Official RBH Subwoofer Thread.

I-12 arrived this morning. Sub came double boxed, but no paperwork or anything like that in the box. Once the sub was out I also noticed there were no port plugs. Emailed Brian and apparently this isn't the first time the guys who box these up forgot the plugs. He replied he would send me out the plugs.

Sub itself looks very slick. The glossy red burl finish is a bit darker in person than what I had seen in pictures. Coupled with the aluminum driver, this sub looks really classy. Feet are big and chunky, which I like. They will give the sub a lift off of thicker carpet. Everything on the amp is laid out in standard fashion.

I-12 is very close in size to the SVS PB12-NSD. I have the isolation feet installed on the PB12, which raises it quite a bit compared to the little nub feet that come standard. The I-12 is still a little taller, but the PB12 is a little deeper. I-12 cabinet is curved, so the middle section is wider and wider than the PB12.

I haven't done much with the I-12 yet. I have been listening to music and letting the driver loosen up a bit before bum rushing it with movie LFE. So far, at least with music, the sub sounds very tight and defined. Steely Dan, Jurassic Five, Wayman Tisdale and George Strait are some of what I have been running through it so far.

Here are some pics. Due to the reflective finish of the I-12 and camera flash, some pics may look like the I-12 finish may have some flaws, but that's not the case. There is a couple of very small bumps in the finish, but it's very minor. Fit and finish is very nice.

I have to imagine the 1 year warranty on the amplifier detours a lot of folks from purchasing their subs. Maybe not the lower tier subs in their line-up, but definitely their flagship subwoofer which carries a price tag north of $5000.

Oh I understand and agree. 2 years on the amp should be a minimum.

Nice looking sub. I imagine these would sell like hot cakes if they bumped the warranty up.

I like how warranties on subwoofers specifically are so critical to some people. On most other items warranties aren't even paid attention to. A one year warranty is not unusual for electronics items, but for some reason it only makes a difference on subs?

Bull****...1 year warranty is not the norm for mid- higher end electronics.

Besides your basic display, computer or phone what respected av equipment maker ex RBH doesn't offer more than a year. My Denon has 3, my amps have 5 and my speakers 5. Nearly all the ID subs offer 5 on the amp ex HSU and Rythmik at 2/3. Dr. H does sell and extended. You even have companies like Oppo repair 83s that are well out of warranty for free.

My answer wasn't as concise as Basshead's, but as much as I agree with a lot of your posts Shady, ex PSA, your wrong on this one. I stay far away from anyone trying to sell mr av gear with a one year warranty ex a refurb. If they don't have the confidence to match the competition I don't have the confidence to do business with them.

After a little time with the I-12 I must say it's a darn good sub for under 5 bills. Been running it head to head against the SVS PB12-NSD and it very close in both output and extension. I would give the PB12 the edge in both categories, but by a very slight margin. This is with all ports open on the I-12, which I prefer. I didn't care at all for the I-12 with all 3 ports plugged. Most of the time the I-12 is within 1dB of the PB12. It's pretty impressive when you consider the PB12 was a $769 sub when it sold new.

I've now split them up and am running them together in my game room. They play very nice together and I'm getting a 5dB gain from my couch running dual subs over just one. The I-12 is very musical and smooth sounding. It's also, by far, the best looking $500 sub I've seen. It's definitely a very strong contender in the 500 price range . I didn't pay that much, which makes it that much better. Now if RBH would just extend that amp warranty out longer it would sure help.

Edit: The rubber feet on the I-12 should be fine for carpet or hard floors.

- most electronics costing $500 have multi year warranties
- Sub amps are known to fail, more than one company has folded because of this, amp reliability is a major factor in subs

Right now, I'm looking at the L12 with 3 year amp warranty, LV12R with 2 year amp warranty, and this RBH/EMP with 1 year amp warranty. Turns out my 1152 cubic foot room and moderate listening levels make me an ideal candidate for sealed subs, and having more placement options in my small, crowded room is just icing on the cake. A little deeper and a little cleaner bass is possible vs. the ported equivalents.

