Yeah that's what I was thinking too. I was going to give this a run the other day on the new subs but BR 2049, It, Godzilla and Don't Breathe had already kicked my butt!

ya I hear! I liked BR2049 but I wouldn't say its one of my fav bass flicks just generally I thought there was a lot of slow parts in the movie and I still wish the bass was more frequent cause when it hit it HIT! I feel like I'm in the minority here but idk I might have to give it another spin. I would would watch mad max again (and several other bass flicks) any day over BR 2049. I mean I liked it just cant put it at the top of my list for go to bass films

Nice! My Dad and step mom are visiting me this Sunday. I can't wait to play the BR 2049 opening for them. I'll take it easy on them, maybe only -15!
Also, ordering up a umik from cross spectrum and a laptop this week finally.
Maybe a minidsp 2x4 as well!

edit- I ment the movie "It'' I played at -4 not BR just to clarify

Talking PSA Journey - Review part 01

Hi all

Today was an exciting day, I got the dual S3601s hooked up in my room, did some testing and comparison against the Paradigm Sub 2.

Experience in my room: Before I began testing, I level matched all three subs to 75db at my primary listening seat. I collaborated the Anti-mode and left the Subsonic-Filter on. I used the preexisting ARC equip activated that was taken with the sub 2 as the active sub.

All butt-kickers were off. The controls on the s3601 were as follows; Gain - Midpoint; Delay – 0, Crossover – bypass/150Hz, Room Size – Midpoint. Other equipment in the tests; Anthem AVM60 with sub level set to +4, Paradigm Persona fronts, crossed over at 80Hz.

I used Tidal HD streaming service for tested music tracts, and I used a few test scenes from the Ultimate Bass Demo Disc Volume 5 for movies. Tests I ran involved listening to the sub 2, listening to a single S3601, listening to dual S3601s. Listening distance was about 14 feet away at a volume of -15 on the processor

And Holy Shyyt! I do not even know how to properly put what was experienced into words, I'm still trying to wrap my head around wtf just happened. The sound coming out of the S3601 was so rich and enveloping. It is like having a nice glass of full-bodied wine. I felt a thump in my chest as if I was sat two inches away from the sub

All bass notes on the music tracts were beautifully reproduced with clarity, with an enveloping grunt all at the same time, the sound waves hitting me made all the hairs on my arms and head tingle as it slapped me in the face and chest.

That notion, that big drivers are slouches, is totally bogus in this case. Wow! There were no lingering, laziness, or standing waves all about the place. When a bass drum note was played, it was BAM, straight to the point, then it was gone, very responsive sub

On movies, OMG, I'm still hearing the bullets in my head from the “13 Hours The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi - Take out that Tactical!” scene on the demo disk. Notes were so precise and clean. And the earthquake like feeling when the bass got down low, it was as if my butt-kickers were on. It was unbelievable! The “The Martian – Deceleration” scene, when the door blew and the air was rushing out, it's as if I was there, in that ship, getting the air sucked out my lungs. Absolutely absurd performance!

One S3601 vs One Sub 2, this I must say was very surprising to me. Whiles I would give the sub 2 a slight edge on sharpness/tightness on reproducing some mid base notes, that single S3601 out performed it regardless. The quality of the sound was better overall. As far as the grunt goes, the sub 2 sounded hollow in comparison.

Two S3601 vs One Sub 2, well, this was more of a slaughter than a comparison, the sub 2 was simply and thoroughly demolished. It simply had no comparison to make at this point, apart from the sub 2 looks shiny.

Do not get me wrong, prior to PSA showing up at my house, in my mind, the sub 2 was the best thing next to slice bread, It’s a fantastic sub; however, as hard as it is to believe, after listening to the sub 2 for over 4 years, I must admit it was simply outclassed and outgunned by the S3601s. And to add insult to injury, the s3601s is less than half the price of a Sub 2.

I do not know why/how these PSA S3601s sound as good as they do, and has that unbelievable performance and headroom for the price this gear is going for, it’s sort of mind boggling, I was always one to consider inexpensive equipment as crap, but boy was I wrong. These S3601s are first class Hi-Fi. I had two other listeners come over to do some listening tests, just to make sure my mind was not playing tricks on me, they both arrived at the same conclusions as me.

Tom and Jim, a big thank you for making such an awesome product! I still don’t know wtf just happened, but all I know is I love it, I’m going to sell that sub 2 and contemplate getting another s3601, but I think that is just going to be way past absurd!

Talking PSA Journey - Review part 02

Now for part two, Dual s3601 vs dual SB16 Ultras.

