Buying projector (JVS NX5) from Amazon seller

I've never purchased projectors before. The JVC NX5 available for $5000 from Hatchfields Co. on Amazon. It's not authorized dealer. Upon inquiry the seller replied the following:

This projector is brand new USA version.
We offer a 30 day return/exchange policy and cover this projector for 1 year through our store.

Is it safe practice to buy from such sellers?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I found this one for 4550 before taxes and shipping, but I was wondering the same thing about warranty. I don't understand the whole warranty is void if bought online policy.

With an investment like that, I would be hesitant to buy from anywhere but an authorized dealer.

Absolutely not... ESPECIALLY with Hatchfields who is specifically unauthorized by JVC and whom they are legally cracking down upon. Any Amazon, eBay or other website that allows you to add the item to the shopping cart is not an authorized dealer.
Per JVC's website:

JVC projectors are occasionally sold by online retailers who are not authorized to sell JVC products. You should be aware that the products these unauthorized retailers sell:

May be refurbished rather than new;
Might not include all accessories;
Might not include a valid United States warranty;
Could be models not meant for sale in the United States.
For these reasons, you should make sure to purchase products only from a JVC authorized Procision retailer.

Now, there are websites that will have the JVC projectors listed on them, but will have a button such as "Contact Us" which is in accordance with JVC's online sale policy and are authorized dealers so you will get full warranty and service.

Feel free to PM if interested in some suggested authorized websites/dealers that I am happy to share with you.

I'm in Seattle area and I only found BestBuy as authorized JVC dealer. I'd like to check authorized websites/dealers for more options. Will appreciate if you can share. (I can't PM yet as a newbie )

That website is another company specifically on the un-authorized list of many manufacturers. I've been told that they ship refurbished units as new and do not buy directly from the manufacturers

I know that this list is from Optoma specifically, but I would suggest staying away from any dealer/website on here for any brand if you want to be sure that you are receiving new, a-stock, intended for US sale, full manufacturer's warranty, etc:

There are vendors on this site that offer excellent deals on JVCs, got mine from one of them.

Who did you use? I just don't understand why using an online retailer is so bad for JVC?

How convenient. The only legit places to buy happen to also be ones that make it very difficult to do price comparisons between.

Exactly. I tried calling 3 different authorized vendors here in town. No answer at any of them. Then I contacted them with emails and the only one to respond only sells Sony projectors...

It's very hard for me to understand JVC's sales strategy. It seems they intentionally makes it hard for people to buy their products. I wonder how many sales they've lost because of this.

The great problem in home cinema - the dealer structure.

Manufacturers able to produce the items for around 50% of the cost to consumer, but unable to make this transparent as the dealers need to make their cut.

Hence no price discussion allowed on here, and companies like JVC not allowing prices to be displayed (or very high sales prices which every dealer can offer significant discounts on).

To find real prices for anything you have to ask around with at least a few dealers.

Now if its used masquerading as new thats a problem but is usually obvious and returnable. Warranty 1 year instead of 3 years not so good either. But hey, COVID hurt my income badly and my projector just broke so I cant throw money around too much. I cant help it too much if authorized brick and mortar has high overhead and typically high prices, but curious how much extra I would have to pay.

Funny enough I will also be in the market for a NX5 and so far no dealer has gotten back to me. If anyone knows of one, I am in the New England area. Thanks!

Truly...first world problems right here, folks!
Step 1. Proclaim "Covid hurt my income badly"
Step 2. Go into debt buying $4K projector from unauthorized dealer!

I was about to say.

If the projector broke...maybe do without for a few weeks or a month? It won't kill you. And you'll probably get a better deal/warranty/everything else by being patient?

Just a thought.

Not sure why this seems to be so hard for people. Usually a little reading in the pj forums will find you the sellers you need to call. I believe AVScience is the largest seller of JVC pjs, but there are other sellers out there.

Someone mentioned used being sold as new. If you are referring to b-stock, then Mike Garrett wrote up a post somewhere explaining the difference. When available they are an excellent deal.

Having fun playing the new mobile game Volley Village

It's a pricing and marketing model born out of a different time when shopping was done in dealer's showrooms and not online. The manufacturers and the dealers needed each other and price shopping for the consumer was nearly impossible.

It's a double-edged sword. As consumers we want good products, good warranties, and good service ALL for the cheapest price. So much so that we will demo in a showroom but buy online because we can get it for 5% less.

The old dealer model, although expensive and non-transparent delivered on the 3 "goods" above. If JVC decided to drive prices down, they would start selling directly to the consumer at the lowest possible price. Before you know it, Sony would follow suit and a race to the bottom begins. Quality would suffer because JVC would be incentivised to use cheaper parts to cut costs as far as they could because the focus would be entirely on cost to the consumer.

This would leave dealers and the service they provide out. Suddenly they start charging more for their services because they're not part of the hardware sale. That, or they refuse to service JVC or other customer-purchased gear.

So, although the model is weird by today's standards, it's protectionist, and kind of sucks at least you know you're getting a quality product. I think that's more important for a $5,000+ projector purchase than saving a couple hundred bucks.

That's my humble opinion.

Many of these Amazon sellers are really just legitimate dealers operating under a fake name. They know that they are breaking the terms of their dealer agreement, but can't pass up the easy money. This is why full warranties aren't offered.