Turns out that all my procrasturbating (look it up) about getting a good sub for under $300 has pushed me past the conversations about the NXG, Klipsch and Bics and tumbling down the slippery slope to a $500 SVS, HTD or Rhythmik - then I saw this looker - the I-12. It is kinda huge, but the slick finish turns it into a nice piece of furniture. So now I am deciding between an HTD L2 or L3 or this RBH I-12.

A lot of dudes wanna get their grunt on if someone suggests that the finish of a sub matters, but in a living room rather than a dark dedicated home theater, something other than a big black box might be appreciated by more than just a wife. So screw that WAF excuse nonsense, how about MyAF; I ain't hidin behind my wife, hell, I have nice stuff other than a set of speakers, so why shouldn't the speakers look as good as they sound (or cost). Yeah, yeah, in the context of $1,000+ subs being the actually good ones, none of what I say makes much sense, but the reality is that any $500 ID sub is gonna be leaps and bounds better than anything my neighbors have, so to me, it should look better than some DIY that I built and spray painted in my garage. hmm spun out of control a bit.

Anyhoo, leaning toward this RBH I-12 and looking forward to hearing more feedback from the community (new place being built, my purchase is about 2 mos away so I can hear it in the new place while the 30 day in home trial is active...and no I probably won't end up shopping for dual 15"s by then...it is a townhouse).

I've had my I-12 for about 2 weeks now. Used it last night with Edge of Tomorrow as a new bass benchmarking test, and oh boy did the sub deliver. Worth every penny I spent.

If I understand correctly, the Amp in the Impression I12 is identical to the one used in one of the RBH line, higher end subs. There have not been specific complaints about that Amp not lasting the normal life expectancy for a AMP. As pointed out, for another 29.95, you can extend the amp warranty for another year and get 10 yrs on the driver...

Set up #1: EMP e5Ti, e5Ci, and EMP e5Bi surrounds, Outlaw LFM1 Plus sub, SVS NSD SB12 sub, Marantz Slimeline 1504 AV receiver
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and EMPtek10i10i sub, Denon 1910 AV receiver

The DSA-350 is the same amp used in the RBH SX-12. It's a high quality amp and I've never found any complaints on it. As for the warranty, I don't believe RBH offers an extended warranty on the I-12 or I-12/e.

I have had the I-12 now for almost 30 days. After watching several movies with a lot of deep bass, the amp stays cool. I was concerned about the warranty but if there was any issues we would be hearing complaints from SX-12 owners. I believe this subwoofer has high quality amp and driver. This sub really delivers smooth sounding bass for movies and music. Plus it is one of the best looking subs on the market.

As I recall from researching EMP Tek speakers a few months ago: previously, EMP Tek tended to have holiday sales frequently, but now RBH has more control over EMP Tek, and such sales have lessened.

This thread seems pretty dead?

I'm interested in buying an I-12 or 2 (probably b stock e versions) and I'm wondering if I can find out how it's going with yours?

Do you still own them? How are they doing / sounding?

If you could do it again, would you still buy the sub? Would you buy something different?

Thanks for your time and opinion.

Still have mine and actually now have three. Run them in my 2700 ft^3 room. Most of the time I run just two, but when I watch intense action movies I will kick on the third one. Kinda like hitting the NOS for that extra boost.

Good to hear!

Oh cool. When I was at RBH HQ picking up my speakers we talked about this sub, but they didn't have one I could hear. I looked at the monster sized box with nothing in it, but that was it. I told them I was waiting on audioholics review -- seems they may have made a call.

Do you still own them? How are they doing / sounding?

If you could do it again, would you still buy the sub? Would you buy something different?

Thanks for your time and opinion.
I took in another RBH orphan today. Waffled quite a bit on getting something bigger than I really needed. This now makes 4 RBH subs I've adopted

What do you do with all these subs? Don't you have 3-4 SVS subs as well?
