As and SACDs that don't sound that good even though they are supposed to be "hi-res".

Lyle Lovett's Joshua Judges Ruth is one of the best sounding 5.1 recordings I have and it's a DTS CD. It must have been recorded and mastered by someone who knew what they were doing as it sounded great on cassette and CD as well.

Is there only one version of the DTS CD for this album? After reading your post I purchased a copy on ebay and noticed that the super jewel box has a blue strip (that says "20 bit 5.1 surround") next to the hinge and at the top where there is the DTS logo in blue/white. But I also saw a different version on ebay that has the more traditional/common black bar at top with the DTS logo in red/white. Discogs has only one DTS CD which has a pic of the blue/white version and not the red/white one. Just curious if you or anyone knows if the two versions (the DTS CD itself) are the same.

Thanks Bill, always appreciate your insights...the mastering is definitely the key is what I am learning as well.

It may be a different cover based on region. I have seen this on many discs where the Europe version looks different than the US version and they are the same mix and even the same barcode sometimes.

Well said, we do get caught up in the technicalities more than enjoying the music at times!

Thanks, that seems the most likely explanation. I have a Doors CD from 2007 (40th anniversary release) that has two versions that are the same except that one (the U.S.) is in a standard jewel case whereas the other one (U.K.) version is in a super jewel box. But same release with same bonus tracks, same front/back cover, and same UPC code. That made it tricky finding the right version but luckily Discogs is helpful for that!

Making cut #1 on the Henley album DTS ES and then “dropping back” to straight DTS made it out impossible for me to enjoy the music.

You got my curiosity going so I did some googling. AIUI, Joshua Judges Ruth DTS-CD was originally released in 1992 with the blue markings. It was re-released in 1998 with the red markings. The 1992 and 1998 discs should be the same.

Thanks, that's interesting that DTS CDs came out that early (or earlier). I like Lyle Lovett generally and thought the album sounded good when I listened to it on youtube so that makes it a "must buy" for me! Luckily, I found a new copy on ebay.
