The SB12-NSD is on sale now! It's the non-ported one.
Is that my best bet again for the price?
Or do I stick with ported?

Depends on what you want. The PB-1000 will have a little deeper extension down to 20hz, and likely more maximum output. The SB12 should have better SQ and is more compact in size. Here's a comprehensive review of the SB12 that could give you more insight: http://www.audioholics.com/subwoofer-reviews/sb12-nsd-subwoofer. Note that the reviewer is listening to the sub in a 4,000+ cubic ft. room.

Ok the super cheap ones are out. But I keep suffering from price creep!
This is only $100 more then that which is only $100 less then that which is ... Oops we are at $1k ok start over...
smile.gif

So capped at $600 or less,

SVS PB-1000 from 19hz 10" ported $500
HSU VTF-2 MK4 from 18hz 12" ported $600

Prices are shipped. Is the $100 worth the extra 1hz lower? Any others to look at?

Edit: and before anyone says "you should have got the SVS NSB on sale" remember I did order it they cancelled so I'm in this predicament. wink.gif

Your room is small enough that any of those three would have more than enough output.

If you want to stay with $500, get the PB-1000. If you want to spend $600, I say the Rythmik to give you a little better SQ.

Yeah, it appears right now that they have free shipping for that particular model (wouldn't surprise me if this is in lieu of the outgoing PB12-nsd being discounted right now). And there is a 10% discount when ordering 2 subs from the Ascend website, so that's a pretty sweet deal.

Only caveat is that you need 3-4" inches of clearance from the wall to accommodate the rear port, so that's something to consider in such a small room.

At $600 the HSU will have the most output and the variable tuning is nice, though I would expect you'd keep it in 18hz tune in your small room.

And it's not really just 1hz lower, it's likely more output and possibly less distortion at that frequency. Whether you can hear any difference in distortion is another matter, but out of those 3 subs the HSU has the most output below 20hz if that is important.

At $500 the PB1000 is the best you're going to do other than a DIY.

Like was said above, it isn't a matter of a single hertz, which you would have difficulty even distinguishing at such low frequencies, but how well those frequencies are handled. The VTF2 will likely handle deep frequencies with a lot more finesse than the PB1000. If it were me, it would be a choice between the Hsu VTF2 or the Rythmik LV12r, I don't think the PB1000 would compete on their level. I think the Reaction BPS 212 Turbo might be a contender at this level too, although not quite at the tuning points of the ported subs.

Aren't you in Canada? SVS becomes your only choice in Canada as the shipping to get Hsu and Rythmik to Canada can easily add $200+ to the cost.

Things have changed! My budget is the same, but update below...

I can ship to the US too I'm there weekly so it doesn't matter to me.

So the update...

I emailed SVS again, and the $769 one, that was being discontinued and on sale for $599, well, they found me another other one and will give it to me for $549 for my trouble! http://www.svsound.com/PB12-NSD#.UxEhVfldXTc

The HSU that is in the same price range is the vtf-2 mk4 $600 shipped http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-2mk4.html

Reading on AVS and other forums, since the PB12-NSD is actually more comparable to the more expensive $760 shipped Hsu vtf-3 mk4 http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-3mk4.html I think I will go with the SVS at the special price unless someone has a compelling reason not to. Or is the VTF-2 still better then the PB12-NSD?

so it boils down to:

vtf-2 $600 shipped
or
pb12-nsd $550 shipped

edit: I forgot about $600 LV12R ...

Hmmm...

You might just be at that point where's it's best just to pull the trigger, rather than driving yourself nuts with indecision. Not that I'm saying I haven't done that to myself (lol).

I just measured it and it's 107 across the bottom. I think that's about 123" diagonal.
