Seems like this is the sub to go with at that range. Those that are a bit cheaper are 10"s, and 12's from competing companies are much more.

Would those that have experience with this sub recommend it? It would be replacing dual RW-10's. In a fairly large room, 20'x25' open concept.

Would like to get a second down the road but for now $600 is my limit.
20x25' open concept is quite a bit of room to pressurize. Honestly, if you are running two RW-10's in your room currently and you're looking to get more output across the board, my personal recommendation would be to save up to go with a 15" sub instead of the 12". The RW-10 is a 10" with a 260w RMS amp, and a rear firing port, so I'm assuming it may be somewhat similar to the VTF-1 Mk3. So two of those subs would likely be pretty similar to the VTF-2 Mk5.

I would initially go with two ports open, EQ 2, Q.3 if you like loud punchy bass.

Hmmm. That's not what I wanted to hear. You are right about the wattage but my subs are front ported. Not sure what that matters.

I don't really have the 1k or more that 15" costs. That's beyond what I can spend for a sub. Thanks for the feedback.

If you could swing the VTF3 mk5 right now, you could always add a second one later down the road when you can afford it.

Not a problem. I know that's a bit more than what you were intending to spend. I'd rather you have a better idea as to what to expect when going from one sub to another. Would hate for you to get a sub and it not meet expectations.

Thanks Kevin I didn't realize it was the rep responding. I appreciate you being up front about that and not just pushing for a sale regardless. I am in the saving period right now so just trying to figure out the best option.

I officially joined the Hsu club yesterday! I have two questions: I bought a VTF3-MK5 yesterday to replace a Polk PSW505. I don't really know what to do with the PSW505 and was wondering if it makes sense to run it along side the VTF3-MK5 until I find somewhere to put it? I am going to be installing the new sub today, excited to check it out.
Second question, I was reading the fine print on the demo disc and track one apparently hits really low and can damage speakers. I have KEF R3 fronts, R2C center and R 300 rears. Can that handle the low or should I skip that track?

Congrats on your new toy. Now don't punish the VTF-3 by making it play along side the PSW505...

The difference in capability between them will be quite vast, with the Polk dragging down the HSU. I would suggest you only run the new sub and perhaps relegate the 505 to duty somewhere else.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite.

BTW, did you really need to quote the entire post?

That's sort of what I was thinking. I will have to come up with solution for the 505, maybe I will build a water proof enclosure and use it outside. Thank you for your feedback!

Just joined the club yesterday with a pair of vtf 3’s. Lotta fun unboxing and setting up. Those things make noises that made me jump out of my seat. Anyway, starting out with one port plugged EQ2, Q .5. Not sure what difference, if any, the two different size ports make. Should one be plugged over the other?

Did you read the instruction manual? It has the various ways of using the ports and what results to expect from each configuration. I imagine with two subs you can have both set a bit differently to get the best the subs have to offer. I am new to the Hsu sub world and am planning on playing around with it this weekend.

Not a manual reader?

The manual (p. 5) lists a number of tuning setups. Normally, if you're going to have 1 port open, it would be the larger (4") one. I don't know how much of a difference it makes, and I haven't experimented.

There is one warning: "NOTE: Never operate the subwoofer with 2 ports open and operating mode switch set to ‘EQ1’, as this may damage the driver and void the warranty."

That's the only forbidden setting combination.

Personally, I've stayed with having the 3" port plugged, EQ1, and Q = 0.7.

I guess you guys don't know either. It's cool though, i can google the answer. I just thought some people would know here or have some experience with one over the other.

It's not that they don't know... they do.... you need to read your manual ... .make a decision on what type of sound you are looking for and then start with those recommended settings in the manual and go from there... No one can give you an exact answer that you appear to be looking for.....as everyone's bass preferences and rooms are totally different.

Yeah, these subs are amazing and if you are local to Anaheim (714 area code?) I highly recommend stopping by their showroom. Be sure to email or call for availability. Kevin helped me the other day and was extremely informative.

I'm with JimWilson on that. You can certainly try it, but it is possible that the 505 may end up bottlenecking how loud you can play. With the VTF-3 Mk5 HP, you don't need to skip the track. I would use caution if running it with the VTF-1 Mk3 though as it has quite a bit of 16 Hz material in it. As long as you have the KEF's set to small and crossover with the sub (80 Hz is typical), then you don't need to worry about the track affecting your mains.

Haha! Glad to hear that you received the VTF-3 Mk5 HP's safely. As a general rule of thumb, the larger port will be able to move more air and give you less port noise and compression than the smaller port. They are both tuned, somewhat similarly, slightly lower with the 3" port. So I would go with the 4" port open for the cleaner headroom there, but you can certainly try the 3" port open and the 4" port closed as well. No harm in doing so.

Ha. It’s no joke about getting them safely. I had them shipped to a Walmart/Fedex location bc I had to work and couldn’t be home to sign. Getting it to the car and then out of the car into the basement was quite the show. But thanks for answering, that was exactly the info I was looking for. Very much appreciated! Really looking forward to seeing what these can do over the next few weeks.

@whiteboy714

I know we've talked about Klipsch subs based upon price and our love of Klipsch. I have the vtf-3 MK5 and it fricken kills the r115sw. The HSU vtf-3 in tests is approx 3-6 db louder than the r115sw in ALL Hz.

The Vtf-2 MK5 has about the same output as the R115sw. 2 of the vtf-2 will be real nice. Better than 2 115's.

Look at the Klipsch under 2m stats and compare these independent tests:

Vtf-2 MK5

Vtf-3 MK5

I know we've talked about Klipsch subs based upon price and our love of Klipsch. I have the vtf-3 MK5 and it fricken kills the r115sw. The HSU vtf-3 in tests is approx 3-6 db louder than the r115sw in ALL Hz.

The Vtf-2 MK5 has about the same output as the R115sw. 2 of the vtf-2 will be real nice. Better than 2 115's.

Thanks man, yeah I was comparing the Klipsch to the VTF-2, because these days price wise thats where it lines up. The only thing that might draw me away from HSU to the 115 is crazy deals on Bstock parts. But I am worried about the short warranty.

TCL 65R625 -- Denon X3500h -- Klipsch RP600m -- RP450C -- Ascend HTM 200 SE -- Dual Klipsch RW-10

What are you guys running on your subs, max extension or max output? I have the VT2-MK4.

For me in my room, I went with max extension since I found max output got a bit boomy. The max extension gave me the low rumble shake I was looking for.

Tried max extension for a while and enjoyed it with q-.5. Now trying max output and the couch is shaking more than before. My dog is not liking max ouput as her bed is next to the ports...lol.

Love being able to adjust and play with the sound.

Wow, that's interesting how you both like one over the other. I guess it's all personal preference. I was using max output at my old house, but now that I have a dedicated movie room, I think I'll try max extension. What are all the exact settings for max extension?

I liked max ext too... just trying something different.

Max ext 3" port sealed eq1
Max out both open eq2

These dang subs sooo adjustable... it's just fun to play around and hear/ feel the differences.

How about all those other settings? What should they be set to for max extension?
