Yes, Linker is better choice, it has scalling capability also, for example to input 1080p24 to Linker and get 2160p24 to output etc.

Meter-Add-On for CalMAN Home Enthusiast

Hi,
Maybe the following info is also interesting for other Enthusiast users:
Meanwhile, there is also a meter-add-on for CalMAN Home Enthusiast, which allows the use of the sensors K-10A, CR100 and Topcon BM7A.
The cost for this meter-add-on is 499$.
The meter-add-on is not advertised strongly.
Interested parties should ask directly for the sale of Spectracal.

Peter

About DV calibration for LG 2017 OLED, for what peak output are you calibrating for in Cinema mode (what setting of OLED Light/Contrast required to have) the Grayscale with 2.2 Gamma target?

In DVmode the Contrast and OLED Light should be at their DV defaults which is as bright as the panel can go (@ D65)

Is there any way to use Calman internal patterns or patterns via madTPG for HDR calibration without the linker? I know i can use Masicolas patterns via USB, but they need to be used in a manual process. I have a fully HDR compatible video chain from my HTPC to TV. Just seems silly that i would need to purchase an additional piece of hardware just to calibrate HDR in an automated (reading series etc) manner.

If you can switch your display manually to HDR, there is no need for the Linker/Integral during calibration. I use MadTPG with Calman to calibrate my JVC rs500, it works fine. I only use Masciola's USB patterns to set the levels using the bbi/boo options of Arve's curve. I do have an Integral and a Linker for other purposes, but I don't use them for calibration. My GPU isn't even HDR compatible, it doesn't make any difference as long as you select the correct gamma/gamut options in Calman (and the correct gamma/gamut options in the display). You don't even need to be in 4K, 1080p patterns work fine too.

So Robert at VE let me work on one of the C7s in the showroom today to try the DV calibration. You need to have firmware 3.60.09 which is only available by the sets update feature since it's not on the LG web site. Tyler, I did exactly what you suggested and just left everything at the DV Cinema default. Overall, the way I understand everything, when you run the Calman DV Custom workflow it puts the TV's Dolby Vision engine into pass-though mode via special Dolby Vision "Relative Mode" metadata as per the instructions. That allows access to the 2 and 20 pt gray scale controls. When I ran the 20 pt after the 2 pt., the lower IRE's were targeting close to 2.4 gamma up to about 35-40% then the curve settled down closer to the 2.2 target. I'm not sure if this is the way it's supposed to be since I was expecting everything to be very close to 2.2 and only have to make a couple of adjustments which was not the case. Because you are dealing with very high luminance levels, it is very tedious to get the 20 pt. flat. I did the best I could but there is a small bug in the calman interface to the Murideo where the pattern button doesn't work in DV mode and sometimes when taking continuous readings, the DV metadata would "disappear" and the LG would loose sync and the screen would go black. I reported this to the Murideo folks this afternoon. Once I got the 20 pt reasonable, and everything as close to D65 as possible with gamma 2.2 as per the workflow instructions, I ran the program in the workflow that creates the "special file" and copies it to a thumb drive. It essentially runs white and all the CMS colors, similar to when you profile your meter with a couple of additional measurements. I was then able to connect the thumb drive to the LG, run DV content, and a message asked me if I wanted to update the DV settings which I did and it loaded just fine. I then did the final step of running the last DV HDR layout in the workflow to verify the work and the grayscale was pretty flat and it tracked fairly well to the 2084 EOTF curve just like you would see when calibrating in HDR10 mode. Now all this said I needed to see how good or bad the calibration was with real content so I ran the same Netflix content on another un-calibrated C7 in the showroom and the set I calibrated, which were fairly close together, with the same firmware, both in DV Cinema mode, all the user settings the same, at default, except for the 2 and 20 pt settings on the calibrated set. The result was that I immediately saw that the skin tones on the DV calibrated set were more accurate, the overall "balance" of the picture was better and i could easily see more shadow details as well. I didn't have a lot of time to try and evaluate specular highlights, etc, but you could easily see that the DV calibration seemed to improve the PQ overall. As I stated, I was expecting the 20 pt to be pretty close the way it is when you calibrate HDR10 but on the set I worked on, it wasn't and it takes a while to do the full 20 pt at these high luminance levels. Overall, interesting process and it works but I wished it was less work and quicker to execute.

Hope this experience helps.

I know it's crazy and you forgot about HLG. I'm going to bring my sleeping bag with me lol. There is a workflow for that too but there is a problem generating the patterns so we can't calibrate that yet.

Tyler, 2 questions:
1) When I tried to calibrate HLG using the last beta, the Murideo wasn't sending out the correct metadata even though it was set properly in Calman so the set never goes into HDR mode. Has that been fixed?
2) With the new Dolby Vision calibration, how do you revert back to the default? Also if you want to re-calibrate at a later date, if your run through the workflow again will the LG take the file update a 2nd time?

AutoCal Capable Brands

Is it known what TV brands, other than Samsung and Panasonic, will be AutoCal capable in the near future ?

I renewed my CalMAN Enthusiast license end of last year. It didn't come with the username and password some mention here, just the old license key format that includes the email address IIRC.

Do I need to request a username and password for the new license portal thing? And to get the latest release version installed do I need to deactivate my existing version or follow any other special steps? I haven't used the software in at least 6 months so I just want to make sure I have everything I need given the many recent changes.

That honestly depends entirely on which brands are willing to expose their display internal controls to CalMAN, and the agreements they reach with SpectraCal/Portrait Displays. And such agreements are usually under NDI until things are set up.

Design mode is now disabled for enthusiast by default.

However if any home user that wants it, will be given a design mode add-on license.

Email support at spectracal.com and we will get you a design mode add on license.

However if any home user that wants it, will be given a design mode add-on license.

Email support at spectracal.com and we will get you a design mode add on license.
Why? You guys are just taking things away and now we have to contact you guys to add features back on..... So messy.

Design mode was only in enthusiast and ultimate ($3,000), it's not included in studio or video pro ($1595)

Some people were abusing this fact and using enthusiast for professional purposes. We will give a free design mode add on to any actual home user that requests it.

I just wanted to give you some background on why the decision was made. It may be a slight inconvenience, which we are sorry for, but it was a necessary change.

Thanks Tyler, I understand on the business side that it makes sense. While doing a broad shutoff is easier than vetting thru accounts, it can be more difficult on the customers and it should not. Customers first.....

Thank again for explaining.
