I’m getting a kick out of following the BEQd discussion interspersed without comment by Aaron’s workmanlike and never ending new movie additions. Thanks again for your efforts gents!

BassEQ Unforgiven (1992) DTS-HD MA 5.1

Tons of noise in this one so I could only grab a bunch of 20-40Hz content.

No, I meant what is the art for determining the overall BEQ curve fitted to each movie. Does aron7awol simply try to match the max/avg spectral levels across bass frequencies down to 10 Hz using the spectral graphs, or is there more to it?

The reason I asked about help from movie studios is I have several movies in both DVD and BluRay/4K format. In almost all cases I would say the DVD format doesn't really need BEQ, but the newer formats absolutely need it (eg, "Master and Commander"). IOW, it seems to me that the DVD version in many cases could be the BEQ standard for restoring bass to the same movie in BluRay/4K format.

I'm not trying to imply anything bad about BEQ, in fact, I'm in the process of setting up a miniDSP HD on my LFE for MSO and BEQ correction. I'm just curious how the curves for each movie are determined.

Thanks,
Darrell

In general I'm trying to follow the natural shape of the mix, while bringing the ULF to a consistent level mix-to-mix so that those of us who have tuned our systems to the level that we like down there will get a consistent experience. At the same time, I'm trying to smoothly transition between the ULF and midbass, and trying to discern the filtering that was used and counter it, while watching out for noise and inconsistencies in the filtering. So I'm really trying to balance all of those things and tapping into my previous experiences designing them and then playing them to settle on what I think will be the most consistent and enjoyable experience for a particular mix, which sometimes means striking the right compromises when there are issues such as noise or inconsistent filtering.

Quick easy question..

If you set your sub spl level to let's say 80db(for more excitement) before you hookup a minidsp 2x4hd unit..

Then..

After you hookup the minidsp, and don't touch anything.. Jist leave flat, will spl levels be same or does minidsp drop the spl levels..

What happens after you upload BEQ filters... Does the overall spl drop..

If so Aprox how much....

I want to maintain my initial spl level...

Thanks

That depends on which MiniDSP and how the jumpers are set.

The subwoofer level increases. By how much varies on a per movie per scene/LFE effect basis.

Watched Captain Marvel with BEQ yesterday. Really nice. Because of Atmouse I had increased MV to - 6 for clearer dialog(normally I watch at - 10) That resulted in clipping though and my crown xls 2502 power cycled at the 1:40 mark. Brutal!!!! 🙂

Captain Marvel has a -1.5dB MV adjustment, so if you played it +4 relative to your normal the bass will end up 5.5dB hotter than a typical BEQ on your system. You don't have to follow the MV adjustments, but you should be aware of them and the impact of the different MV change you are deciding to make.

Your receiver can very likely put out a subwoofer signal that's higher than 2Vrms, but it may work okay for you depending on your specific settings and how loudly you listen.

I did a quick check through my UHD collection (around 300 UHD Blu's), and these are the ones I came up with that don't have BEQs:
 • Push
 • Salt
 • Shape of Water
 • Snitch
 • Sully
 • Unforgiven

Have any of those?
Huge tanks to @aron7awol for making short work of my list (above, I missed Patriot's Day in my quick once-over, but you even got that one as well, thanks to @ MOberhardt )

I know streaming series take a little more time, but if you get bored (or for anyone else who's into Kate Beckinsale), there's a series on Amazon Prime Video called The Widow that I watched in UHD/DD+ that was decent enough for the BEQ treatment; otherwise, I'll need to thoroughly check my collection against the list to see if there are any more potentials

I've seen people report this before, never been able to reproduce it though so no idea what causes it atm. If the small one works, just use that. The small one is theoretically slower internally but I don't think anyone can tell the difference in practice.

looks like a new bug related to the addition of the median curve (added https://github.com/3ll3d00d/beqdesigner/issues/288), to workaround change the displayed analysis types using the dropdown (to some other value and then back to the selected one) and the graphs should appear

Well except for the median graph. It won't appear, but peak and average do.

Edit: Median will appear if I load the signal with only peak and average displayed and change to all, but not if I load it with it set to all and then change to something else and then back to all.
