Sunfire HRS-12 Plate Amp

The plate amp is bad. Constant hum. I replaced 2 power supply caps. One was bad. Still have same problem.

I’m just looking for some suggestions. Send in amp for repair? Probably will cost around $250. Buy a new plate amp? Buy an external power amp? Or just chuck it and buy another sub. Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Unless you can measure the native FR of the product somehow using a generic amp could easily damage a sub like the hrs-12.

I would say if you were 100% happy with the performance, fix the amp for $250(assuming you get a reasonable warranty with the repair?).

But if the upgrade bug was nibbling to begin with---well---

The hrs12 were like $600 iirc? At the same pricing consider the vtf-2 as one example. Larger but much better performer. Deeper extension and much more clean output as well.

I also had a Paradigm subwoofer that the plate amp broke. They fixed it for $125.

I don’t have much faith in Switching Power Supplies. They seem to have a high failure rate and are difficult to repair.

At work, (retired) I had no trouble repairing the power supplies of old.
