Bass EQ for Filtered Movies

Saw the Godzilla (1998) UHD graph in the other thread, and it looks to be -10dB at 25Hz, but looks to have plenty of content into the single digits to salvage with BEQ. I’ll hold off on watching it until later this week when BOSS 2.0 is done, and give Godzilla and Hellboy II my first demos...if there’s a Godzilla BEQ by then.

One of the reviews for the Godzilla remaster mentioned the earth shaking bass, makes me wonder how capable some of these people’s systems are or maybe they just prefer 30Hz bass, which can be pretty awesome for replicating ground effects, i.e. the movie San Andreas was still pretty great before BEQ. I don’t expect everyone to be capable into the single digits, without running MA’s, nearfield subs, or whatever (my subs alone certainly aren’t), but I think it’d certainly help for professional reviewers ULF to extend at least into the teens to see what they’re missing and have a bit more TR than an average theater system. But then I guess that’s not what most people will experience with just a single subwoofer anyway.

I just want people to be excited about the audio possibilities in these tracks, and to know there’s so much more available to experience than just a soundbar or 30Hz mix can provide.

So much Better with BEQ!!!! Thanks Aron!

Just finished Godzilla and cuing up HellBoy 2 once more for a glorious Sunday afternoon Bass-Fest at 120"
...since both were pre-viewed on the little 65" OLED first time around.

I got all my yardwork chores out of the way first thing in the morning.
and wifey is gone shopping for the afternoon, so Reference volume is Rockin' the Pio-Cave!

Speaking of which, Bang on with the -4.5 MV reduction on Godzilla
...that track is crazy LOUD! on ALL channels.

New here but been BEQing for a few months now - the difference is so huge it always feels lacking to watch movies without it!
Massive thanks to Aron and everyone for getting so much content out there

Wanted to request BEQ for a couple of older UHDs if at all possible

My Mini-DSP just got here from Hong Kong, that was fast! I'm going to hook it up and re calibrate then try something like The Matrix or Pacific Rim. Can't wait!!! You guys talked me into this and I'm all in!

Funny aside, I've always been against using a "house curve" because I thought it was against the artists vision. Welp, I just got severely disabused of that notion this week, quite by accident. My subwoofer setup consists of two in-floor Infinite Baffle manifolds each loaded with two FiCar IB18s. They are massive overkill for this 1500cu/ft sealed room of mine. So it made sense that I didn't notice one of them was totally unplugged after my recent Atmos renovation. Anyway, while cleaning up wires, I noticed this and plugged the corner loaded IB back in. Didn't bother recalibrating, just for ****s and giggles.

Now, I have no idea how much extra dB this thing added, but MY GOD. I think I understand this whole "House curve" thing.

I watched some (remember, NOT Bass-EQed yet) fight scenes from Pacific Rim.... and daaaaamn. It felt like every giant punch was hitting the floor of my room. The couch was jumping! I could feel the waves rippling the floor (standard 2x10 construction above my basement) under my feet!

The funny thing is, I went downstairs to observe the cone movement while playing back the most intense scenes and the things were barely moving. The amp signal lights were not even flickering. I'm pretty sure I have headroom for whatever BassEQ does. Pumped!!!!

I don't understand the -4.5 MV suggestion on these. I've always just adjusted the main volume until the dialog is as loud as it can be without any discomfort. Is that basically all that suggestion is?

It's a suggestion for those who run at or near reference levels. If you find your usually at -5dB MV,
this title will sound harsh in the higher frequencies unless your reduce your processors MV to -9.5dB.

I ignored the -4.5 initially because I'm usually well under reference levels,
But I was running a little hotter than my normal MV and had to reach for the remote.

Hot bass can be pure bliss, but loud higher frequencies are painful.

Time to Load BEQ'D App...

I know I don't have a high powered intel laptop,
but experienced some pretty slow load times for the BEQ-D app about a month ago.

I'm totally okay with a couple minutes as I will only need to update the repo/merge once a week at the most.
My laptop may be a turd by most standards here, but only gets used for the web browser, email and BEQ.
So I wasn't terribly picky when I needed to grab something quick/cheap when the last one failed.
**UPDATE**

I tried to pin a BEQ-D app shortcut to my task bar about a week ago, and somehow it didn't stick
and I guess I lost the entire app and couldn't find it anywhere in my laptop directories...very odd

But I suppose it was a blessing in disguise, because I was hesitant to change anything when I finally had everything working.

I went back to the first page and tried to follow my own download/install instructions (and 3ll3d00d's manual)
I ended up with a long overdue upgrade to the most current pre-release 0.7.0-Beta.12, and this time I picked the Setup_small.exe to download

...as a computer caveman it took a couple clicks for me to locate the exe files so I added this screen shot to page 1

Wow!!! My load time with the new version dropped to just 7 seconds
...even on my turd of a laptop with crappy AMD processor.

