How much bass is enough?

New to the forum. Just getting started with a 5.1 config of BIC Americas. Center is DV-62CLRS, Front L/R are DV-64s, Surrounds are DV62si, and sub is a PL-200II. Yada yada, my main question is "For a 18x22' room, how many subs would you recommend? The one PL-200II sounds amazing, and shakes the second floor above, but I see people with much smaller rooms using two of them. Any advice is appreciated.

IMO you can never have enough infrasonic bass.

Get a Umik-1 and REW and see what is going on in your room.

Sounds like one sub might be enough.

But if you were to put, say, a pair of...
- Monoprice Monolith 10" THX Select Certified;
- SVS PB-2000 Pro; or
- HSU VTF-3 MK5 HP,
...in that room, you might conclude that the BIC isn't quite as amazing anymore.

While the BIC subs are good, (I still have my BIC F12 in the master bedroom) you're really only getting bass down to around 25Hz. There will be bass in movies and games that hits below 20Hz and you'll never know. So it's not just about adding more bass, but also trying to find if missing ULF is enough to upgrade to more expensive subs.

Don't ask, don't wonder, don't have anything to do with this part of the forum if you want to survive. Go and be happy with what you enjoy. If you stick around you'll be dropping 4x more $ than you ever imagined spending on a single sub.

My guess would be when you get back spasms because you just moved a sub for the 40th time in one day trying to find that perfect spot in the room when using your UMIK with REW.

That will be interesting, there are only so many places they can go, at some point I'll have to call it good. The REW looks more complex than I want to tackle right now but I'm going to try and learn it

The initial install and setup of REW is the most overwhelming part but it isn't too bad if you just take your time and walk through Austin Jerry's setup guide. Once you know it is working, it is super easy.

I would read his setup guide while you wait for the UMIK. It won't take too long to get through as the setup portion is pretty short compared to the taking measurements and creating graphs sections.

Regardless of room you always what a minimum of two subs, after four the room acoustic benefit get's a lot smaller but the jump from say 1 to 4 is a giant step, I mean different ball game kind of step. Once you start getting some output(let's say you got a single 18" or whatever) you will notice how important it is to have even bass. Multiple subs is the key for the bass to sound good and have an even response..once that's dialed in you'll be able to play loud.

Like others have said there is a deep rabbit hole here. If you choose to go down it you will get great sound in the end, if not just enjoy what you have and that will be great too

Now go buy an additional sub.. or three

one can only imagine.

the problem is WAF. i am still trying to deal with WAF adding another FVX15 to the mix, let alone 2 FV18’s.

i have chalked it up to a loss in life and will deal with another FVX15.

When you start to wonder where the cracks in the drywall came from, you might be nearing "enough".
When you had to add so much weatherstripping to a door that you can barely close it to stop it from rattling during REW sweeps when you can't hear anything yet, you might be nearing "enough".
When you see walls flexing, you might be nearing "enough".
When you get a back massage in a concrete floored, concrete walled room, you might be nearing "enough".
When your ears have popped like they do on an airplane taking off from listening to the organ symphony #3 , you might be nearing "enough".
When you stop straightening pictures and mirrors anywhere in the house because they don't stay put, you might be nearing "enough".

The above are all my experiences with what I consider to be nearly enough bass.

How much bass is enough? For me it's this much.. at least most of the time. I spent 2 weeks here and decided to upgrade my 12" Klipsch sub to a dual 21" monster. Any questions?
