Panasonic DP-UB820 and DP-UB420 players on sale - HDR sliders for projectors

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/149-b...ble.html?amp=1

Within the last year or so, Panasonic seems to have re-released the premier DP-UB820 4k bluray player in a cheaper package. You give up analogue outputs and Dolby Vision, but keep everything else and the MSRP is half. This is of benefit to the projector users in our community or TVs that don't have the capability to run full HDR brightness levels, but want to keep the BR2020 color space. The upscaler for 1080p BluRay to 4K is considered about as good as it gets as well.

Best Buy has it on sale right now for $190. Which is $60 off.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/panason...?skuId=6361757

and Amazon price matched:

The DP-UB820 is $400 on sale as well which is $100 off.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/panason...?skuId=6278202

Amazon price matched there too:

This is the cheapest these units have been according to camelcamelcamel price tracker.

Yes, thanks for the heads up. I too saw that pop up yesterday and tried to call BestBuy for a price match. They wouldn't do it - because they don't apparently match BF through CM sales. So I rebought, and I'll return the new unopened unit with the original receipt $190 receipt.

Somebody said you could combine a $20 google checkout coupon with the $150 price to get it for $130, but I don't think I'll buy it a third time.

$130 for that player is a definite - must buy price.

Can someone please explain how to get/use the $20 google checkout coupon?

Also, we are still living in the "dark" ages (1080p projector without HDR)
Will the DB-UB420 do a superior upconversion of DVDs? How is the speed loading Blu-rays ?
How about using the HDR slider on sources other than discs (like Netflix stream)? Is that possible?
This is probably not the right Forum for this discussion. Can someone link me to the answers?

Thanks and Happy Holidays to everyone in the AVS family

Use this link to use Google Shopping. I think the promo code only works with first time Google Shopping shoppers. Not sure.

I ordered one as well.
+1 on the "Thank You".
I've been using the LG UBK90. It works well, but I have yet to use the DV...
The Panasonic seems like a more refined product.
Does anyone know the BB return deadline for products purchased durring the holiday season?

Cautionary post

I bought this 420 player and may have a bad sample, but I’m not very impressed so far.

I’m curious as to some of you other recent buyer’s thoughts/experiences.

I received mine yesterday. It powers on and stays on for about 40 seconds and shuts of. Returned to Best Buy for credit and reordered from google shopping for same price. Super frustrating that we have to be Customer service agent’s with all the defective merchandise being shoved onto the market. It looked ok but I really could not tweak it with the limited viewing. I don’t think my 203 is going anywhere soon.

Any more opinions on the UB420?
I just received one via the Google buy link. It says that it came through Best Buy.
After reading the recent posts about problems, I'm wondering what to do if I need to return it. It's not showing up as an order under my Best Buy account. In fact, it came in a plain cardboard box with no interior documentation or invoice.
Usually Best Buy is excellent about returns. Do I take it back to the store and show them the online order receipt?
Thanks

I posted this in the Disc Player Forum, but thought I would try here too.
I got a UB-420 to try out. However, there must be something that I'm missing...
We have had an LG UBK90 Ultra 4K player for about a year. It works flawlessly with our 1080p front projector. I have a few 4K discs and they all play (Atmos) and display (in 1080p) fine.
However, when I switched out to the new Panasonic UB-420, it would not play the 4K discs on our system. I tried tweaking the various settings for HDMI and video, but still nothing...The UB-420 plays ordinary Blu-rays and DVDs just fine. Just not the Ultra discs. I was looking forward to playing around with the HDR optimizer slider. As I understand it, the UB-420 should down rez the 4K discs (that have HDR) and allow the HDR to be displayed in 1080p. Clearly I'm not understanding the big picture here (HT humor).
Can anyone set me straight?
Thanks

I'd got UB420 before BF and like you I still had 1080p display DLP and it works fine playing UHD 4k disc. I didnt changed any setting on the player.

OK, Thanks. But can you use the HDR-->SDR conversion feature and "HDR Optimizer"?
