I've been following this thread for months and finally decided to grab a minidsp and jump in. What a difference! I thought I was happy with the bass my theater was making before but wow, I had no idea what I was missing. We on AVS go crazy spending hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars tweaking our system and upgrading our equipment for a few dB gain in a narrow bandwidth and this $200 piece of hardware and free data gives dozens of dB gain over half the bass spectrum - amazing (and probably the biggest bang-for-the-buck upgrade I've made in home audio).

Many thanks to @aron7awol , @PioManiac , @3ll3d00d , and @DesertDog for your hard work!

SPEAKERS: 3 x DIYSG 1099's LCR; DIYSG HTM 6's and 8's surround; 4 x RSL C34E Atmos; 4 x UM18-22 Mini Marty's.
COMPONENTS: Denon X4400; Minidsp 2x4 HD; 2 x Jensen Iso Sub 2RX; 2 x NX6000d; Epson 5040UB.

@aron7awol there will be a beta up shortly which adds an option in Preferences named "Averaging", it has two options: Mean, Median. It applies to the way the average is calculated, current release uses mean, change to median and add the same signal again and you'll get the median version for comparison. Can you try this against something like Red Sparrow?

I used some random sample I had locally (BR2049 car landing scene) and you get the following, mean is yellow btw. The 100Hz spike is the bit to look at in this example.

Note that I expect this will change the reported signal level significantly for some (most?) tracks.

I just got the repo caught up with everything from the last couple of day. While doing it I cleaned up the TV show file names so that they're all on a consistent format and included the streaming service in the name if it's not from disc. Due to that, I'd recommend nuking the git repo folder and letting BEQd redownload them if you're using the merge feature. Doing so will clean up the mass amount of duplicate files you'll have otherwise.

Along the lines of renaming things. I've stuck with using "gain" in the titles because it started that way so that everything is consistent instead of switching to "MV" like the graphs have it. Is there a preference among everyone on "gain" vs "MV"? I can go through and do a mass rename on every file and then start using it if there is. I don't really want to do it without consensus though since it'll muck with the BEQd merge and everyone will have to reset the repo after the change if I do it. It'd be nice if dulwich (the git library) ever fixed this bug.

@PioManiac It looks like the front page is missing punisher season 2

OT.... median option is a recent addition to scipy so I thought to myself "I wonder if I can hack the code to produce a percentile too" .... then I see it cites Appendix B of https://arxiv.org/pdf/gr-qc/0509116.pdf ("FINDCHIRP: An algorithm for detection of gravitational waves from inspiraling compact binaries") and I back slowly away from the stats

Amen! I am so spoiled that I'm no longer watching a movie without BEQ as I rather wait for you. I told my wife before that I rather not watch a movie on TV and now I'm telling her I rather not watch a movie without beq. Thanks everyone especially to Aron, Piomaniac, Dood, and Desertdog for working tirelessly for our community

I'd love for you to add median as a third line because I think that would be the best way to observe median compared to the other two on a bunch of different mixes and decide where its value lies, but I'm guessing that they way you have structured the existing code would make that much more difficult than replacing mean with median by toggling that setting

Thanks DD, Good catch!

I probably glanced over the post back in January but skipped it when I saw 2017 thinking it was a S1 update.

Pretty sure Season 2 release was 2019

Another one that should read 2019

I binged S1 this weekend just so I could remember who all the character were. (in all 3 decades)
It's been too long between seasons to rely on my crap memory.

TV Shows are usually listed by the year of their first season and not the year a particular season aired. It's more of an identifier than an air date to group them together in the case of multiple shows having the same name.

I was referring to Aron's error on his posting of the graph
He has both Seasons on his graph page as 2017, same goes for Dark.

Should be 2017 S1 and 2019 S2 for both titles (all 4 pages indicate 2017)

I did that intentionally in both cases. I am identifying the TV series using its title and original release year (in case there is more than one series with the same name), and then the season, and then the audio format. Identifying TV series in that manner is the standard that I've always seen, which includes scrapers that pull info/artwork from TVDB.

ok, my bad

I was just trying to follow a similar format as Movie releases

For example:

The Mummy (2017) 4K/UHD/ATMOS (Sept.12/2017)
The Mummy (1999) 4K/UHD/DTS:X (Sept.12/2017)

(just happened to release the same month/year)

It's been too long between seasons to rely on my crap memory.
My wife and I watched some Season 1 recap videos and read a recap article and then talked through all the characters, and I paused it a few times during the first episode so we could make sure the characters who were we thought they were, and what their relationships to the other characters were.

