Greetings,

I read that review. Matt seems like a very nice guy. I checked his equipment list and he reviews discs using a Pioneer Atmos Soundbar system:

Pioneer Surround Elite Atmos Soundbar FS-EB70

I don't mean to disparage anyone's set up, to each his own but, there's no way to competently review audio tracks like the one of War of the Worlds using a system with such limited capability.

This might explain his findings.

Regards,
That's bad considering he's reviewing audio performance of these discs and giving it a score. No way he can tell audio quality with that setup. I've never gone to that site and definitely have no reason now.

Also, if the ULF in the 4K version of War of the Worlds is neutered, then that is very disappointing and a pass for me. I really don't want to BEQ everything because a lot of studios are incompetent and continue mishandling audio. Sigh.

FYI Redbox has this movie in UHD if your area rents UHD discs.

Regards,
Yeah, a soundbar with a very small sub is more of a small living room or a bedroom system, certainly not for serious home theaters and enthusiasts. HighDefDigest really needs to set their bar much higher and insist that titles like this be reserved only for reviewers with adequate setups. I'm quite disappointed to discover this was how they reviewed it. It's like testing the speed of a new Ferrari by taking it sight seeing on a 30 MPH road. Intentional or not, it is in no way an accurate reflection of how it truly performs, IMHO.

Has anyone seen if the redo of Days of Thunder was equally as successful as the Top Gun UHD? If they even marginally similar success to TG then it will be an absolute MUST purchase for me. I love that movie.

Strangely DoT UHD doesn't have immersive audio. I don't understand why they left this one out and gave the others the Atmos treatment.

I caught on TV through crappy active speaker. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie even with essentially no audio (), and I kept imagine how awesome the action scenes would sound on a proper system. Right after I added to to my wish list. If you enjoy movies like Battle: LA or Battleship, in other words, popcorn action movies, you may enjoy this as well. Disclaimer: I enjoy plenty of dumb action movies, like the Red Dawn remake, to give you a point of reference.

Lol! I think it’s more like driving a Prius on a road course and using your imagination to fill in the blanks for what it would be like driving the Ferrari on the same course.
What a joke. That guy needs his reviewer card revoked. The only way that’s even ok is if it’s made very clear that the review is based on the foundation of a soundbar and fartbox.

I watched the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones last night and wow does the bass not dissapoint. I had it lower than normal but i could still hear rattles from the shelves. The UHD Disc does not disappoint in audio nor in video. This might be the best UHD content i have ever seen. I wonder if you guys did a graph of this episode or any from season 8.

The only one I know is from the BEQ thread, but he plots them all in one graph. Just try to distinguish the dashed green lines from around 30Hz on down as those are the untouched bass from all of those episodes.

Say Amazon actually buys AMC Theatres. What would that be like?

A curious thing happened Monday morning: Shares of struggling AMC Theatres leapt by as much as 56%, to $6.41, after a report circulated that Amazon held talks with the movie chain over a potential takeover.

The report's controversial publisher, the U.K.'s Daily Mail, said it was unclear if the discussions were still active or if they would lead to a deal, citing unnamed sources. (Neither AMC nor Amazon responded to Fortune's request for comment, though Amazon told others that it does not comment on speculation.) Whatever the report's veracity, the impact the speculation had on AMC's stock was very much real, and a fascinating development for the world's largest movie theater chain given its recent fortunes.

Well, considering AMC (and Regal) has said they won't be showing Universal movies anymore because Universal is going to offer straight to home PPV on new releases at the same time movies are in the theater, I would say that Amazon's bank account will allow them to survive for a little while longer than without. Which makes one wonder what Amazon is thinking as theaters seem like a bad investment. They are on their way to a slow death and studios bypassing them will speed up the process.

This movie is bonkers, on all levels. I bough it for the bass, stayed for the insane action. This movie was brought up a handful of times in the old bass thread, with mixed reviews, and overall it didn't seem to draw much interest, probably due to it's filming style. I didn't have any issue following the action, even with subtitles, but I know some have issue with the POV style. But the action, man! This movie is a must-see for any action junkie. It's crazy. But you're here for the bass, right?
@MOberhardt in the BEQ thread, recently brought back some attention to the movie, putting it in the category of bass monsters. And he's not wrong, because it delivers bass in spades, both it quantity an variety. For a 5.1 mix, this audio track is exceptional, and constantly makes use of all channels, with great directionality and precision. You're IN the movie practically at all times thanks to the immersive audio. This is great stuff!

If the action and audio are not enough for you, the film is also hilarious. It's very violent for sure, but it also has a very quirky sense of humor. I knew Sharlto Copley from other movies, but this one made me a fan of him. He's terrific in here. The storyline is absolutely crazy, but also incredibly fun. As you can tell, I enjoyed this movie A LOT. There's a marketing blurb in the cover that puts this movie in the same category as Mad Max: Fury Road. They're completely different movies, but the action in both is so crazy and exciting that guarantees multiple viewings. In that sense, they do belong in the same category, great audio included.

Like I said, the POV filming style could be a deal breaker for some, if you can't get into it. I find the fast editing of the Bourne movies, the Taken movies or some Resident Evil ones a lot more distracting and hard to follow than Hardcore Henry, but I don't know. I can only give this movie my highest recommendation. It's just so much fun.

I rented it for the family and was impressed. That turtle scene in the beginning was great! I will have to buy the UHD when it is on sale.

FYI Redbox has this movie in UHD if your area rents UHD discs.
I rented just because of Jim Carey. Love bass but don't like it when it is cheezyly inserted...kinda like what I call a sleeper bass movie. I have the tendency to crank up movies that I wouldn't expect to have a lot bass to compensate but then get one of those "oh f**k" moments and scramble to lower the bass for something stupid like a truck pulling up to a house.
