Follow up post on Aquaman. Finally gave it another spin today, this time making some adjustments on my AllDSP to tame imo the overbearing 30Hz throughout and bump up the ULF frequencies,,, resulting in a more balanced bass presentation of which i enjoyed more than the first go.

Jeez, at the 1:50:25 timestamp there was some serious ULF bending all the windows in my house and up to that point seemed to me to be the lowest frequencies with good SPL. I would guess mid to low teens and maybe some single digit layered in, but just a guestimate. All in all,,,, a heck of a bass fest!!

Got The LEGO Movie Pt. 2. last night and had a lot of fun watching it! Great bass and all around great mix. Its probably my least favorite of the LEGO movies but still I loved it. Gunna watch it a gain tonight. My 3D copy of Aquaman showed up so I may check out the 3D on that tonight too.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) UHD Bass Graph

❌Upscaled 4K
❌Worst extension and volume than BD

Check out the BD graph below to compare for yourself.
They did everything wrong with this release which should of been an absolute reference
UHD like Black Hawk Down's native 4K remastered UHD.

Geez! I was eyeballing that UHD re-release pretty hard, but never actually hit the "Buy" button. Now I'm very glad I didn't! Thanks, MrGrey

I saw a cheap BD copy of Hellboy II but I skipped it because I thought I'd rather wait for the UHD. Going back for the cheap BD. That crap is unbelievable.

Edit: thank God for this forum and MrGrey's work. It's a shame that unsuspecting buyers will fall for this crap.

Is there anything in these terrible 4K transfers being offered other than pure profits by the responsible party? Sure, unassuming viewers will think it’s a 4K UHD so it’s obviously better, but they’re really getting a significantly inferior product for the money. It bums me out. I’m not even running a 4K PJ yet, and this upsets me every time. Because when I am ready to jump in, it’ll be slim pickings for truly great 4K films I have in my collection versus the 1080p Blu-ray’s. It’s ridiculous films are shot in 4-8K plus with all the bells and whistles necessary for an optimal experience, and this is what’s sold for distribution.

I know nothing about how these remasters are actually made, but if this is the end product, the studios should be thoroughly embarrassed and ashamed of the results. Is it a limitation of physical media in any way, or just cheap UHD post production for a cash grab?

...But from what I Saw, Heard and Felt was a Great Upgrade over the 2006 Bluray with 5.1 LPCM

I even posted a quick IRENE youtube, but not sure how long it will stay up, (posted in the "other" thread)
I've seen them deleted for copyright bs before, I'm trying to title the vids carefully to avoid tag's drawing attention.

Looks like Aron's got a Fix for Hellboy II up already, right down to single digit Crowson territory
My copy of the 4K/UHD should arrive today, if so I'll be throwing another youtube on my HT channel tonight.

The most disturbing thing is All the LFE/ULF is present in the DTS:X track on the 4K disc,
someone just decided to turn it all down to soundbar levels before release to the home market.

... the right software/hardware is all that's needed to not only restore, but actually surpass the original DTS-HD MA audio
(but talk of such voodoo shall not be spoken in this thread ) VVVVV

So HB2 follows the JP and FF2/3 trend. Looks like there is.somerhing wrong with the Universal DTS-X mixers which seems to be compacting full bandwidth audio.

Speaking of new vs "some" old mixes,,,,, flashback Thursday today for me and U-571 was up on the block. Even after huge new bass monsters of late, U-571 still brought the bass goods that the neighborhood could hear which is why it was an afternoon flick. Enjoyed It!!!!

What do they mean by “improve”. If it’s adding more Atmos ceiling channels then okay, that’s cool. But I can still tell a big difference in dynamic movie sound, especially bass. Streaming bass sounds really muddy compared to the disc due to all the compression.

Forget ceiling channels (the Neural X upmixer usually sounds better than the anemic ceiling use mixes put out by "professionals" anyway, IMO). The big news is they're reducing compression on Netflix (meaning it's Blu-Ray DD rate of 640kbps now, although if that's DD+, it'll be better than compressed BD quality (obviously never going to be uncompressed quality any time soon). Either way, it's a huge improvement over 192kbps they have been using.

Am I the only one that thinks the BEST version of Jurassic Park soundtrack wise was on the original DTS Laserdisc? I have that one here still and it shakes the damn room. The DVD and UHD do nothing of the sort (don't even recall the BD performance offhand). I just remember the JP DVD coming out and boy was it neutered. Everyone at the time thought so. Universal claimed they would fix it, but I sure as heck don't recall anyone mentioning a revised DVD at the time. I'd have to dig out my BD as I don't think I've tried it since my 6.1 to 11.1.6 upgrade last year and I'm not totally sure I've tried it since I moved to the new house. But I've got my laserdisc connected now (the Marantz AVR actually does a pretty decent job as a scaler and de-interlacer, better than my projector for sure).

The sad part is the new UHD DTS:X soundtrack on Jurassic Park didn't seem to do much with the overheads at all (I threw it on the 3D version and don't recall anything specific overhead when I watched it). Kind of like The Fast and the Furious DTS:X track, except that movie actually sounds pretty damn good here other than overhead use.

Oblivion is harder since it actually makes pretty good use of overheads in the Atmos mix. Is there a way to swap just the LFE tracks without a gazillion dollar encoder?
Mike Butny, GeoJustGeo and AmerCa like this.

First post in that thread has the details how to utilize it,
But you'll probably need more than a Def Tech PF-1500 sub to appreciate a difference below 20Hz

Same goes for Jurassic World > https://www.avsforum.com/forum/113-s...l#post56751494

I'm more concerned about tactile feel below 20Hz than the "sound" at this point (The DefTech drops like a stone at 21-22Hz or so naturally, but actually is pretty flat in the room until that point, but with Audyssey it at least drops off much more slowly, but that won't fix dynamic range, etc.) I've been looking at some tactile transducer options for at least a few of my chairs for sub-20Hz effects. That won't help overall dynamic range, though if they've changed that too (Disney).

That sounds like a bit of a pain to have to change the curve for every movie (and watch out if you forget to turn it off). It seems like it'd be more ideal to use the curves to "fix" the LFE tracks and then put them back in (if there were a way to do that short of buying the codecs, which aren't cheap, at least until the patents wear out of someone makes a 3rd party reconstructed encoder). I mean wouldn't I have to keep a laptop nearby just to edit curves? Where would I put it that wouldn't be a mess in the room? It doesn't talk to the MiniDSP via WiFi does it?
