Just got new AVR and Speakers, need sub!

Just got myself a Denon x1500 and NHT SuperZero, SuperOne's, and SuperCenter. Now I need a sub to complete my system.

Budget: $400 - I look at great deals here, slickdeals, and other deal sites daily for this stuff. I'm willing to wait for a $700 sub to sink to $399.

Room Dimensions - 18x25 - ish. Bigger than a bedroom, but on the small/medium size of a living room.

Primary Use - Mainly TV and Movies. We haven't listened to music yet on our current HT, but the new Denon works with Alexa so my wife wants to try it. I imagine if we did, we would be in another room with the volume up higher....if that matters. But mainly TV/Movies.

Listening Habits - Not high volumes. Medium to low volumes.

Some subs I was eye'ing -
Infinity R12 = $199
BOSTON ACOUSTICS ASW250 = $199
BIC America F12 = $210
BIC PL-200 = $250
Polk Audio PSW505 = $299
RSL Speedwoofer 10S = $400
ELAC Debut 2.0 SUB3010 = $449
Monolith 10" = $499
SVS SB-1000 = $499
SVS PB-1000 = $499

Or,

The RSL Speedwoofer has gotten a lot of praise, although it doesn't play very low for a ported sub.

RSL has free returns, should you try one and not like it.

That's kind of the gist I'm getting elsewhere too. But, the post above has the BIC as the avs #1 sub? "1. Editor’s Pick: Bic Acoustech PL-200 II" Sup with that? I almost pulled the trigger on it at $250.

If you can wait a couple months, there will be a pre-sale for Power Sound audio's new sub, price should be around $599. It will blow everything away in that price bracket.

From your list the Monolith THX Select is the top choice, IMO. Followed by the PB-1000. Best bet is to wait a while until Labor Day, which will spawn some sales. The Monolith has been as low as $375 and the PB-1000 is usually around $400 in the SVS outlet during their holiday sales. Both of these subs offer 20Hz performance with a linear sound. The Monolith can even be operated sealed. The other subs on your list are mostly budget subs and none of them offer much performance below 30Hz. With a $400 budget, best move is to steer clear of the budget subs.

You have a big room. So SVS NSD PB 12. It often comes on sale. If you can not wait for the sale, go with at least SVS PB 2000.

You should look at HSU's VTF line.. they will rock your space and are often overlooked. They've been in business since the early 1990's Peace. --> http://www.hsuresearch.com/subwoofers.html

Sure.

Anywho, Tom will have a new Sub from $500-600 range and it will probably be the best in that price range OP. You should email PSA customer service and tell him your goals and maybe you can get in on the pre-sale.

Unfortunately the PB2000 is above my price range. I would go for the 1000 if the price drops a bit.

How does the SVS outlet work? I go there, see some subs with no price. I click find "International Dealer", since I'm in US then I click find a retailer. Which then just sends me directly to that retailer's website...which doesn't have any outlet prices.

Hi Chris,

We're planning a smaller, sealed model in that price range later this year.

How large is your room? If it's on the larger side and you enjoy action movies at louder volume ported will probably work best. The hsu vtf-2 is on sale now IIRC, like $565 shipped? That's a terrific bargain..

Wow that is why I like PSA, they are honest , what other company would recommend a competitor's product?

If you bump up your budget a V1510 would make a great sub.

I thought the same thing. I even went as far as saying I was willing to pay a little more and wait for their new line. He said

nah, our new sub is smaller and sealed. If you said "I HAVE to go with a sub smaller than say a 15 inch cube"...then we could talk..
But without worrying abotu size, you will maximize performance potential(per dollar) by going larger and vented.

He also said this, which echo's most of what others have said.

If you must stick to 500 or less the pb1000 and mono10 are both good options.

Yup I agree.

I would stay away from Monoprice, go check out the owners thread. if you need ported and around 500-600 HSU, SVS or Rythmik FTW. You can also check out SVS outlet store for a PB12-NSD that would be an awesome sub for around $450

Not sure what you are looking at, but here's a link to the SVS outlet. They currently have a PB-1000 for $475.99 and $449.99.

Absolutely no reason to "stay away" from the Monolith subs. They have a full 5 year warranty, which is better than HSU or Rythmik. If there does happen to be an issue with a Monolith sub, they will send you a new one. The Monolith THX Select 10 is the only 10" sub and least expensive sub to achieve the Audioholics large room rating. The Monolith 10 is a top notch sub for under 5 bills. I have two of them and two of the Monolith 12's and never had a single issue. Hope this helps.

Subs>RBH I-12e, I-12. HSU VTF-15H mk2. Monolith THX 12(x2)/THX 10(x2). XTZ 1X12. SVS PB-1000(x2). Speakers>JBL Studio 270/235c/230/225c, Arena 130/125c. Sony CS3/CS8/CS5. QA 3020i/3090Ci, 2020i/2000c. Monolith Cinema 5bs. Polk RTiA1/CSiA4. Other Audio>Sony MDR-Z7m2, XB900n, MDR-V6, XB700, XB32, XB31, XB22. Sennheiser HD58X, HD4.50, PC37X. SIVGA SV004. HyperX Cloud PS4. TB Stealth300. LG FH6, RK8, RK7, PK5, PH4. HK Onyx Studio4(x2).

there have been plenty of customers who have called monoprice asking for help and or customer service...you end up just talking to someone who has no idea about subwoofers or audio at all. I'd buy a SVS, HSU, Rythmik ,PSA sub any day over monoprice sub...
