Woohoo! Thanks, pulled the trigger. Tracking says it's on its way .. ETA Monday 03/11 ..

FWIW - could've bought a Denon AVR-X4500H for somewhat less (nearby Frys); but .. long term reliability of Yamaha receivers is stellar. Denon? Not so much; feature full, but barely beats out Onkyo for MTBF.

Seems this is a A2080 clone?...minus the better warranty and the fifth foot

If so this is a great deal

Rumor has it that, although lacking a fifth foot, it retains the threaded socket for it ... confirmed - base plate accepts the foot from the RX_A2040.

Took awhile to track this down; receiver doesn't ship with a full users manual, and Yamaha support doesn't link to one. Functionality matches the RX-A2080 (that manual is accurate), but if you're OCD, a RX-V2085 PDF: https://au.yamaha.com/files/download...om_A_En_B0.pdf

Costco's Yamaha TSR-7850 (seems between an RX-V685 and RX-A780) also apparently has the same cabinet as a 780, same faceplate (except for model # printing), removable power cord, similar power specs, and a threaded hole where the Aventage fifth foot would go. This doesn't make it a "stealth Aventage" necessarily, but confirms some superficial sharing of parts. Not surprising to me if the RX-V2085 shares similarities with a higher end RX-A model.

It is a A2080 from what I can tell, two year warranty AFAIK. When I bought the A2070 this one wasn't yet out, or at least I hadn't seen it on the market. The Aventage may not be worth it for that extra year. Yamaha builds their down-line AVRs every bit as good as the Aventage line IMO. I haven't had one die on me yet.

I was a long time HK fan, went to Onkyo when HK started turning out crap, then on to Onkyo. Took me 4 'lessons' to get Onkyo out of my system, four dead HDMI boards in a row, 3 AVRs and one AVP, an Integra DHC 40.1. I bought a Yamaha HTR-7065 after selling the Integra (had it repaired under warranty) that a nephew talked me out of, which still works great today. The A2070 works great, it replaced a CX-A5000 AVP. Got tired of cabling with separates, and rack space was crowded. I have an HTR-7810 in the bedroom 2.1 setup and it also works great. I like the Audyssey XT32 that Denon puts in their 3500 and up AVRs, but I like Yamaha for their attention to build quality.

If you compare the specs, weight, and cabinet dimensions, they are comparable. They are both getting eARC support via firmware at a TBD date. The RX-V2085 seems to ship with MusicCast support, though the RX-A2080 requires a firmware update. AND ... the 2085 only has an FM tuner, while the 2080 has AM and FM. Warranty will differ of course.

But I caution anyone from saying "the 2085 is an 2080." I doubt that very much. Comparable, yes; identical, possibly but unlikely. ;)

Interesting, my 2085 has AM although I've never bothered to try it, I guess specs (even Yamaha's) aren't always exact. I think I'll hook up the supplied AM antenna just to verify.

Edit: AM works fine although I'll probably never use it.

Congrats, you found an Easter egg! If you also received a manual (which isn't available online for download), send the back cover page, and the cover flap of your AVR's box with the UPC, in for a bonus Yamaha RX-V tee shirt. (I'm kidding.)

Here's the 2085/3085 online manual https://manual.yamaha.com/av/18/rxv3085/en/#/

Thanks for that. Posted into the “Official Yamaha RX-V*85 owners” thread. I hope this isn’t the future, having online-only manuals with no PDF download. :-\

It's a pain to find, but the PDF manual for the aussie variant of the RX-V2085 can be downloaded: https://au.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/4/1206424/web_AV17-0235_RX-V3085_2085_om_A_En_B0.pdf

Posted it earlier in the thread via an edit, but I guess the info failed to propagate. My bad.

ChromeJob 03-21-2019 08:04 PM

Outstanding. You, sir, deserve a cupcake, with icing.

turnne1 03-22-2019 05:33 AM

I suspect this is truly a A2080 clone
Economies of scale would probably prohibit Yamaha from making too many changes between the models

It seems like the days when they has RX-V models in the specialty stores and a clone HTR model for the E commerce outlets

So bottom line...perhaps one year less warranty and the loss of the 5th foot are the differences?

"Join us at the AVR-model roulette table! Place your bets, everyone a winner. Round and round the ball goes, where she lands nobody knows!"

Sorry, but the suspicions, skepticism, conjecture, uncorroborated claims -- they're all on equal ground here until someone actually opens up a couple of AVRs and compares the parts numbers of internal components. Pick who you want to believe, and place your bets. Either way, you're likely getting a great AVR, but the boasting rights to "Woohoo, I got an RX-A clone for hundreds of dollars less" is a matter of belief.

Captain Obvious, signing off. {click}

Looks like a "poor cousin" to the A780. Will pick one up tonight, for $399 vs. $649 in AMZN. Unlike the A1070/1080, this lowly AVR would fit into my current cabinet due to the depth. It has one year less warranty than its Advantage brethren.

One year less, but if u use a Costco Visa card, u snag the 2 (Costco concierge) + 2 (Citi extended) warranty extension. Definite win, & superlative customer service.

A refurb with 18 months of warranty is the same price; can't complain. Will set up this weekend, comparing to my 11 years old Onkyo SR705 w/ only 3 HDMI inputs. My friend got another Onkyo but had problem with HDMI, so I'm trying something new. The Marantz SR7012 went crowbar at 50% volume, very disappointing.

BTW, Costco also carries the 7810 at the same price, no discount.

If the SR7012 crowbarred, u may have impedance issues.

It was set up in Best Buy Magnolia outfit.

Slickdeals says the deal is back - $799 shipped.

scotthal 05-19-2019 12:19 PM

The deal is back - Adorama has the Yamaha RX-V2085 Ultra HD 4K 9.2-Channel Network AV Receiver with Dolby Atmos and MusicCast (2018 model) for $1400 - $600 off with coupon code MEMORIAL at checkout = $800 with free shipping. Functionally equivalent to the RX-A2080, but has a shorter warranty & lacks the 'fifth foot'.

I couldn’t get the Denon 4500h deal, is this a good substitute? I picked up a Denon 3500h for $529 but really want the 9.1/7.1.2. I can still return the Denon. Thoughts?

Biased opinion - I consider 'em comparable; bought the RX-V2085 despite having EZ access to the Frys deal on the Denon (store is ~20 minutes drive). Adorama deal on the RX-V2085 is still active ($799 shipped, as of 05/26).

Thanks. I ended up getting Bestbuy to price match and went with the 4500h because I liked the 3500h so much. Will end up keeping the 3500h also to go into my other room.

scotthal 07-07-2019 09:10 PM

It's back on sale - $800 shipped. Adorama, promo code "SUMMERFUN". And gone again - the sale appears to have ended at midnight (EST).

If you go to the online manual link stated above, click the cog at the bottom right, then choose PDF download. Save and you got your US (I think) manual.
