Plex on Mac Mini - HD playback stutters

I've found that video playback of HD titles using Plex on a late-2014 Mac Mini stutters rather frequently.

I'm talking about picture only...I've never noticed any corresponding audio stutter. It seems to only be a frame or two at a time that stutters/freezes/catches-up...but it's quite noticeable.

Are there any settings I can tweak to fix this?

My 2007 Sony KDL-52W3000 TV is connected to the Mac Mini via HDMI for Plex playback.

The Mac Mini is a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8 GB RAM.

M4V-encoded video files are stored on a USB 3.0-attached 2GB HDD.

Plex Server is Version 1.0.3.2461-35f0caa.
Plex Home Theater is Version 1.4.1.469-47a90f01

Thanks!

I've not had any problems with playback of .MKV files on my Mac Mini, which I think is older than yours. I'm using Kodi for playback.

When I had video stuttering on my 2011 mini, it was usually related to an audio setting. IIRC on those older versions of PHT, there was a "sync video to audio" option in the advanced settings that affected stuttering. You could also try moving over to OpenPHT since PHT has been replaced by Plex Media Player through Plex Pass.

Thanks...I'll check the "sync video to audio" setting.

And I'll also check out OpenPHT.

I have the same Mac Mini as yours connected to my 1080p projector through HDMI and I play several high quality MKV files including those that have 5.1 channel FLAC for lossless PCM conversion through HDMI (The HDMI goes to my receiver first for audio extraction). I have never had issues. Make sure it is not your HDD by transferring some movies to the internal HDD and trying that out. May be your HDD is slow and glitches.

Nah, external HDD is fast and connected via USB 3.0.

Switching to OpenPHT solved the problem, whatever it was. No more dropped/skipped frame glitches.

Thanks for the suggestion, @12B4A !

Good to hear you got it worked out. FWIW, I had frame stuttering issues recently for 24fps output and could not get it nailed down. I gave in and bought a Plex Pass to use the latest Plex Media Player. So far it's been flawless playback. If a Plex Media Server update decides to break things again, PlexPass may be the nuclear option if OpenPHT doesn't resolve things.