I took the s3601s on a little road trip down to my brother’s house who also has dual SB16 Ultras for some more testing and a shootout against the SVS. This space is acoustically untreated and smaller in comparison to mines

All settings and equipment were similar to what was used in “PSA s3601 Testing – Part1”. Only different were the fronts, which were paradigm Signature series speakers.

As far as music listening goes, again there was a clear and distinct difference, the S3601s were simply more powerful, with its rich enveloping sound. In my opinion, it handled that upper bass way better as well with its clear precise reproduction. The SVS did not fare as badly as the Sub 2, but it still lagged behind.

As far as movies, man oh man, the gap widened significantly. We ran the same test scenes which were “13 Hours The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi - Take out that Tactical!” and “The Martian – Deceleration”. Whiles the SVS did not disappoint, it was simply outgunned.

We had to crank up the volume way higher when the SVS were hooked up to see if it would close the gap “-22 for PSA, -15 for SVS”, but it still was not enough, this eventually ended up landing us in trouble.

We accidentally forgot the volume was cranked up higher for the SVS, hooked up the S3601s, pressed play, which almost lead to us destroying the house and our eardrums along with it, I literally almost soiled my pants! However, I am grateful that the ringing in my ears eventually went away after 20 minutes or so 

We also did some listening without the Anti-Mode connected, and it seems that the Sub sounded even better “Maybe the anthem gave us all that we needed and the anti-mode were not required in this case?” The quality amp on the S3601 may also have a play here as well along with room characteristics. I'll run the test in my space without the Anti-Mode to see if I get similar results.

The S3601s are simple an impressive piece of hardware, and its price point coupled with its longer than usual warranty, its really doing my head in, its not computing! but it is what it is, we had another independent listener come over as well to give his opinions, everyone was thoroughly impressed

At the end of the testing, the results are my brother telling me to come back in a months’ time to collect my subs, whiles he tries to sell the SVS and buy a pair of S3601s.

Sweet write up! Thanks for that. Do you have any impressions to give running just a single S3601?

ARC does a good job. I’m using it to get a ported and sealed sub to work together, and it did well enough i also didn’t need thr antimode i had bought.

Hey fellas. I'm going to jump on board with REW and finally get some measurements of my room. However, I admit I'm a little confused as to what I should be getting. I see on amazon the UMIK-1 is a little over a $100. I have amazon gift cards so that's why I was thinking of getting it from there. I also see cross spectrum has mics as well.

My confusion is this 2x4 minidsp talk which I have no clue what that even does. Is this something I also need, and if so, what does it do? I thought just getting the UMIK-1 with REW is all I would need to take measurements of my room, so please correct me if I'm wrong here. Thanks guys!!

Speakers: Fronts- JBL 230, Center- JBL 235C, Surrounds: Fluance XLBP
Sub: PSA 15V
Processing: Onkyo 676

All you need is the UMIK and REW to take measurements. The minidsp is if you want to have hands on control over the EQ of your your subs.

So does REW actually adjust anything or just measure to place your sub properly?

I have a single v3601 and haven't ever messed with REW because it's always been a little intimidating. My sub is in about the only place it can be so I don't know if I'd benefit.

Ok thanks. And any difference purchasing the UMIK from Amazon vs Crossspectrum? I thought I read something about a calibration file that you can only get if you buy through cross specturm. Not sure what to do here...

The mics are the same no matter where you get them, they are from miniDSP from China.......the difference from purchasing from CSL is that Herb (owner) calibrates the mics with 0, 45 and 90 degree cal files, 90 is what you'll use most for the REW measurements. If you purchase from Amazon I believe it's the same as if you bought it from miniDSP, they have both the 0 and auto generated 90 degree cal files which is all you really need.

I have two mics, one from Herb (CSL) and another from Parts Express, I have tested both and I can honestly say there's not much difference between each of them for accuracy or precision measurements. The calibration file you're talking about is available at the miniDSP site, if you buy from CSL Herb includes them with all his mics. I believe CSL also has the sensitivity included now with their mics, before you still had to go to the miniDSP site to download it. Get the mic where ever you could get it quicker.

All of this is discussed with easy to follow instructions in the REW guide by @AustinJerry linked in my signature, this is a must follow guide if you want to get REW up and running, good luck

anyone know what exactly the added risks are of playing bass boosted music from youtube? I listen to so BB songs sometimes only cause I'm to the point where I'm hardly testing my t18s with anything else unless it it BBed. whats the difference in just cranking my subs up more on a regular track vs leaving them at the same level and listening to a BB song on youtube?

@butie120 Amazon is out of stock indefinitely, PE about 3 weeks till in stock, CSL about another week (price $115 shipped), Madisound, out of stock, miniDSP.com in stock ($95 shipped)........if you could wait I would go with CSL, a little more $ but worth it............peace of mind knowing Herb calibrates all of the UMIK-1s..
