A $70 Klipsch Sub10 from craigslist hooked up to a Samsung HTiB got me started...Then I added an SVS Sb2000 , yes ported and sealed had no idea lol...
Then a PC2000 , then another.
Then traded for dual PC12's
Then bought V1501's , sold the PC12's for a pretty good loss...
I say I had the V15's for 2-3 months , then traded for a pair of V1801's..Had those for maybe 6 months..
Originally put in order for 2 V36's , but felt that it wasnt necessarily more bass I was after but deeper extension...Plus by this time the GF had enough of me and had a legit freakout about the size of the V36's , which I agreed and changed my order to S36's..They gave me that weight and extension I was looking for...Bought an S3000i off someone at AVS to fit by my couch...Decided the S3000I was just a bit too small , bought another S36 and currently have the S3000i in the garage...I keep saying I am going to try stacking it on the corner S36 , but I get distracted...

I would say that all happened in about a year and a half or so....

You do what I do, I tell my wife about the great deals I got on my subs because I got them at pre-order pricing or in the outlet. I try to steer the focus AWAY from whether I NEED new subs. That's never a good place to end up.

Nope that wasn't me regarding the Browns.

Added a 15v couple months later don't have exact date
Added another 15v 7/12/17
Added another V1500 8/8/17

Traded all in on dual S3601's 1/4/18
which is still my current sub situation.
Contemplating trading towards dual S3612's when funds allow.

WOW... I'm hanging out with a bunch sub addicts. You guys need help.

My journey started with a Polk PSW202 which lasted a day and then I upgraded (if you can call it that) to a Polk PSW303.
Then a year or two later I moved to an Infinity Alpha 1200.
November 2013 moved to a PSA XV15
April 2014 added second XV15 which Tom upgrade for free to an XV15se.
July 2014 upgraded original XV15 to a XV15se (upgrade kit) to match the other XV15se.
August 2015 I traded in one XV15se and bought a V3600
September 2016 added a second V3600.
February 2017 traded in both V3600's for dual V3601's.
October 2017 added a S1801 for the living room.
February 2019 tried dual JTR2400ULF... sent back
March 2019 to June 2019 I was sub-less
June 2019 added dual TV36 iPals.

My upgrade path was simple, very 1st sub, Cambridge Soundworks P-1000 thought this was the bomb. Had it for a very long time, then it croaked.
Next PB-2000 had for 4 years,
And now my V1811.
My fixes last a little longer, lol.

The following is my Upgrade Path:

  1. An Onkyo SKW-200 sub from an Onkyo SKS-HT200 HTIB.

  2. Two Dayton Audio SUB-1200 subs that I use now for my PC, which is shared with a Logitech X-530 5.1 Speaker System that came with an old Sony VAIO computer.

  3. A PSA V1500 that I tried during the home trial period, which I ended up sending back for a PSA S3000i and many months later I bought a 2nd S3000i for which I am now very content with!

Content! That's what its all about.

In one word that's our goal. Once you're content you're done upgrading... And I'm happy to say I'm finally truly content as well.

Good catch. That sub was used nearfield for a while with the dual V3600's then moved up to the living room once I traded up to the dual V3601's. Then I sold that XV15se to a friend and used the money to help pay for the new S1801. I had always wanted to hear a PSA sealed sub so I replaced that XV15se with a S1801 and now I have sealed in my upstairs living room and ported in the HT.

My path to bass:

'92 My first stereo from pawn shop, Kenwood setup with 12" woofer towers

'95 My uncle gave me his old pair of Fisher towers with 15" woofers

'00 Roommate worked at BestBuy so I got some incredible deals on my speakers and because of the deal a Yamaha YST-SW90. I always had that nearfield behind the couch with my JBL S312s upfront.

Several years later, several rentals moves, then in storage a few years after I bought my house. Setup my room Dec '17 with upgraded receiver from 2000 to one capable of Atmos and DTSX. These new tracks really exposed the shortcomings of my sub.