What a crazy show! Love it!

All good, brother!

The year I list in my posts is always intended to be that first year listed in your post above. It's the year that identifies the movie or series if there is more than one with the same name.

The second date that you list is the disc release date, right? Or in the case of a TV series, the date the season was released? So that's just additional information not included in my post. I think we're both doing things consistently for movies and TV series

this was the 5 min bodge to get something usable in there, I don't think it will take that much more effort to make it available everywhere but it will slow everything down a bit (50% more lines to calculate and draw) and some of the changes will be quite dull to write so prefer not to do that until I try a few more tracks.

The second date that you list is the disc release date, right? Or in the case of a TV series, the date the season was released? So that's just additional information not included in my post. I think we're both doing things consistently for movies and TV series

Yes, whenever you post a new BEQ,
I try to provide users with specific bluray release its compatible with.
The Theatrical release date is only a starting point for me,

My first reference is to go to Bluray.com and grab the earliest available "Disc release date" on bluray that matches the audio format you posted the BEQ for.

For Example, Tron legacy was simple enough...

But some Movies have many Bluray releases for the same Theatrical release date,
...so I have to find the one that's the closest match to the BEQ you post.

For example, The Fifth Element (1997):

Original 2006 release was LPCM 5.1, in 2010 a TrueHD track was added to the Re-Mastered BD)
and you have to go to the 2015 Mastered in 4K release to get the ATMOS track (same as the 2017 4K/UHD ATMOS release)

In the case of "City of Lies" that you posted I found nothing at first,
so I had to change the country code from U.S, to World wide to reveal it was available in Italy

It's a lot more work doing the detective work sometimes, but I figure if someone really wants to watch a movie with BEQ,
making sure they are using the same release as the date on bluray.com is more defined and disc specific than just year the movie was released in theaters.

(sorry for the long-winded explanation)

Hello all,

Wondering if anyone has experienced this before.

I had (luckily) finished watching a fairly heavy bass movie near reference, and was about halfway through Dark Season 2 Episode 1 when my Crowsons started to bottom out during a relatively quiet (bass) scene.

After 10 seconds I got concerned and thought my Crowson amp was failing, but checked my Minidsp 2x4hd output and noticed that my channel 3 output (Crowson front row seating) was significantly higher (about 25db) than my channel 1 (front subs) and channel 2 (rear sub).

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Very glad that this didn't happen during a reference film or a heavy bass scene, as it could have spelled trouble. I at first reduced my crown amp from 24 to 1, then reduced my minidsp down via phone by about 25db then turned my crowson amp back up to finish the episode.

When taking the screenshot I returned my minidsp to near regular output (you will see channel 3 in low negatives) but MV back down to take a screenshot of the issue (attached) without clipping

I will also note that my Channel 3 output is linked with Channel 1 on the input stage (screenshot also attached). I imagine this is a weird anomaly and am hoping a restart to my PC will fix it (have not yet tried, decided to write this post first).

FYI channel 4 is off on purpose as that channel is for rear crowson seating.

Thanks,

^^^ You'll have to show us the filters you have on each of those outputs to look for an explanation, but a quick guess is that you have HPF enabled on output 1 and 2 but not 3?

@aron7awol , thanks again for doing the Da Vinci Code series

And to help you get to 800 (and help those of us who refuse to watch anything without BEQ anymore, but have a backlog of unwatched titles), another series that I have but haven't watched yet on UHD that has TrueHD Atmos is the DC Comics series RED (2010) and RED 2 (2013), if you would be so kind, sir

Seems odd that it happened during this show only halfway through, and I have watched at least 30-40 full length movies with BEQ and never experienced anything like this before, and have not made any changes to my output filters in over 6 months

But I have attached as you requested, you are right, there is a highpass filter on channel 1 and 2.

Computer is restarted, not running any films, I loaded up the Dark Season 2 repo and am getting about 100dBFs and channel 1 and 2 and hitting high 60dBFs on channel 3 with zero content playing.

Never really monitored this before, maybe this is normal even when no content is playing since no HPF and there is a large boost in very LF content (which I want my Crowsons to get but not my SWs) but I know what happened last night during viewing was DEFINITELY not normal/as intended, and it has not happened before.

Thought I would post this here. Now that I am done setting everything up, I need to dial these bad boys in. That will take some trial and error then back o BEQ!!!

If I'm using a minidsp HD 2x4 for ONLY BEQ, do I need to use the low pass crossovers or can I bypass ALL the crossovers in all the channels?

Thanks!