Just wanted to say a big Thank You @3ll3d00d
...and if anyone is still using an older/slower version of the BEQ-D...don't be afraid to upgrade!

Spoiler!

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I think the movie title is 303 Squadron, (not Squadron 303)
So if anyone is looking for it on the list on page 1, you won't find it under the "S" titles. I put it just below 300

I just noticed when I refreshed the repo yesterday that it showed up in the "S" titles, not the numbers.
Not a big deal I suppose, it's a UK exclusive and not many people own that one or even heard about it in North America.

IMDb shows Squadron 303, which is why I wrote it that way, but it seems everywhere else has it as 303 Squadron, so I just changed it.

It would appear the movie was based on the book, published in 2010.
(I looked it up thinking it might be another one of those Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone country code issues)

I'm going to leave it as Squadron 303 for now in the repo since we still have the bug where renamed files don't get deleted properly. It might actually be the correct name too. Searching on it I see it both way but both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes have it as Squadron 303. It probably depends on how it's being translated from the Polish title, DYWIZJON 303.

Hi there, BEQ thread!

I'm just dipping my toes in this pond, but what I've sampled so far has me convinced it's worth it and I've made the correct decision.

I have recently bought the miniDSP 2x4 HD along with the setup mic from their website (mic is still en-route).

Here is what I've come to understand in what I need to do with my new miniDSP HD with my incoming calibration mic:

Note, I'll only be using the miniDSP as an inbetween (AVR -> miniDSP -> Sub)

Use REW with the miniDSP and setup mic to fine tune my sub/BassEQ to set a "house curve" that I can leave 24/7 on config slot 1 in the miniDSP.

THEN, once the BassEQ has done it's work, re-run Audyssey XT-32 on my Marantz. I've been told this will not do anything to the BassEQ 'calibration' that has already been done. However, I've been told that I should do the opposite - run the Audyssey XT32 first, and then potentially tweak my house curve to be "not flat". (I've admittedly read to do this both ways - is there a consensus on which is correct?)

And THEN, if I want to load a pre mixed BassEQ movie filter from the huge github repository, I would load that into config slot 2, making sure to switch it back to config slot 1 after the movie is done.

Sorry if this come across as pretty beginnerish - this is all pretty new to me.

You don't run Audyssey after using BassEQ. You run Audyssey after flattening your sub response. Then after running Audy, you can create a default house curve if desired (otherwise Audy would undo it). This is totally separate from BassEQ which you would do for each movie after all of this other stuff.

The Arrival of a Train by the Lumiere Brothers. That train should rock the house but you get ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! Huge disappointment.

The 4 Config slots are just separate memory locations for different uses that you can shift on-the-fly with a remote.
you can turn different sub/shakers levels up/down or mute them completely for Night mode. None are BEQ specific.

Some examples for using the 4 Config slots could be:

Config 1 for loading BEQ Movie + HC merged xml files (BEQ to Input 1+2 and HC auto loads to the 4 Output channels)
Config 2 input channels bypassed, house curve on the 4 output channels (use for regular TV programming with no BEQ)
Config 3 input channels bypassed, house curve on output channels but sub output levels reduced for Night mode.
Config 4 input channels bypassed, output channels bypassed (use this Config for Audyssey/YPAO room correction)

You could setup a Config for 2Ch Stereo Music, one for Multi-Channel music, one for Gaming etc....it's totally up to you.

The house curve settings get manually entered on the 4 output channels (depending how many subs you're using)
if you're using different subs or they are in different locations, each can have their own delay, level, phase and EQ settings.
You would then hit the save button in the miniDSP software to export an xml file to be saved in a separate HC folder on your laptop.

Which of the 4 Config slots you want to use is irrelevant when creating a house curve, it's always going to be on the output channels only.
and once you create a HC.xml file it doesn't care which Config slot you created it on, it will load to the one you specify in the miniDSP software.

I open my miniDSP software to load a BEQ into Config 1
Where the xml file always loads to the 2 Input channels.

In order to merge the Movie BEQ xml files with your House Curve xml on the output channels
You must use the BEQ-D App's merge function that will combine the entire repo list with your HC

...you may get a pop-up saying your movie list we be deleted, click yes to overwrite all your files.

The Config File is asking where my House Curve.xml file is located,
The Output Directory is my BEQ movie folder where the movie list will be stored.

Then hit Load function in the miniDSP software and go to your directory where all your movie BEQ's+HC Merged xml files will be stored.
The BEQ portion goes to the input channels and your house curve loads to the output channels automatically.
