Subwoofer upgrade, useful?

I am in the never ending cycle of upgrading equipment and currently ordering new speakers(Revel M126be bookshelves) in a dedicated 2.1 system. I am running a SB2000 subwoofer that from my REW measurements is plenty for the space(21x14x8).

With this upgrade I thought about getting the Revel B112(v2) to get a nice matching look in the system and better performance. But, I got to thinking "does a subwoofer upgrade matter?"

Ive seen enough people here, more or less, of the opinion that a subwoofer that does the job is the same as the next and wont sound/blend/or otherwise integrate any different. Is this true or to what extent is it "true"?

System: Cambridge 851A, Cambridge DACMAGIC 100, JVC XL-Z1050TN, Rega RP6, Vincent PHO-8, Revel M16(modified crossover), SVS SB2000. A bunch of monster power conditioning junk

V: Samsung NU8000, Nvidia Shield TV

If you want a real upgrade skip the Revel B112v2, and get the sealed Rythmik G25HP. Dual opposed 15 inch drivers with 1800 watt amp. $2,300 delivered.

I don't think I've ever seen someone say that here. They would probably be laughed off the forum.

Many variables to consider. At 86DB sensitivity what are you powering your Revels with? 2352^3 is a decent size room and if your volume levels are moderate a sub upgrade imo would be more of an aesthetic change vs bass improvement for the most part. What are your listening habits, volume, type of music?

If you have the power to get some good volume out of your Revels and do like to turn it up and really want a performance upgrade vs just aesthetic,, pretty hard not to concur with the previous post. Rythmik's G25HP will be a dramatic improvement and fill that room with a lot more high quality bass and more SPL down low. The SVS is a good sub but looking for more performance the Rythmik will smoke it.

So the real question is,,,,, aesthetics only, or significant performance upgrade??

-Marantz SR-8012
-Yamaha BD-A1060
-Funk 21.0LX Master/Slave combo 4800 watts RMS/9600watts (peak)-
-Chane A-2.4 L/C/R
-Chane A-1.4 side/rear surrounds.

I think that would deconstruct my condo, my SB2000 is set to around 30% gain and my REW curve still looks like this with my amp at -17db. crossover is set to 60hz on the subwoofer, no crossover control on the amp

Oh condo, you may have wanted to include that info in your post. Performance upgrade then is out the window, different subs can have a different sound signature the Revel may have that and resolve the upgrade itch somewhat. The G25HP will get you evicted. I double checked and realize the Revel doesn't have automated EQ so other than aesthetics and maybe a different sound signature imo more of a lateral move but giving the Revel the edge.

Well, I only really turn things up when the neighbors arent home. Which is pretty often. So I treat things like I dont have neighbors.

As far as volume, nightly TV/movie I listen around 70-75db, movies I push to about 85-95. My amp is 120w, so plenty of power for decent levels. No EQing for now, in the future I plan to change up the amp setup to something I can use a DSP with, but thats for another time.

You don't need to change the amp to get DSP, you could get a Mini DSP and add that to your system. So long as your amp as analog inputs for the source you can add the mini dsp between your source and the amp and tweak your eq curve till your hearts content.

Well then,, if you treat the place as though your neighbors arent home due to them not been there often then we could put the G25HP back on the table. Very well reviewed sub incredible sound quality been servo controlled, and lots of "clean" SPL. Available in piano black to match your Revels too. All depends if your OCD want a matching Revel sub,, or if you want a big quality performance upgrade?

Rythmik E15hp would be a solid upgrade. The G25 would be in a entire different realm of performance capability. I am not sure you would use half it's potential.
