So, after making the following 3 tweaks I greatly improved my bass response in terms of intensity and balance without needing to run things hot or use a house curve.

1. Boost wide dip in midbass centered around 62.5Hz in sub frequency response.

2. Set flatness target in REW EQ tool to 6dB and individual and overall max boost values to the same lowest value that fixes the dip with minimal boost and filter count. I only needed 4 relatively low Q filters in Low HT mode plus the usual 2 in Low Music to tame subsonic room gain.

3. Up crossover for fronts and center from 80Hz to 100Hz to fill in missing mid to upper bass in the front left and center channels. Sub distance tweak was no longer necessary once using the 100Hz crossover.

Now I have more super clean, tight mid to upper bass than I know what to do with and it is quite satisfying even at levels well below -30MV.

Just picked up from UPS Freight my dual FV18 paper cones! It wasn’t as bad as I thought wrestling each one by myself off the attached pallets (UPS used forklift to get into the bed of my Tundra). Boxes look good, I see no obvious external damage. I have a plan to get them into the house and down into the basement without picking them up so will report back later.

Feel like a kid at Christmas!

Cheers,
Ross

Hey fellow Chane owner! I look forward to letting you know how they mesh with the Chanes. I think it's going to be a great marriage, based on the Rythmik L22's that have been playing with my Chanes already. Both companies have a sound signature that is very very clean, neutral, and transparent, and I highly value that.

Thanks Ray! Your great comparison write-up pushed me over the edge and I'm glad. I was just thinking that these babies deserved a thread that might get a wider readership than just Rythmik owners (preaching to the choir) so I will absolutely post impressions in your thread. I hope to get these set up this Sunday.

----------------

Getting these 220-pound each (fully packaged weight) beasts from pickup bed into basement all by my lonesome was fairly easy - I backed the truck with tailgate open into garage a few inches from interior door so was able to slide the subs right into the house on top of furniture moving blankets, then pulled the subs on the blankets across kitchen floor and carefully/slowly down the stairs into basement. I could never hope to lift these by myself (perhaps @muscles could?) but thankfully sliding works like a charm.

Hope to update in two days. Until then some pics - is it just me or is that one handsome sub?!

Cheers,
Ross

I am really new to REW and have some general questions. I saved 3 configurations last night for my 2 subs. I have yet to make adjustments manually, and probably won't have time this weekend. I forgot to get an actual response using REW to see what ARCs settings really. The ARC report seems to look much better than what REW's response. However, I forgot to get my own measure using REW with ARC on and without the miniDSP for an actual comparison to really verify the report.

When I rerun ARC, do I just load the configuration and proceed as normal, or will the quick measure for subwoofer work? Since I have 3 configurations done, I'm assuming I'd rerun it for each configuration and save it under that name.

Once I make some adjustments manually, is it necessary to rerun ARC again, or should I wait till I am able to complete all the adjustments. I think it's going to take a lot of time to manually EQ them.

Just a very curious question on what would happen if you use it cold? I'm from so cal we have no cold weather but I always like to learn new things.

Possible condensation on the amp from when it goes from cold to warm.

Howdy folks,

My basement listening space is 10 ft wide, 8 ft high and I sit about 8 ft from the speakers. So the listening space is small, but behind me it opens to a recreation area and the stairs to one side. The total basement room is roughly 10' (w) x 28' (L) x 8' (H) + space for the stairs going up.

I currently have a pair of Sonus Faber floorstanding speakers which according to the spec goes to about 40 Hz. I am using a old sealed sub from Adire Audio (Rava) that is close to two decades old and I am looking to replace it. My need is 2-channel audio only, no HT. So I am looking at the sealed subs with either 12" or 15" driver. Do you think the 12" unit is going to suffice or do I need to get a15" one? My current sub uses a 12" Shiva driver and I get adequate level at my listening position with the gain knob at 11 o'clock. I have to have speaker level inputs as my tube amp does not have line-level out.

