He didn't specify the sub. The leaves some wiggle room there.

Even if the sub is $300 that's $60 a pop, but relative to the FV-18? Must be some pretty nice shampoo they use...

What is the full price, after the early bird discount? Will there be a matte/plain black option?

Very clever way to hear different subs. Without any cost involve
I end up choosing the Aluminum ones, for the reasons explain in the quote below.

Is that a foam surround they using for the paper woofer?
The Aluminum driver has rubber surrounds, and the Paper one use a foam surround. Personally, I choose the Aluminum ones. Since I prefer having all my speakers and subs without a grill on. And our new cat, love to chew on anything made of foam but will not touch anything made of rubber. Also since I never listen near Reference level, with a volume level of around -13dB in a medium 1728^3 room with two FV18. I figure that I did not really need those few extra dB, from the Paper cone version.

That paper cone looks super cheap. The 18" driver in the PSA looks to be of way higher quality. Sorry but that's my opinion and I'm now second guessing my planned purchase of dual FV18 subs.

The PSA in my photo is the V1512, 15" driver. Based only on attractiveness, I might agree. However, it would be a shame to make a decision on the sub choice based solely on what it looks like in my photo. The reviews I've read on the sub are overwhelming positive, as is my initial impressions with it. Good luck.

Do foam surrounds rot quicker than rubber? And aren't rubber surrounds more durable?

Thanks for the picture. It really show the difference in sizes between an 15 and 18 driver, is much bigger in real life than one would think

In the past, foam surround suffer from foam ruts. While a rubber one take a lot longer to dry out, and some products can be apply to avoid this.
Now a day, the new foam material are not suppose to have any foam ruts. But could not find any definitive answer.

And since you said in a previous post, "The 18" driver in the PSA looks to be of way higher quality". While PSA also make very good subs, many of them also use foam surrounds.

Well I had a JL Audio sub in my old car and it's foam surround rotted away after 10 years. Of course it was in a hot car all the time though.

I think the JTR subs have foam surrounds? Not sure what the B&C have? I don’t think foam surrounds are a weakness.

At any rate, if your interested in a Rythmik I’d go for the AL cone. I have dual Rev1 FV18’s and they are superb.

I have subs with foam surrounds in my competition car from 2002 still in perfect shape...they are 1000 dollar drivers tho....think it just depends on who makes the product. they are eclipse/fujitsu ten subs made in japan I believe.

on a different note, interested in metal cone fv18...would it integrate well with the fv25hp and fv15hp? I ideally want another fv25hp but its 1 inch too tall to fit under my bar.

The foam we use on the SW1825 driver is not even close to the foam that was used 20 year ago. The foam on the SW1825 driver is a new composite material with about 40% rubber and 60% foam which will last more than the life of the subwoofer itself. The surround on the DS1820 driver is pure rubber and of course more stiff. The new fiberglass and carbon fiber drivers will use foam surround like the paper cone driver.

As some have said don’t buy a sub based on how the driver looks. You could always have the grill on. Some love the look of any sub some don’t. All comparisons and impressions though are done for how the sub sounds. Build quality yes but not just how the driver looks. Just my 2 cents.

Is the hum coming from the cone, or if you put your ear up to the cabinet is it the transformer in the amp humming?

The transformers in my Rythmiks and my Monolith amp would hum when certain lights and lamps are on in my house. The Emotiva CMX2 DC blocker fixed all of my problems. No idea what your voltages and power plugs are over there so this may not be a solution for you?

It’s because the power supplies on the amps are different. Rythmiks use torrodial transformers. You could probably trace down the hum from an appliance or light that is on is your house. It took me a while to find out my root cause and it was the lamps in my living room and my under cabinet lighting in my kitchen. Only hummed when they were on. Emotiva thing fixed it 100%.

[QUOTE=darthray;59247184]Very clever way to hear different subs. Without any cost involve
I end up choosing the Aluminum ones, for the reasons explain in the quote below.

I also personally like the Aluminum cone look better myself. But are you saying with two FV18's you can't hit reference in that room? I have a 4100 or a little bit less Cu Ft room is two FV18's not enough for my room?

Very clever way to hear different subs. Without any cost involve
I end up choosing the Aluminum ones, for the reasons explain in the quote below.

I also personally like the Aluminum cone look better myself. But are you saying with two FV18's you can't hit reference in that room? I have a 4100 or a little bit less Cu Ft room is two FV18's not enough for my room?
@Titan319 I have dual FV18’s rev1 in 10k cubic foot open floor plan and it feels/sounds like the house is coming down on heavy bass movies. If you are on a suspended floor I’d say it’s plenty of firepower.

They'll be plenty for your room. And from what I saw in Darth's post, he just says that he doesn't listen at reference so having those few extra dbs that the paper cones gives wasn't an issue for him (paraphrasing, of course. ).

Sound good i was going to say and man the room he has is huge so no worries here but i am on concrete with carpet. I did see some mention when choosing subwoofers to take in account your SPL levels of your speakers is there any merit to that?
