Not to affect your impressions (but I'll go ahead and do it anyway ), I like how the 118HT sounds for music and prefer the 1400 for movies. The more important variable for both though will be room/seating placement/EQ/getting timing dialed in/etc.

I really like this! I think more companies should design smaller low tuned ported subs. My only qualm is the price. Why can't this be under 2k? 1800ish...

This is basically the same as the 18 below the spider. 15" basket, cone, surround are the differences, as far as I know.

Agreed. A $1800 price would make this new sub INSANE value and make it even more enticing than it already is! I love seeing new JTR products being introduced over the horizon.

I think there would have to be very close to zero/no profit in these for poor ol'Jeff if he offered them for $1800 (other than perhaps short term sale) . I mean it would be great for consumers, but the poor guys gotta eat lol
The Speaker-power 2400w amp ($1000+) & the 15" version of the Cap driver would have to be close to $500/unit, would eat up a lot of his wiggle room

Agreed! This would work as a end table in my room. I wonder if a ICE amp could drive it and lower the price a little?

Since the 1400W ICE Power amp plate is square shaped vs Torpedo amp's rectangular shaped, I don't think it would fit at the back...

Oh I thought the 2400XS was a complete different cab design from the regular 2400 so didn't think it would matter much to cut the hole to fit a ICE amp. That 1920watt unit might burst a little higher for the number junkies.

There has been a small low tuned sub option for less than $1500 for years, just not a JTR and a 10hz one.

Anyone in the JTR sub thread here have any insight on an active vs. passive decision? I want a Cap 212 for my garage, but can't decide if an additional $700 for the built-in amp is worth it for my application. It's a modest 100-watt/ch ch. system with bookshelf speakers - just lacking proper mid-bass music punch - no HT, ULF or high volume requirement. I'm leaning towards running a Dayton SA-1000 paired with a passive cap-212, just wondering how that might compare with the JTR-tuned amp in my application.

System: Multiple
Brands: Too many to mention
Great Sound: Everywhere, all the time!

I don't think many here in this thread have looked at JTR's Pro Audio products.

JTR offers the passive version on Pro Audio because most customers (DJs, sound engineers) already have some kind of amplification. In your case, you would still need to get a Dayton SA-1000 ($419 shipped from PE). The amp in an active Cap 212 Pro is the 1200W SpeakerPower amp. The SpeakerPower amp is vastly superior to the Dayton SA-1000.

Now, if you are looking at the Cap 212 (passive @ $1,299 + shipping and active @ $1,899 + shipping), you should also consider the Cap 118HT on sale @ $1500 shipped, making the sub $1349 alone. The Cap 118HT has a pro style driver with accordion cloth surround and is tuned to 18Hz, much lower than the Cap 212's 39Hz. This means, as an added bonus, you can use the Cap 118HT in your HT. I would ask Jeff if he could install a metal mesh (for a slight upcharge) in place of the cloth mesh on the grill.

I believe some have said that for music, they prefer the Cap 118HT than the Cap 1400. The current Cap 118HT has more output above 60Hz than the 2015 Cap 1400.

I hope this helps!

Speakers: L/C/R: JTR Noesis 212HT. Surrounds: Jamo C103, KEF Q100, Polk Audio RTiA3.
Subwoofer: JTR Captivator 4000ULF.
AVR: Denon AVR-X4400H. TV: Samsung UN75NU8000FXZA.

Thanks Chucky - that 118 does look like a good deal. But I'm set on the 212, just due to size/weight concerns. And I still doubt my application would benefit from an additional $300 worth of amplifier in my low-to-moderate performance and use-time scenario. Anyone here presently using a Cap212 passive?

The Cap 212 is 16" x 30" x 22.5" (HxWxD) and the Cap 118HT is 30" x 20" x 22.5" (HxWxD). So if you put the Cap 212 on its side, it is 4" narrower than the Cap 118HT.

Total cost comparison:

A: Passive Cap 212 ($1,299 + ~$100 shipping) + Dayton SA-1000 ($419 shipped) = $1,818. Power: 1000W Dayton amp.

B: Cap 118HT ($1,349 + $151 shipping) = $1,500. Power: 1200W SpeakerPower amp.

Speakers: L/C/R: JTR Noesis 212HT. Surrounds: Jamo C103, KEF Q100, Polk Audio RTiA3.
Subwoofer: JTR Captivator 4000ULF.
AVR: Denon AVR-X4400H. TV: Samsung UN75NU8000FXZA.

"No high volume requirement" does not agree with "music punch".

At the risk of sounding total Capt Obvious, that’s a pretty impressive chart.

Just saw this on JTR's FB:

"We have a pair of demo 2015 Captivator 1400 subwoofers. $1400 each O.B.O."

I asked Jeff about these. He said that these are in great shape.

This is a great opportunity for those with a 2015 Cap 1400 to go dual.

Right. Or for those who don't have any Cap 1400s to go dual Cap 1400s.

It's times like these when you wish you didn't already have a thorough bass solution established.

Yup!

I ran compression sweeps with my 2015 Cap 1400 almost 2 years ago. It produced 110dB @ 13Hz with almost no compression.
