I got my two S1801's this morning. I had talked to Tom on Friday and he said he was shipping them either on Friday or Monday. I didn't get a shipping confirmation(might have went to spam) so I assumed they weren't shipping until monday. I got a knock on the door while I was getting ready for work this morning and they were outside. What a pleasant surprise! Well, I was going to go to work.
I guess ill start with a little backstory. In the end of November/beginning of December I decided to get a home theater setup. After researching for awhile I decided on and Andrew Jones Pioneer 5.0 speaker set and a SVS PB-2000 sub. I do think the Pioneers are a good entry level speaker set for the money, but i knew right away that I wanted more. I also thought that the AJ speakers were the weak link in the system that needed to be upgraded first. I decided that instead of making several marginal upgrades and wasting money I wanted to go from the AJ Pioneers right to my end game. After sever weeks researching I decided to buy a full 5.0 set of MT-110's and MT-110SR's. Got the 110's around the beginning of January. I got them set up and was blown away by them in every way. But it was immediately apparent that my PB-2000 was a very weak link in the system now. I noticed it much more with music than movies. So about 1-2 days after I get the MT-110s I preorder two V1801's(which I later switched to S1801's) and the waiting game starts. And then today happpened!
Today I got the S1801's setup under the left and right MT-110's and got to listen to music for about 2 hours after I did the Audessey setup. Now for my first impressions and please take note that I am very new to home theater, I do not consider myself an audiophile. Hell, I don't even know what words to use most of the time so I will be speaking in layman's terms quite a bit
The first thing I noticed with the S1801's was how consistent the sound quality was. With the PB-2000 music was the subs weak point fore sure. Some songs the bass would sound just OK and some songs the bass would sound pretty bad. I really noticed it on the song from Mad Season - Wake up. On the bassline in the beginning some frequencies on the PB-2000 just didnt play well at all. Well the S1801's hit it and every other song out of the park. When I played Pantera - 13 Steps to Nowhere on the PB-2000 I thought the drum kick in the beginning was going to blow the driver out, on the S1801 its effortless and so much cleaner and less distorted. The whole systems is balanced now. It makes the MT-110's sound so much better as well. Every single song I play blows me away with how good it sounds. I dont know how to describe it, i know the bass is much louder than before, but it doesnt sound much louder because of how much cleaner it is. It just sounds......better. So anyone out there with PSA speakers that has a lower quality sub, do yourself a favor and upgrade, you are doing your self and your speakers a huge disservice and you don't know what you're missing.
Also I dont want to sound too harsh on the PB-2000. I know its in a completely different class than the S1801's. Also I havent watched any movies yet so im excited for that comparison. That was where the PB-2000 shined IMO.
