Dual monolith 10’s for bedroom (or maybe 12’s?)

Looking to upgrade my dual SVS SB12-NSD subs to something a little more substantial in my bedroom.

The room is about 16x16 with 7.5 ceilings. There is also a small hallway and bathroom that is not part of the 16x16 area.

I was looking at dual Monolith 10’s but in a few reviews it mentions lack of mid bass. These will cross at 80 to PSA 210T’s and a 210C.m so not sure if midbass matters as that will be done by the LCR’s?

The Monolith 10’s will be quite a bit bigger than the current SVS subs. But will fit nicely in the spots. I keep thinking about the Monolith 12’s even though that is another $500+ and will not fit as nicely.

Anyone have thoughts that had listened to or had both the 10 and 12?

Being a bedroom, and the 3rd system, we don’t listen loud in this room -15 would be about the max level. In this case would the 12 even matter?

Thanks
Ray

Those are some serious speakers for a bedroom setup ! Why not try a sealed 15 from PSA as well

How about a pair of RSL Speedwoofer 10s ? Every comment I've read says they rock. maybe not as powerful as the Monos, but since you are not going to drive them particularly hard, that advantage is wasted. Plus, RSL is less expensive. If they don't impress, they have free returns. All it will cost is gas to the nearest UPS Store ...

Take the subs you have and use them as bedside tables, I bet the slam factor will go up a few notches.
In all seriousness, can you place one of your subs near field, for added slam?

One sub will be next to a night stand on my side of the bed. The other will be in the front right corner.

I am limiting my sub choices to subs I can buy on eBay as I have a pretty big credit on that site plus they have 24 month 0% interest through PayPal right now. So unfortunately that rules out the PSA subs.

If that's the case then you might want to go with the 12s to be safe. Though with your speakers you could use a 60hz crossover on the 10s and still have great mid-bass punch. Still, this being AVS bigger is always better.

Ha!

I know! But it is a bedroom.

My other systems are bass overkill, 4 PSA triax subs in my living room, 4 JTR S2 subs plus midbass modules in my game room and 2 JTR Growlers in my garage.

The Monolith 12 is flat out awesome. Nearly bullet-proof and has a really clean and accurate sound. The Monolith 10 is not nearly as capable and it can be made to chuff if you drive it hard enough or have some really deep LFE. The 10 sounds darn good, but it is a very noticeably inferior sub to the 12. With that being said, dual 12's in a bedroom of less than 2000 ft^3 is quite a bit of firepower and if you aren't going to be pushing whatever subs you pick, the 12's might not be worth the extra $$. Either of these ported subs will have a output advantage lower in range over the SB12-NSD.

So I get the physics aspect, but I keep seeing things like this mentioned when someone has a 10 & 12" in the same conversation. It baffles me a bit. All else being equal (power, ideal cabinet volume/tuning, etc), is going up 2" really that night and day?

I've never A/B'd a 10 & 12 at the same time, but you'd believe you didn't know what bass was until you reached 12" from some of the conversations and reactions after moving up to it. But strangely few speak of such a drastic difference going from 8 to 10 or 12 to 15.

Totally off topic but one cant help but admire your extremely potent subwooferage. How do the T18's compare with the S2's. Love all the sealed bass you have going on.

I clicked on this thread just to see who wanted dual monoliths in their bedroom and had a sneaking suspicion it was either you or an evil bass twin. Lol, rock on!

As mix master said, the consensus in the monolith thread from the people that have experienced both subs was that the 12” is a much better value and performer, so it’d be silly not to try and fit it in. I think there’s a couple reviews floating around comparing the trio of monolith subs.

I haven’t seen nearly as many people talk the monolith subs since their launch. Let us know how they sound! After moving triaxes and S2’s, the monolith’s HDF will seem light by comparison. I gave these subs some unfair grief when they came out because of the use of HDF and THX certification, but they seem to be nearly bulletproof with low distortion and get great reviews. It’s on my short list for ID subs I’d like to demo.

Speakers: PSA MTM-210T x2, MTM-210C, MT-110SR x2; Atmos-SVS Satellite x2, DIY Volt-10 x2
Subs: PSA V1801 x2, DIY: 18" RSS460HO, 15" RSS390HO x2, BOSS w/JBL CX1200 x6
MA’s: Crowson Tech x2
Processing: Denon X4200, NU6KDSP, 3KDSP

I have the predecessor to the T18 which is the Triax. It has 3 beastly 15's in it - I believe it has more low end output but gives up a touch to the T18 in higher bass. I had a subwoofer GTG at my house a few years ago. We played a single Triax against a single S2 in my large gameroom. The S2 had more output for sure. We were able to get the Triax to make some strange noises at ridiculous levels and could not get the S2 to do that. Under normal circumstances at reference or below I don't think you could tell the difference.

LOL - I ended up ordering the 10's on Friday and immediately tried to cancel the order but couldn't.....they are coming tomorrow, but I am refusing the shipment so they get sent back (was told to do this by a monoprice support person). I placed the order for the dual 12's today and should have them in a couple days. I can make them fit but just barely.

I can take some.

Not much to see in my gameroom as 2 of the S2’s and the JTR 215RT’s are behind my screen - you can see those in my avatar.

It's not just the driver size...it's the bigger cab, dual ports, more power etc.

It was posted earlier in the monolith thread as a one day only sale.

You have to enter the coupon/promo code Surprise2. I just tried on the 15” monolith and it does indeed work for 20% off select items over $500. Sorry if you just missed it!

I wonder if they would honor the discount...that’s $160 off of one or $300 off a pair of 12” when you add them in the cart!

I would at least call Monoprice and see if they will adjust your amount down the $300 difference.

Thanks to those that alerted me to the sale price. $600 each for this sub is just nuts!

Can wait to get them even though it has been a pain.

I was able to pre-refuse the shipment for tomorrow.