Feb '18 got a PSA XS-30se from outlet. Oh my! Hunger ignited!

Aug '18 PSA V1500. got at a price off CL I figured I could eventually get my money back or very minimal loss. Waned to experiment with ported vs sealed. Tried mixing as well.

Feb '19 got two S3000i used in Cordovan Cherry. Those two with my XS-30se sounds excellent with lots of fun feel. I am very satisfied now. Of course I am curious about these newer bigger subs, but same way I am curious about driving a Ferrari.

My journey (UK based):

Started with a passive paradigm thing running off high level connections. Is that even a sub!?

Then made friends with an AV nut and had his hand-me-downs for many years which saved me a fortune. He would do all the research, by the best at a premium and then upgrade and I’d buy his old equipment at heavy discount. Four subs that went: Velodyne SPL1000, then dual SPL1000, then a DD10, and then on to a DD15. I stayed like that for many years but realised I was pushing the DD15 pretty hard so moved on to an S3000i which I loved so much I went straight out and bought an S3600 which is running VNF. The DD15 is now in the living room.

My current itch is to replace the 3600 with another 3000 or dual 15xx. Availability is my issue.

I wonder if there are signs to bass addicition? Like when they say kids that abuse animals are more likely to X....I remember in my early teens when I got my first cassette stereo and figured out how all the wires worked and how to connect speakers to eachother , I had a whole Franken-Radio! I had as many speakers , tweeters , and even 2 12" Earthquake subs in a sub-box all daisy-chained to a poor little 25 or so watt cassette radio .... I remember standing all around the room just to be in the bass sweet spot lol!!

I'm not nearly as bad as you guys. I can't remember my original subwoofer in the late 90s, I think it was an Infinity. Later I had a Velodyne HGS18. Then I had a pair of Sunfire True Subs for a long time, then was traveling living place to place and just used a M&K K-10 tinnnyy subwoofer I bought from their B-stock store. It was small and fit everywhere I lived for a while (I still have it in my closet). In '08 I bought a Bag End INFRA12" Pro subwoofer, I still use that today at my desk (I love the sound of those, but to do Bag End in my living room I'd need like 6-8 of them to match the output of a pair of 1811s...) When I bought my house, I repurposed some prosound subwoofers (Danley CS-30s in my home theater not caring for a while), they were okay but obviously didn't dig really deep they just got loud. Then I bought a pair of V1811s a few months ago. ;o) Hopefully this does me for a while.

Just starting my subwoofer journey after lurking here and saving for a few years and finally pre-ordered dual V1812s. I'm very excited, but also second guessing my decision; especially while I wait another month for these to ship. My question is...

Would I be better off buying a single TV3612 (for slightly less money than dual V1812s)? Adding another sub later on is unlikely to be an option; so it's my intention that this will be my first and last sub purchase for years to come.

I understand I might have fewer placement options due to its size and a more uneven frequency response without another sub to smooth things out. On the upside, it looks like I might hear/feel a lot more 10-20hz stuff for the content that has it. (side-note: I don't really want to buy a MiniDSP just for BEQ, so hopefully Plex will support BEQ transcoding some day)

For some background: our fledgling home theater (family room style) is used for movies and music in a 14'2"W x 13'L x 7.7'H (1,397 cu ft.) area of our basement, but is completely open on the right side to the rest of the house (worst-case ~15,000 cu ft. of air depending on open/closed room doors). There is a sub floor on the concrete with laminate, plywood, and a rubber underlayment for moisture. I'm using a Denon X3400H and stereo RBH SV-61R speakers with plans to add two surrounds and a center channel.

To achieve decent tactile feedback from ULF in my space on the cheap, I might consider building a couple BOSS mini-risers down the road. Perhaps the TR from a single TV3612 would be enough? I'm not sure with my space, but I just received a UMIK-1 today; so I'll start learning REW to get a better idea of the acoustics I'm dealing with and help me place the subs.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and expertise around here, I've already learned so much. Can't wait to hear what I've been missing!