So I am looking at Rythmik or Hsu. If a 12" unit will be appropriate, then will the amp have enough headroom with the F12? If a 15" unit is appropriate, what do you think will suit my situation better: Hsu ULS-mkII or Rythmik E15? My current Rava subwoofer low passes at 12 dB/octave. I like the extra amp features on the Rythmik as it offers both 12 & 24 dB/octave. The Hsu provides only 24 dB/octave.

I called Ascend and Rythmik and they told me that given the length of the room being 28', F12 would not be enough. Do you agree? BTW, I am bit limited with space and I know that I cannot fit in two subs. When I setup my system in my basement, I experimented with sub placement and found that between L & R speakers and bit skewed to the left was the best compromise. The right front corner maid thing very boomy. The left front corner is not usable due to a wet bar there. If I take the current sub out and drop the new one in, would it still be the best compromise location although it is a different unit? Currently I cross in at 50 Hz and phase 0 and speaker level in.

Many Thanks!

What are G28HP's? Is that the 18" driver version of the G25HP? When will they be available for sale?

Is there any more info on those?

Thanks, Brian

@dandaroy ,

I agree. I would recommend 2xF12s for that space. I also think 24 dB/octave integrates better. Other options:

The HSU ULS-15 MK2 is probably the most sealed subwoofer you're going to get for its price.

The next most competitive in output for the dollar is the Rythmik L22, however it lacks speaker inputs being from the L line. You need the F series.

There is a more noticeable price disparity between the HSU and the sealed Rythmik F15HP, however the quality of the Rythmik is hard to beat.

You might also find you get better bass with a higher crossover frequency once the new sub arrives. I would try 80 Hz.

Based on your requirements of music only, space constraints, overall room size, and the fact that you have been happy with the output of your old 12" sub, I would suggest a single Rythmik E15 as your upgrade. You will get audiophile sound quality and dynamic output equal to dual F12's, the great amp controls, and a reasonably small size. I have owned HSU (ported) subs in the past and I still recommend them for movie use in a certain price range, but if highest quality music reproduction is desired it's Rythmik all the way IMO. I used to have an F12 in a very small room and I adored it. The more powerful E15 would surely satisfy.

And as Soulburner suggested, I would definitely try an 80Hz crossover. What a sealed Rythmik can do in that important 50-80Hz midbass range is something special, hitting very quick and impactful and never bloated or tubby.

I posted this out in the main subwoofer forum but figured I’d try here too. Will 2 Rythmik FVX12’s film a 4000 square foot room. There’s an open doorway leading down a very small hallway to our bedroom and the kitchen. My budget is 1500. I really want the FVX15’s but they are 500 more. I’m ready to order but wanted the opinion of this forum first.

Hard to say - there is no FVX12 on the website, so no information to go off of. Maybe soon.

If it helps, an LVX12 pair does 105.6 dB @ 20 Hz, so it's probably close to that.

The FVX12 info was added in our website more than a week ago:

Enrico what is your opinion on the situation? Do you think the 2 FVX 12’s would do the job?

I would get a FVX15 at least and save for the second instead of getting a pair of FVX12s right away.

I'll assume you mean cubic feet and not square feet (a 4000 square foot space with 8' ceilings would yield 32,000 cubic feet).

Filling 4000 ft^3 of space with a pair of 12's will prove to be a bit challenging so you may want to consider the 15's instead. The forum is littered with people who opted for only adequate on their first purchase, quickly realized they wanted more and ended up losing money by upgrading shortly afterward (a group I'm a member of). Oddly enough, the extra $500 you spend now could end up saving considerably more. But once, cry once. It's less expensive in the long run.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite...

Yes you are correct. I think I’ll just bite the bullet and get the 15’s. Too many people and things I have read have pushed me towards that option.

BTW, the FVX15 is on sale right now. A pair of FVX15s would be $2068 shipped and a pair of FVX12s would be $1658 shipped meaning $410 more for the pair of FVX15s.

Thank you Enrico. Just pulled the trigger and ordered the FVX15’s. Can’t wait to get these subs. How long does it normally take to get to Alabama ?

That's one of several methods I use to jockey around heavy subs. A moving blanket is fairly thick so it offers decent protection, they're a good size and with their heavy constructions are easily up to the task no matter how much the sub weighs.
