As far as VTF15 vs VTF3.5 - Honestly there is not much difference. Same amp, same driver, just the VTF15 has a bit bigger box which gives just a tad more extension and a bit more output below 30 hz. Above 30 hz, they might as well be the same sub, and the extra 2db at 20 and 1 db at 25 hz may not be obvious to the vast majority of people.

Dual VTF3.5 is the biggest value play you can make if you want duals now.
One key difference in the HSU subs is the increased port area the VTF-15H.2 has over the VTF-3.5. Port noise will be less of an issue with the big brother.

While I am a tower guy, I think bookshelves will work or smaller towers if the budget size is a concern.

For towers to bring anything to the game, they need to have 12 or 15 inch woofers and even then, you are just using them to fill in a tactile hole left when switching from high power large cone subs to the mains. They do have their uses, but assuming pops is not going for earthquake tactile with chest punch, bookshelves will be fine.

Speakers are tools, pick the one that accomplishes your goals is the best value you can get.

True. if you see yourself pushing the sub hard in the 25 hz and under range (like I know you do ), that can be a concern.

Single HSU, then after a while add the second, which would be the same sub.

if you get two smaller subs then after a while it will be a bit hard to upgrade as most people wouldn't have room for 3 or 4 subs.

For a large room, you’ll want to start with something as near as possible to the MLP to get any significant tactile response. If this is mainly just for your Dad, then no point in worrying about a flat response across the room which would be the point of multiple subs. Dad is only in one place at a time so get the biggest sub you can and park it as close to his seat as you can. +1 for HSU VTF-15 which I have in a similar large room. Intrigued by Chucky’s post about the Xtz 3x12, but it will cost a bit more.

I did exactly as you suggested with the VTF-15, and my Dad is ecstatic about his new setup. The sub sits just 4 feet from his MLP, and you can feel it down deep in your soul when it booms during action sequences.

His entire Emotiva+HSU combo is just plain epic, so I'm actually jealous as hell. LOL

LOL, That's awesome for your Dad!! I put in two 18" drivers in an infinite baffle that's setup right behind my MLP in a new theater I'm doing. I'm really enjoying it, but what surprised me the most is how impressed I am with the HSU after experiencing the dual 18" drivers. VTF-15 is an amazing sub! Too bad you're feeling jealous now, maybe a new sub purchase in your future
