External hard drive recommendation needed

My daughter is looking for an external hard drive for her Mac laptop. What brand/models do you recommend for $100 or less?

Thanks.

Jim, almost all external desktop and portable drives these days can easily be reformatted to work with her Mac, but if you shared a little more, like which model laptop she has and how she plans to use the drive, that might help us be more helpful...

Thanks. It's a MacBook Pro. She wants to back up photos, documents, and music.

What do you guys think of the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB? It's highly rated and popular.

That's a perfect choice for a portable, it usually has the Samsung Spinpoint M9T inside which is a great drive. (Many folks buy that external just to pop the drive out...)

Well... I think Western Digital made a specific Mac version of their My Passport external drives, if I'm not mistaken. AFAIK, those can be had rather inexpensively.

Living Room: Samsung UN46A750 46" ToC 1080p, Yamaha HTC-6160 AV Receiver, JBL Cinema 480 5.1 Speakers, Magnavox HDD/DVD Recorder, Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD.
Master Bedroom: Sony KDL-55W950B 55" 1080p, Sony HT-XT1 Soundbar, Xbox One, Scientific Atlanta 8300HD
Basement: Toshiba 32TL515U 32" 1080p 3DTV, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Bose Companion II Series 2 2.1 Speakers, Panasonic DMR-EZ28 DVD Recorder

Any more info on why they do this?

why they do what, pop the drive out of an enclosure? because it's much cheaper that way than buying the bare drive by itself...why Seagate doesn't offer the bare drive more widely or at a decent price is probably due to marketing or warranty...

There is nothing special about mac special version. In fact, they probably make more money on that. I would just reformat it as HFS+ as soon as I buy a new HDD.
