Gain match svs

I was watching a video online and it made me wonder if how I gain matched my subs was not smart.
I have an older onkyo receiver to where volume starts at 0.
I have an old school radio shack spl meter.
It's been awhile, but I set my onkyo to some random loudness that gave my meter a straight up reading at 0 on the scale. Confirmed all 7 channels were balanced.
Then went to subwoofer gain on the avr and set to 0. Then physically gain matched the subs to the main.
My thought was I know 0 and if I want to run hot or low, I remember 0 is baseline.
However the gain knobs are less than half gain.
The video I watched said he recommended running the avr gain nearly as low as possible and higher gain on physical amp.
Does this really make any difference?

If by “physical amp” you mean the subwoofer, that’s probably not a good recommendation. Most subs turn on when they sense a signal. If the signal is too low, the sub won’t come on until the signal level is high.

Really, if you’re happy with the way things sound now, then all is good.
