Did you share details about your goals, room and what subs you are coming from? It would interesting to see what he says. In my many interactions with him, he has never tried to sell me something that would not work for me.

I believe the conversation went something like this:

Jeff: Order placed for multiple Captivator 4000ULFs...

Haha, I don't think Jeff is that impulsive. Only reason I bring that up is firstly it can't hurt to let the person who designs the product know what your goals are and what you have tried, and second I am aware of one instance where Jeff talked some one down from a cap 4000 due to their room. He of course wants his subs to sound the best in any instance...

Haha... Of course Jeff is not like that...

I have to say Jeff is very concise in his emails and phone calls because he just doesn't have the time to chit chat... Personally I feel he lets his products provide the warmth, pun intended.

Yep even with the gazillion speakers of Atmos and DTS:X, the subwoofer and LCR speakers remain the most important channels to get right. You definitely want to go big for these 4.
Congrats.

How does the 2400ULF sound with Netflix? I know the audio is compressed but the bass is pretty low on Netflix (using Nvidia Shied).

I am watching Punisher s2 right now and the bass is anything but low through my xbox one, OR my panasonic player. Perhaps you have a setting off or something. Honestly, most of the action shows I watch on netflix are pretty well done, much better than most broadcast series on regular cable.

True, but I'm a few episodes in and the gun shots are good but not GREAT like they were in season 1 on the episode shot out in the forest. That was shocking how good the bass was for streaming.

I heard some pretty decent bass while watching "Jack Ryan" on the newish Amazon 4k Fire Stick. Not mind-blowing, but deep bass on the 2400 ULF is articulated so nicely. Really nice texture. I even enjoy something as mundane as the rumblings of large trucks with these subs. I always thought my SVS subs were good, and they were, but you tend not to know what you don't know until you do know. And that's the case here.

Just placed an order for a 4000ULF-lp. Room is 5400 cubic feet (30x20x9) with TV centered on 30’ wall. I plan to place the sub in the rear left corner with the drivers pointed to the right towards the MLP.

I suspect the 4000ULF will be a bit of a monstrosity sitting in the room, so I hope the bass is worth it! Other system details:

Denon AVR-x4400h
Chane A2.4 L/C/R
Chane A1.4 rear surrounds
RSL C34E ceiling speakers (5.1.4 setup)
Concrete floor under thin carpet, 3 concrete / brick walls

Feel free to tell me I’m crazy and should have done something doffeeenrly.

Anyone have the issue where turning on your sub for the first time there’s practically no sound coming out? I checked all my rca connections and even turned the gain all the way up but no sound?

Is this just simply a case of letting my Captivator S1 break in?

Have you tried connecting the Subwoofer cable of your working S1 to the new S1?

Yes, I tried both a rca cable and xlr cable from the working S1 but the sound is so low as to be practically inaudible on the new one. The green “on” light and there’s even the faint hum of the amp being on, but no bass

I have a 2400ULF and need to go dual but while I am waiting to get some finances going can I setup a near field Klipsch subwoofer that I have. I heave heard Denon calibrates the sub based on the lower quality sub and that might limit my 2400ULF. Is there a way to surpass this or alternative way to calibrate them separately so that the Klipsch sub does not limit the 2400ULF?

I wonder if its a bad amp? I'm assuming Jeff test all his subs prior to shipping? Its possible could be loose speaker wire between driver and amp? I had same issue on my svs subs where I had power light on but made clicking sound and it was just bad amp. SVS sent me replacement amp. Maybe once you try everything look and see if speaker wires are loose or anything. Its much easier to have Jeff send out replacement amp instead of having to ship whole sub back.

But since you have another S1 already....if I were you I'd remove the new plate amp and if everything looks connected then I would switch it to older S1 sub. If it works, then its not the amp and its the driver. If the new amp doesn't work with old S1 then its the amp and just have Jeff send you replacement amp and send old one back with return label.

Hi,

There is no harm in trying what you are suggesting, but I have no idea how it will sound. The tuning points of the two subs may be so far apart that you won't get cancellation at, and below, the tuning point of the Klipsch. If you do get cancellation, starting in the mid-20's or wherever, there won't be much that Audyssey can do to help you with that.

Audyssey won't hold back the stronger sub to match a weaker one. Audyssey will just stop EQing at all, where the weaker sub is down in SPL by 3db. So, it will measure the combined SPL of the Cap 2400ULF and the Klipsch sub, and wherever the Klipsch sub starts to roll-off, Audyssey will stop setting any filters. It does that to protect the weaker sub from being inadvertently over-boosted by control points which would have been fine for the stronger sub.

My guess is that you won't like the result of the experiment very much, because I think it is likely to result in less bass, and less clarity, below about 25Hz or so. But, who knows until you try?

Regards,
Mike

Jeff's reply would be similar to what ereed suggested. Since you have 2 S1s, it is much easier to troubleshoot and pinpoint the problem.

I have a phenomena where when adjusting the level via the test tones on my Marantz 8805 the sub is *very* faint. I have to turn the dial all the way up to hear anything.

But, when I run Audyssey and I get to the part to set the sub dp to 75db (and in real world use) everything is fine.

I did notice that the signal is summed if I use both RCA and XLR at the same time

How long did you wait after delivery before powering it on? Check out the Rythmik thread, there is a discussion there about the need to let the sub gradually acclimate indoors after being shipped in sub freezing temps. The amp can fail on initial power up due to condensation. Could be what happened to you???

I suspect the 4000ULF will be a bit of a monstrosity sitting in the room, so I hope the bass is worth it! Other system details:

Denon AVR-x4400h
Chane A2.4 L/C/R
Chane A1.4 rear surrounds
RSL C34E ceiling speakers (5.1.4 setup)
Concrete floor under thin carpet, 3 concrete / brick walls

Feel free to tell me I’m crazy and should have done something doffeeenrly.
One should be enough until you can add the second one. You know, for a better frequency response.

I did notice that the signal is summed if I use both RCA and XLR at the same time
Hi,

That's actually normal behavior for your Marantz. I have forgotten the precise difference between the subwoofer test tones used during the calibration process, and the pink noise used to adjust subwoofer levels in the Speaker menu, but they are different in both bandwidth and in perceived loudness. The important thing, as you noted, is that increases in the trim level translate to real world increases in the volume that the sub plays.

Mike

I powered on my S1 several hours after receiving it. I live in NC, where the temp didn’t drop beneath 60 degrees that particular day it arrived.

Silly to ask this of someone who already has a functioning S1, but is the crossover set to out, or whatever it's called?

I don’t think it’s a silly question. I always set the crossovers on my subs to out, or maximum. Then I can set all the crossovers in my preamplifier.