Lets see.....my sub journey started around 2000-2001 with a used Velodyne F1500r.
Next was a HSU TN1225HO with the 250 watt amp. 2003?
DIY here I come! Adire Audio Shiva 12in in a 18inch sonotube approx 28 inches tall ported.
Adire Audio Tempest 15in in an EBS alignment. 2006? Added another about 1 year later. 2007? Moved from the EBS alignment to a sealed 6cuft per Tempest which to me was way more fun TR wise.
Next and last(?) are 2 PSA XS-30's around mid 2013.
However I am getting an itch lately!

As a side note I still have AND use the TN1225HO (minus amp) in my garage setup!
Forgot that I also built a Triska Sub from the Parts Express Project Gallery around 2014ish.

Just got my MTM210C! This thing is huge! I'm gonna need to buy a bigger house with a dedicated room and a projector! I'll post pictures later when I get home from the office.

Thanks again Tom!

I thought the same thing with the MTM 110’s. I can’t imagine the 210’s

My olds speakers were large JBL S310’s and they weight and size for a book shelf were far more impressive than the large JBL.

For what it is worth, I have a single TV36 ipal that just rocks my house. I too am on concrete (with carpet on top of it). My HT is in my living room and I also have a very open floor plan (only 3 1/2 walls in my living room). When I crank the MV up to around -17 (and running the sub around 8-10 db hot) I can feel the bass in my chest and my chair vibrates. TR is excellent with these subs and I feel no need for a BOSS system etc. (although I'm sure it would add some additional TR).

If you are looking for some ULF along with good TR my suggestion would be to go with the TV3612. Yes, you may have some nulls with a single sub. But you are already questioning yourself and it sounds like you desire some ULF. The TV3612 will deliver that for you. As many before me have stated, buy the single most powerful sub you can afford. There are a few of us with a single TV36 and are very happy with it. In fact, I believe @chucks0 traded in duals for a single TV36 and is quite happy with the outcome.

Yep. Great speakers but the 210's have my attention. I almost got a chance to listen to them at a GTG but the person bringing them had to cancel at the last minute.

The best investment you would make Mike. These speakers are just outstanding. Get them before they go up in price.

Would I be better off buying a single TV3612 (for slightly less money than dual V1812s)? Adding another sub later on is unlikely to be an option; so it's my intention that this will be my first and last sub purchase for years to come.
In my situation, I found the single TV36-iPal to be a better fit than dual V1811. Before making the move, I stacked my dual V1811s to get an idea of how the TV36 would fit physically as well as see what my frequency response would look like with a single large sub. Fortunately, I have a good location for a single sub that both works space wise and provides a pretty flat frequency response for the main listening position. Obviously, the dual V1811 was able to provide a better response for the secondary positions, but I don't sit in those seats.

But, what worked well for me, may not work for you. The biggest issue with a large sub is limited placement options. If none of the available options provide a good frequency response, multiple smaller subs might be the better choice. Do you have the ability to take some measurements to see if you can get an acceptable frequency response from a single sub location?

Since we're reminiscing, here's my first sub. A Jensen passive from a HTIB I got at a flea market in the early 90's. I still have it. Rock solid response down to 55hz!

Ray's right Mike, you really need to hear these 210's. I absolutely love these speakers and even though Tom has upgraded the tweeters he's keeping the price down for now. You should not wait to long to try these.

You know what I love about this thread? Only here will you find guys taking the time to list their subwoofer journey for others to see and read through... it's a blast to see where others have been and what they've experienced. You won't find that type of stuff taking place on many (if any) other thread. That's what makes this thread so much fun to hang out on.

That's a hard question to answer. I think Dave and Chucks gave you some good information and I would pay close attention to what they have to say since they have a single TV36.

What sub do you have now? Regardless, I would take that new umik-1 and take measurements all over your room and see if you can find a single spot where a sub delivers a decently smooth response. If you have that then IMO it's the TV3612 all the way. If not, then perhaps the dual V1812's would be best.
