Dual JTR Captivator 2400ULF vs Dual Rythmik FV18

Last piece I need for my Home Theater is Subs. totally enclosed 16X18X8 (WxDxH) basement area. I am debating dual JTR Captivator 2400ULF vs dual Rythmik FV18. The Rythmiks look to be at least $1500 less when shipped. The lowest frequency is 10 vs 12hz. Movie/Music 70%/30%. Dolby Atmos setup 7.2.4. F/R revel F208s C-C208 Surround 4X W783 Atmos 4X C763L. I would appreciate any feedback.

I have listened to the Cap 2400 ULF many times and own the FV18s. That is not really a fair comparison and should likely be FV25HP versus Cap 2400. Any how you have noted the price difference. Being in a basement I would think the Cap 2400 would provide the most TR. The FV18 with paper cone is really a great performer at that price but will not deliver the low end as strongly as the Cap 2400. The FV25HP would be closer in performance with the edge in raw power to JTR. The FV25HP will have more refinement to the bass than 2400. @toddct has heard all three of these subs as well can chime in as well. Or better yet wait for the Fv28 :D

JTR has a more aggressive bass whallop compared to rythmiks more refined bass from what I have read online. some like it more, some less.

Agreed with what Ray said. And although it's not the FV18, I'm going to leave a link to my 2400 vs. fv25 write up and the Houston GTG which we did have the FV18 aluminum cone.

You can't go wrong with any of the 3, it just really depends on what you are looking for and your listening habits.

not to derail this thread completely but enrico mentioned nearly a year ago to me privately that they thought they'd be able to use larger amplifier modules in the fv28, and now i read it's going to be powered by the same amp in the fv25. larger cabinet, larger drivers, one would think you'd need a bit more horsepower.

Not necessarily if the drivers are more efficient. I think they were headed that way till an alternative on Hypex amp was not found. Brian is very meticulous about the parts that go in his subs and would not just "settle" for any alternative. Speaker power could be an alternative but they do not provide code to mod their amp to make it work for Brian.

As Ray said ‘amp is just one factor’. The FV28 will have the paper cone which is a higher sensitive driver than the Alu cone, combing it with a bigger enclosure and more or bigger ports area (important parts), you will probably get 4-5db across the whole bass spectrum over the fv25 (my guess), so 1FV28 is almost equal 2 FV25’s.

torii 09-30-2019 03:14 PM

if I turn gain up 80% -max on fv25hp amp I can max out my 15amp dedicated line for sub. so would there be enough juice in most peoples home for more power in an amp? then again most people dont boost up their gains so maybe....

Todd. It looks to me after reading the 2400ulf is the favorite. Am I reading this correctly?

jsc79 09-30-2019 03:51 PM

Where is the info on the fv28?

If that is the type of bass and sound that appeals to you then yes. As Todd said as well, these are all solid choices. Just get the one that fits with your listening habits and liking as well budget and size accommodation.

Got it. Everyone was talking with details and I felt like I missed the party. No way I could pull a pair off in my living room though. Lol

That’s kind of what I was thinking. Lol. Shnikies it’s gonna be a beast. Can’t wait to see it.

I think just looking at price and numbers in this case JTR better sub. rythmik has very clear and defined bass tho which is aesome for music. dont know if anyone in price range makes a more musical sub than rythmik.

serith 09-30-2019 06:51 PM

i've been without my trio of fv25's since december 2018, so i'm willing to wait a bit longer to see what the fv28 is capable of before making a decision between multiples of it, the tv36 or the cap4000.

I don’t think any of them will surpass the cap 4000 down low though the FV28 won’t be too terribly far off. The tv36 ipal will likely have the most mid bass. I am surprised you didn’t call out the TV42. That would be something nuts.

You're going to find mad love for both Rythmik and JTR subs. I love the FV25 and the FV18, the FV18 is my favorite sub under 2k. However, I am biased to the JTR sound and particularly the 2400. It's robust sound signature is just something that I haven't heard from other subs to date. If you've read through a lot of those threads then you'll see that people have different opinions and like different things. This is my point, we can only tell you what we like and why we like it. I suggest reading through the JTR and Rythmik threads, look up some owner reviews, read professional reviews, PM other owners and if at all possible see if there are owners of each that might be close to you and give you a demo. That way, you'll have the best information to make an informed decision. I know that may not help much; if you were like me when I started looking, I wanted someone to say "this is the best sub, buy this one". But, that's really not how it works. There's only the BEST sub for YOU. I spent a lot of time doing all this before I made a decision. Then you have nutbags like Ray who order one of every sub from every vendor before they decide. ;)

Let me ask a few questions, how loud do you listen?, do you like your bass hot?, how much TR do you like?, and what's your budget?

Hope this helps a bit. The sub comparison thread also has a lot of good info too. https://www.avsforum.com/forum/113-s...pressions.html

I was wondering what you were waiting on. ;)

Did you get a JTR demo yet?

Thought you were going the DIY route as per your last YouTube update.

Since three FV25 didn't give you what you are looking for, if you are considering PSA, I would look at the TV42 instead of the TV36.

Todd, actually it is a great help. I appreciate all the input from everyone. I have read all the links provided and they were awesome. Thanks to everyone. I think either will fulfill my needs. I last had a M&K v12 and their studio monitors for a 5.1 system. I gave it all to my son when we built the new house last year. Before that I had Cerwin Vega dual 15 paper cone that the cones rotted out. The CV was an earth shaker, for me at least. it cracked my picture window when I first installed it many years ago. I had to set output for 0 instead of the max I believe was 12. -6 to 12 seems like the range on that one. I will probably set any new ones mid-range.

i wanted to at least try my hand at diy, but ultimately it's not the right path for me. on paper it seems so easy to take a large box, stick a driver in it & throw some power behind it, but the magic just wasn't there.
