Here's a SACD sampler from Germany, brought to the world by Philips, Sony, and Universal Music. Each of the music snippets lasts less than 2 minutes.

My latest haul over the past month or so (all multichannel):

Beck - Guero (DVD-V)
Beck - Sea Change (blu-ray, used)
Blue Oyster Cult - Agents Of Fortune (SACD, used)
Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties (SACD)
Bonne Raitt - Nick Of Time (DVD-A, used)
Bryan Ferry - Frantic (SACD)
Donald Fagen - Morph The Cat (DVD-V)
Eric Clapton - Reptile (DVD-A, used)
Foo Fighters - One By One (DVD-A, used) <<< I swore I would never buy a Foo Fighters album... but had to when I had nothing else to buy in surround!
Foreigner - Foreigner (DVD-A, used)
Foreigner - Foreigner 4 (SACD, used) <<< Flawless, too bad there was cigarette smoke smell on the booklet/inserts so I tossed them.
Ginuwine - The Life (SACD)
John Mayer - Heavier Things (DualDisc, used) <<< I also swore I would never buy a John Mayer album... but at least I got the cheap DualDisc version!
John Mayer - Room For Squares (DualDisc, used) <<< A bit more expensive than Heavier Things but still cheaper than the SACD version.
Kelly Rowland - Simply Deep (SACD) <<< Expensive but this one seems quite rare and it was new/sealed so I had to get it.
Marvin Gaye - Midnight Love (SACD) <<< Accidentally bought the stereo version first (sigh) but found a new/sealed copy which is flawless.
Living Colour - Collideoscope (DVD-A) <<< This is selling on ebay for $10 new/sealed!
Loggins & Messina - Full Sail (SACD) <<< Bought this again as the first new/sealed version had a big, ugly mark on it. New one is flawless.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Southern Surroundings (blu-ray) <<< Already own the DVD version but wanted the blu-ray version.
Lyle Lovett - Joshua Judges Ruth (DTS CD)
Nickel Creek - This Side (SACD)
Peter Gabriel - Up (SACD, used) <<< Bought this again as I didn't like the condition of the copy I bought last month.
Texas - Careful What You Wish For (SACD) <<< Bought this one again as I didn't like the condition of the one I bought last month.
Tom Petty - Damn The Torpedoes (blu-ray, used) <<< Got cigarette smoke smell but slowly diminishing over time by airing it out.

I have Breakaway but have yet to get Body Talk from George Benson. How is it?

I received an email from Dutton Vocalion today and there was some great news!

Our next batch of titles, due soon, comprise a tantalising selection of soul, Latin, jazz and rock reissues, all of which are in the SACD format. Full details will be sent nearer the time; meanwhile, keep an eye on the Vocalion website for updates.

Exciting news on the new titles from DV! Looking forward to the 'rock' titles.

I actually never heard of George Benson before picking up Songs and Stories from Monster Music. I really enjoy that one so thought I'd give Body Talk a go.

I report back after a listen. It's a DV order, so that may not be for month yet

Well I have spent the last 10 days on a concert binge...saw Tea Party, Snow Patrol, Elvis Costello, Neil Young and capped off with three days of Marillion in Montreal!!

Somewhere in between all that I picked up the Led Zeppelin - Celebration Day Blu-ray disc.

Will finally get to listening the DVD-A / DTS collection I picked up!

@Bill Mac ...is that truly your first copy of that disc? It was on your original recommendation that I picked up all the Elton John SACD's and they did not disappoint!!

I thought I had the Honky Chateau SACD but I didn't. It's become a bit pricey to find but found a copy at a very fair price. The only Elton John 5.1 SACD left to grab is Peachtree Road. Not familiar with that album but will grab it if I come across a copy. All of the Elton John 5.1 SACDs sound excellent !

Sadly though, there's no hint of a multi-channel release for [1972] Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player (which I'd buy for the title alone) and/or [1974] Caribo.

