The Little Lady Wants Me To Bring On the Bass

I put together a 5:1 surround system for my girlfriend of many years piece-by-piece over the last year in her home as money became available. The last piece of the puzzle is the subwoofer. The system (so far) consists of a Yamaha RX-V577 7.2-channel Wi-Fi receiver, two Chane A3RX-C front speakers, two Chane A1RX-C rear speakers, and a Chane A2RX-C center. The system is located in the living room that gives way to a kitchen area and dining nook (no walls really to speak of except for a kitchen island separating the kitchen from the living room.) Dimensions are 24' length, 18' width, and 7'5" height. Looking for something around the $700 price range. As a reference, I have an Outlaw LFM-Plus doing bass duty on my 7:1 surround at home that she enjoys. It's been awhile since I bothered to look at any subwoofers and realize there are some new models out there. Any suggestions?

If you can squeeze more out of your budget, i'd recommend this:

http://jtrspeakers.com/home-audio/captivator-118ht/

Now it will be very powerful, especially if you don't have any walls. So i'd say if this is way overkill for your setup, look at SVS next.

JTR Speakers, RSL Atmos, Kaleidescape, Lumagen Radiance Pro, Marantz Processor, Emotiva Amps, JVC RS540

HSU VTF3-MK5, is the best bang for the buck sub (in your price range), given you will need output in that large area.

The room dimensions put it at around 3200 ft^3, which is on the lower end of what is considered a large room. $700 is kind of a "no-man's land" price wise. Not many options in that slot. The HSU VTF3-MK5 HP that was mentioned by "the foot" RayGuy is a very capable sub. Problem is it's quite a bit over your budget target, priced at $888, shipped. You actually just missed the boat on some good deals SVS had in their outlet for Memorial Weekend. They had some PB-2000 and PC-2000 subs for $650. PSA also just had the 15V on sale for $900.

If you can wait a month until 4th of July, there will be some more sales. If in that time you or your gf can accumulate some more money to throw at a sub, I would go with the PSA 15V if it hit $900 again. If $700 is about the limit, SVS will likely have the PB/PC-2000 on sale again in a month.

Get in touch with Mark Seaton and see if or when he has more MFW Turbos available to ship. At under 1000 delivered this is nearly an unbeatable value. If you can stretch to the 118HT than that is the way to go.

I agree with Mix_Master_Ice, $700 is kind of a no-man’s land as far as subwoofers. Since she likes your Outlaw, I think it makes sense to consider the Outlaw Ultra-X12 at $659 (check on shipping).

Music area: Magnepan 3.6, McIntosh MC2205 amp & C48 preamp, SVS SB13-Ultra, Oppo BDP 95, dbx 3BX, and assorted equipment.
Movie area: EMP Tek E5Bi (were rebadged to R5Bi), RBH/EMP Tek R55Ti, PSA S3000i, Denon X2000, Oppo BDP 83.

Outlaw Ultra X12 is $704 shipped for most, so that would certainly be in the budget range. It has been on sale not too long ago for $550, shipped. At that price it's a good buy. I think they recently increased the price, so it may not go that low again. I also used to have the Outlaw LFM-1 Plus and it was a good sub. The problem with the Outlaw subs is to get the deep extension you have to run them in 1 port mode, which can introduce some port noise and distortion. A single 3" port is just not really enough for the sub when pushed hard, making it a bit under-ported by design.

One other option, very similar to the Outlaw, is the HSU VTF-2 MK4. Performance and design wise, both subs are quite a bit alike. No surprise, since Outlaw subs originally were HSU design. The VTF-2 is currently still on Memorial Day sale price of $519/$586, shipped.

I still think I would wait for the July 4th holiday and see what sales arise. Personally, I would rather have a PB/PC-2000 at $650-$700 over either the HSU VTF-2 or Outlaw Ultra X12. The SVS would have a full 5 year warranty and their customer service is excellent, not to mention the other perks they offer.

Thank you for some of your pointers so far. Although I'm still open to suggestions, it seems logical to wait for the July 4th sales. Although I mentioned I was looking for something around $700, by no means does that mean I'm limited to that amount. I could go over somewhat.

Well if you can go up to $900 now, you could contact Tom V through the chat window at powersoundaudio.com. He may very well honor the $899.99 sale price that just expired on the 15V. PSA and Tom are great to deal with. Mention that you were referred from avsforum.com.

+2 Definitely call Tom, as I am sure he would offer great advice, price, and maybe even have something up his sleeve.

Send a message via AIM to fassbass
It appears that SVS has extended their sale on outlet subs so they are still something to look at.

I'd like to thank everyone who weighed in on their thoughts concerning my question. I've poured over each suggestion and doing my own research, decided to go with the PSA 15V. I contacted Tom and we got along famously (since we're both Ohio boys.) He would have given me the $900 price except the order is west of the Rockies. I still got it for $925 which is more than fine in my book. Again, thank you very much for helping make the girlfriend happy. By the way DBruce 13, we've both been married and as any divorced person can tell you, we're happy with the status quo.

Congratulations.

I'm sure it will exceed your expectations as a first "real" sub usually does.
