Minidsp for subs

Okay, I've been trying to find the answer on AVS but can't seem to find it. I recently bought a couple of minidsp 2x4s. I wasn't paying attention, thinking they were Minidasp 2x4hd. In any case, I'm trying to figure out if I need to go through the hassle of returning them, get a refund, and go after the HD version. My plan is to use one for my 4 acoustechs (2 H-100IIs and 2 pl-200s) in my living room and the other for my 2 HSU VTF-2 MK5 in my dedicated theater.

Will the standard model work well, or do I need to return them and get the HD version.

Thanks for any advice.

What is the largest difference in distance to the MLP you "might" have in your rooms? The biggest shortcoming of the 2x4 nonHD version it can only delay a sub up to 7ms. If I remember right, this means if you think you might have a sub more than 7' further away then another sub in the same room, the nonHD might not work for you.

Well in my living room I have 2 4 feet away from mlp on either side and the other 2 are 9.5 feet away on either side. And in my Theater I have 1 10 feet away and the other 7 feet away.

Then the next thing to look at is the voltage clipping issue. What voltage does your AVR use for its sub output?

I don't know. In my living room, I'm using a Marantz SR 6012 and in my theater, I'm using a Marantz AVR 7705.

I think if you want to run the subs hot you might be at risk of clipping. You might research that a bit more.

I understand your situation as the HD version is more than double the cost. It is a much better unit, though. You will likely have a lower stress level if you can return the non-HD.

Yeah, I decided to return the 2 standard version. I was just wanted to get to messing around with it. I have a lot to figure out. As I side note. my living room receiver is a 6013 not 6012. I don't know why I typed that.

Get the 2x4 HD. You also get 10 x PEQs per input/output instead of 5 on the non HD. Also, the miniDSP 2x4 HD can be upgraded to DDRC-24 with Dirac Live. The HD can be connected to the miniDSP wi-DG and be controlled via WiFi, the non HD can’t do that.

The turn around is actually very quick considering how far they are. They use DSL and once shipped, it comes into the states in a day or two, add another 2-3 once in-country and you're are plugging it in. That is unless there are unforeseeable setbacks such as being out of part of something you ordered. I ran into that, but it still wasn't bad. The wait time for shipment is around 6 business days.

They have several north american distributors listed on their site. I have found that you can end up saving a bit in taxes and shipping by trying some of the distributors instead of buying directly from MiniDSP.

Thanks for the responses, every US distributor looks to be sold out of the umik 1 microphone, but the direct site said they had them in stock

^ +1 to DCA. Also check Cross Spectrum Labs if you haven't already.

EDIT: I dont see the HD version on the CSL website, but you might want to send them an email to double check. The site appears a bit neglected.

The WI DG is also convenient(not necessary, although it is a must have for me out of convenience ). You can download a remote app on your phone and toggle through your configurations. You can also load sub eq files, BEQ files through your laptop wirelessly.

I use config one with a house curve for most of my listening, config 2 without curve for nighttime when kids are down, config 3 for BEQ, and config 4 empty and for experimenting with different eq. The widg makes it really easy to switch between those.

One note- the widg can be a bit flakey and disconnect with Windows pc’s. It’s annoying but the convenience far outweighed this minor nuisance.
