Haha point taken. Sorry my HT lives far away where it has room to breath so couldn't check this.

May also find Battle LA; alien invasion/ marines deployment scene, blowing up of service station later on.
Battleship; first discovery during the games (early on)
Braveheart; avenging murder of his wife (fairly early in)

Smile Progress!

In my travels through the subwoofer song of the day thread (https://www.avsforum.com/forum/113-su...ation-day.html), I noticed some beautiful frequency graphs that looked just like what I wanted for my mid-bass search. Somehow, I figured out that they were produced by Audacity (http://www.audacityteam.org/download/).

Using a loopback, it is possible to "measure" the source directly, so, even if your system is plugged into a Bose clock radio, you can get full-frequency analysis. Very cool (though a little tricky to figure out).

This is the train crash scene from Inception:

Compare that to Decaf's White Clouds bass intro:

I still have a good bit to figure out, but I think this gets us heading in the right direction. Obviously, the low bass in Decaf has a very different chart than the scene from Inception.

I recommend anyone with too much time on their hands to give this a try.

Michael

Learning how to use Audacity.
Line out to line in much easier. Also need to copy and paste a small section of an audio track to analyze it as a spectrum.
All in all, I think I'm making progress.

I think we're clear on deep bass (ULF).

The insane intro to Edge of Tomorrow:

The mushrooms in Amazing Life:

Then you have stuff that's just loud everywhere, like the liftoff from Interstellar:

I think we're getting closer to "mid-bass" with the bomb in the book in Book of Eli:

The train crash in Inception:

or the shootout in the taxi later in the same scene:

So I think I can finally demonstrate a "mid-bass curve," which, as expected from the clip suggestions, has most of its emphasis in a wide range around 100Hz. The trick is finding samples of that that do not also have a lot of low bass.

Heading in the right direction?

Michael

Nice job on audacity.

Here's the thing though: There's a difference between midbass frequencies vs what we feel. While your audacity analysis may show trends in clips that we claim as midbass, it's most likely that we are identifying those clips not by a broad range of frequencies, but those frequencies that produce tactile response from our bodies:

In the case above, 50-100hz seems to be the sweet spot for the chest cavity or what some refer to as "the kick in the chest" or "heart racing".

So that would make for a good mid-bass demo disc, no?
I guess I could use VibSensor for everything, but then I think we'd just open up a very large can of worms.

It would!

Imo, id focus on 50-100Hz...IME that's the sweet spot.

What's interesting though is that the best midbass is actually full range but with a peak in the mid bass sweet spot.

@LastButNotLeast ,

Nice scientific write up on the mid bass curve. I'll use some of the graphs for menu backgrunds

Glad to see the train crash from inception. I thought about it more after your PM and I think Blue Man Group has quite a bit. Been a while since I've spun that disc but Ill give it another whirl and let you know. My kids love watching it so maybe tonight. Theres a couple of clips in it that I know are crammed full of drum sounds loaded with 60-200hz and quite fun to listen to.

For those with the capability of adding filters, these two do a great job eliminating the mid-bass frequencies we've been discussing.
PEQ 90 Hz -8.0dB Q=6.0
PEQ 110 Hz -8.0dB Q=6.0
For such a small frequency range, the effect is dramatic.

I wonder also in the first scenes here where the dream is collapsing.
Some of the car explosion parts are pretty mid-bass-y.

- Terminator Genisys; T800 enters 1984 and fights Arnie. The shotgun (at reference) packs a lot of mid-bass and no real LFE.

Why no music here? The song "Lateralus" by Tool has some good drums and bass guitar chest thump. Getting heavier, "Redneck" by Lamb of God is full of power. If you can handle really heavy metal "Deathmask Divine" by The Black Dahlia Murder is 3 1/2 minutes of chest thumping glory.

Hitman Agent 47.

The fight scene around the 47 minute mark of the movie has some serious chest kick at reference.

Compare and contrast

Didn't you always love those assignments in school?

From the wonderful Dolby Amazing Life clip, this is the "thump" of the mushrooms:

Compare that with the "blare" of the horns:

The scene from The Book of Eli at the farmhouse has two great examples.
When the book/bomb blows up:

and when the bazooka blows up the farmhouse:

so that scene's in.

The depth charges in U-571 are deep bass. Sorry, I kind of like that scene, too.

I think we're heading in the right direction.

All of those songs have chest pounding mid bass not deep bass at all, probably centered around 50-60hz. But no concert footage that I am aware of.

I use a loopback to record the clip (line out to line in on the AVR), then change line out back to AVR, play the clip back in Audacity, find the brief section I want, copy and paste it to a new file, then generate the spectrum. Tedious, but you get the hang of it after a while.

Thank you. Unfortunately, I'm finding that a lot of these terrific mid-bass scenes are gunfights.
Book of Eli is my standard for now, but if everyone's already tired of it, I can look at including others, including Kickass (which gets extra points for a great title).
