Is there one primary location for the listeners or will they be scattered about? What level of Audyssey (2EQ, XT, XT32)? They go from a no-frills version to one with all the bells and whistles. Depending upon which your receive has determines whether or not it's able to independently tune the subwoofers.
Thanks...its being built so wide choice! It will be in a theater room (18'x17'x9') with a 2 seating area in back center.
Another related Q is should I go with 10" or 12" sub? excess hum is something that I dont like, favor more of punchy beats.
I currently own an ancient Sony 12" sub that seems to be ok but nothing great.
The receiver has Audessey MultiEQ XT32, below is from the specs:
Equipped with the full Audyssey Platinum suite of advanced DSP algorithms, the AVR-X4300H features Audyssey MultEQ XT32 automatic room acoustic correction. With the supplied measurement microphone, MultEQ XT32 analyzes each speaker's output (including the subwoofers) at up to 8 measurement locations and generates precision digital filters that optimize each channel for the correct frequency and time domain response.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume smoothes out annoying jumps in volume (such as TV commercials), letting you listen at lower levels and still enjoy clear dialog, music and sound effects. Audyssey Dynamic EQ provides precision tonal tailoring for full range clarity at any listening level. Audyssey Low Frequency Containment uses advanced psychoacoustic algorithms to deliver a full range tonal balance, including deep bass, but without disturbing close-by neighbors or family members in other rooms, and features a multi-step adjustment that lets you dial in the amount of containment to your preference.

Audyssey Sub EQ HT provides individual DSP tailoring of each subwoofer in a dual subwoofer setup, for deeper bass with improved definition, compared to a single subwoofer configuration.

Sub EQ, muy bueno. That means if you have more than one subwoofer each of them gets its own EQ curve.

No bueno. Seats against a wall - especially the back wall - wreak havoc on the bass, Sub EQ or not. If possible, you should pull them out a few feet.

You're in for a treat; the subwoofers available today will be quite a bit better than that old Sony.

If you only have two seats, and they are close in proximity, there's a good argument for a single nice subwoofer instead of a pair of average subs. What are you after; depth, volume, precision, something else perhaps? Those are not mutually exclusive, but the more qualities you add the more the cost goes up.

BTW, did you really need to quote the entire post?

Yes, will be having the prime seating 3-4 feet from the rear wall. Allow me to tell you more on what I am looking for:

I recently got new speakers - Focal Aria 926. These have two 6" woofers and good bass.
https://www.focal.com/en/home-audio/...akers/aria-926

The next one up was Focal Aria 946 with dual 8" woofers but for $1500/- more so I decided to then invest in a good subwoofer.
Not really sure if a sub complements to fill that gap ..but that is what I am looking for. So I can go higher in budget.
To get deep bass that I am missing from dual 8". Smooth Jazz/instrumental is my primary listening preference.

Well, with that in mind... you're in the wrong thread I'm afraid. The last thing you want to do is saddle those Focal's with a budget subwoofer. That would drag the whole experience down. Your subwoofer(s) should compliment the speakers, not insult them. About the least costly sub I can think of that might work is the RSL SpeedWoofer 10S, which is $400.

Thanks a lot, JimWilson.
Yes, I need to look for something in line with Focals rather than a budget subwoofer. Great help, will keep researching in appropriate thread.
Appreciate very much all of your detailed and quick responses!

Fry's has the Klipsch sub-12hg on sale again for $197 with free shipping.

I know Klipsch doesn't get much love here but most of the disdain seems directed at the 10SW and 12SW.

I have seen some feedback on the Sub 12HG and it was positive so I thought I would ask for opinions . At $200 the sub is right in the middle of budget subs. Is the quality of construction and overall sound comparable to the BIC PL-200 or the polk505 ? There was another $200 sub that was popular as well but I forget the name.

The room is 20x20x8with half of one wall open to a second room. 50/50 music and movies. I know I will need 2 to fill that space. Hence the deal hunting

Thanks

Klipsch sub-12hg is $198 @fry s.com this week with promo code. That's the best bang for the buck going right now under $200.

Yesterday Fry's had a 1 day promo code with free shipping on it so I went ahead and ordered one. I think the weekly promo code is for instore only. The sales change constantly, a person really needs to keep watch.

I know it is a much older design but I am letting budget control my purchases (for once) and from what i have read, it should perform well for being a $198 sub. Once I get it and then once I get home and can set it up I will post my thoughts (as uninformed as they may be).

The Sunday code, which is good for the entire week, does indeed work for shipping the Klipsch sub-12 for $198. The sub-12 has long been a go to selection under 200 bones. It's been available many times for under $200 the past few years and I'm surprised they are still pumping these out, as it was supposedly discontinued quite a while back. Hope you enjoy it.

I'm not familiar with the Klipsch SSW12. Did you possibly mean the R12SW? The sub-12hg is from the cheaper "Synergy" line. The build quality isn't exactly high end. It's like back in the day, buying a muscle car for the engine, with it having roll up windows and no AC.

I think I meant the sw12. I went to frys today. the sub they use in the demo room is the sw10. I like it. pretty awesome for music at least how they have it set up there.

it's a punchy little sub, i heard one at best buy. However for the price ($250 on sale?) I feel like there are better choices. Mostly because for $180-$200 you can get a Bic RTR Ev-1200 or a Bic F12 (basically the same sub) or for less money you can get a dayton sub 1000, sub 1200, or a bic v1020.

I can't believe I missed out on the svs sub deal. I bought an svs sub back in 2007 and its still going strong.

I need another for my theater room. Im looking for two subs this time. So is bic the best behind svs?

What about wireless subs? Less wires the better. I really want this room looking clean.

What SVS deal are you referring to? If it's the PB12-NSD, it's still available from Electronics Expo, World Wide Stereo and Listen Up for $499.99.

I may just settle for a klipsch. I wanted two subs and needed to keep the budget under 500 for both combined

I have the HG 12 Klipsch . I am very happy with this subwoofer!!
I got it on CL for $125. I think this is a good sub for movies as it goes pretty deep with some volume.
I would say that it does not have a great punch in the midbass and it sure does not seem like the fastest most accurate bass. As I said before I think this is a pretty fantastic sub for movies for under $200!!

Thanks Jim. Now that's a REVIEW! You covered that sub from top to bottom. You answered questions I didn't even have. LOL. Thanks again.

You're quite welcome. I'm glad my evaluation proved useful.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite.

BTW, did you really need to quote the entire post?

Thanks for the heads up.

The Rockville APM10W seems to fit the bill so I'll add that one. Their RBG12S is a PA subwoofer though, which is a different market then what I'm tracking; this list is for products designed for HT and 2 channel music systems. The Kinyo has a 5.5" driver, which means it isn't really a subwoofer. I have established a minimum driver size of 8" because anything smaller is a mid-bass module more than anything else.

Not sure whether this is allowed here or not, but for those of you who have access to a Frys store in your area, they have a Klipsch Synergy Sub-12HG (apparently, a discontinued model) on sale through tomorrow, for $229.00 (plus shipping and tax) . . . this sub has a 12" driver and a 300w RMS/650w Dynamic amp . . . I live about 20 miles from the nearest store, and yesterday, I went online and ordered one, and got FREE SAME DAY DELIVERY!!

To me, that seemed like a SMOKIN' good deal on a sub that normally lists for around $400 and up online . . . I think you can even order it directly from their website and have regular delivery, but of course, shipping charges will apply . . .

EDIT: After I posted this, I did a search in this thread, and saw that Frys has had this sub on sale at times for about $30 less . . . still a good deal, IMVHO . . .
