So my concern is that supposedly there is a difference in output levels between the USB port and Blu-rays on the 820.

As it turns out, the 820 can read .mkv files from a burnt disc but not .mp4 or .ts.

So I solved the problem by doing a lossless conversion with ffmpeg from .mp4 to .mkv. Burnt a disc and, voila, it works. Only issue is all the filenames are truncated to 8 characters. I will have to see if there is an ImgBurn setting that can remedy this.