Yeah, totally sucks! I think they had initially planned to release more albums in 5.1, probably all of his early/classic albums at least and some newer ones too (which is how Peachtree Road was released I think as it came out around the time of the other SACD releases IIRC), but maybe the lackluster sales of the SACDs made them cancel those plans. Maybe with Rocketman coming out soon the label will finish the job and mix/release the other early albums (at least Don't Shoot Me, Caribou, and his first album, Empty Sky, and maybe Rock of the Westies which came out the same year as Captain Fantastic) on SACD.

edit: Here's an email from Greg Penny (the mixing engineer for the EJ 5.1 albums) that someone from the Steve Hoffman forum posted... 15 years ago. Seems like four other early albums (up to Blue Moves which came out in 1976, the year after Capt Fantastic and Rock of the Westies).

Thanks for the very kind words.
It is with great emotion, care and conviction that I move through these
masters, my favorite records of all time.
I was a true fan of Gus's and I often seek his help (sounds corny, I
know) in the decisions re: these surround remixes.
He allowed me to visit the GYBR sessions in France May 1973 and he
often paid us a visit when we were working in London on the more recent
albums.
Lovely cat !

The longer fade on Razor Face is fun, glad you dig it. It ends at the
bottom of the fade.

By the way, the Madman SACD review is very well written. It's great to
see someone pay that much attention.

Please get - EJ, Tumbleweed and Captain Fantastic. They're super cool !

As far as a stripped down version of Madman - When I did the "dMix" of
Candle In The Wind, everyone felt I was on to something good.
But rather than make it a formula, to do a dMix on each of the new
surround rereleases, I think there is a greater surprise to come at the
end of doing all the DJM/ Gus albums.
Without giving away a surprise or coming off too cryptic, there are
beautiful treasures hidden within the multitrack tapes and I hope to
bring them to the world. Soon...
Elton is in great form these days. He is incredibly enthusiastic and
supportive about the surround mixes.
Thanks for the vote on producing him again. He always includes me on
what's going on. It's a family and I'm ready to cook when it's my turn.

All the best to you.

Your site is great ! I look at it often !

Oh ! - I'm working on:

1. Don't Shoot Me
2. Caribou
3. Rock Of The Westies
4. Blue Moves

And tonight I'm mixing Step Into Christmas and Ho Ho Ho in surround.
'Tis the season !

Peace !

Is there industry talk of expanding surround music formats into Dolby Atmos/DTS:X or do companies feel there is not enough demand? I have not seen multi-channel streaming service which I think would be outstanding for home and auto use.

Sony announced a high-res, immersive streaming audio tech based on the mpeg-h 3D audio codec (comparable to DTS:X) at CES 2019. It's tentatively named '360 Reality Audio', and supposed to roll out in late 2019. We'll have to wait and see which AVR brands might provide decoders, but the mpeg-h 3D codec is already in use for the South Korean ATSC 3.0 tv service so all AVR brands in the South Korean market likely have licensed the code...?!

I've heard all of the multi-channel remixes work mentioned for the un-released EJ album have been completed. However, Universal Music thinks that releasing those multi-channel EJ albums on SACD will lose money. Which begs the question.....the money has been invested, the work has been done, so why not release the SACDs? By not releasing the SACDs, Universal is guarantee NOT to recoup its investment.

Unfortunately when it comes to the music companies it's all about the money. If it's not profitable then most likely it's not going to happen. Sad but true.

It's not a charity business, so that's what you would expect. On the other hand, if they see profits by investing in "x", because the demand is there, you can expect they will make it happen.

Received my latest Dutton Vocalion order this week.

Bill Mac asked about the George Benson: Body Talk disc.

While the mastering is up to expected DV standards, I found the quad mix pretty flat as it were. Instruments firmly planted in the speakers and not a real sense of space delivered up. The music is almost easy listening, something you might hear at the grocery store or on an elevator. Nothing terrible, but as I said the whole experience just left me a bit flat.

The Art Garfunkel: Breakaway album on the hand...superb.

I purchased the following discs this week.

Alan Parsons Project - Eye in the Sky (Blu Ray)
Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mystery and Imagination (Blu Ray)
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms (SACD)
Eric Clapton - Slowhand
Rush - 2112 (DVD-Audio)

Not exactly new releases, but that works just fine for me.
