Thanks...what gama setting are you using in your adjustments? Don't think you listed it, or if you did I missed it.

THANKS

I don’t have any. I just thought when you had nailed down your final settings you could put them all in a single post. Thanks again.

Hi Cwick. I have gamma 2.2 selected. Don't know if it matters with HDR10 however, since Rec2020 uses the PQ curve and not a flat gamma. Maybe someone with more knowledge can explain.

Ok, but I recommend adjusting WB first, for best results.

Stick with 2.2. 2.4 is too dark and 2.0 is too bright in the mid-tones. You can see where 2.0 (the blue dotted line) falls below the target curve (the solid blue line). Above the target curve the picture is darker; below it's brighter.

You want something like this after adjustments are made....

Lightbulb Service Menu

I was able to get into the Service menu using the following (found elsewhere on the net):

Home>Setting>System>About>OK

While info is displayed, use the remote and press the following sequence:
Up, Right, Down, Right, Up
Press the Fast Forward button 3 times
Press the Rewind button 2 times
Once a white box is displayed in the lower left corner, Press the Back Arrow. this should bring you into the factory menu.

I'm not sure if this gives any advantage over the user settings, but it is an option.

Tried your settings, watched a Tivo OTA recorded PBS Victoria. No good, a lot of graying in dark scenes and also pixelation which is the first I have seen. Going back to the rtings settings. But worth a try!!

I keep it at warm. It's the most accurate. If you calibrate in cool or normal mode, you may not have enough range to make adjustments.

You found the Gain and Offset controls, or what we call the 2-point white balance adjustment. This may be very useful.

Are you able to cycle through the HDMI inputs in the menu? AND if so, are the values different from those in HDMI 1?

Welcome to the forum!!!

Just took a peek at the WB controls in the hidden menu. For HDMI 1 input, Normal mode shows one value (+128) for each RGB component; the gain and offset for Warm and Cool all show zero.

Will check how the menu works...if it stays open while displaying test patterns.

I opened the factory menu and made adjustments to the white balance. The problem with the onscreen display is that it stays open and it's big, and it's also quite bright. However, it did not interfere or block the test patterns from my Oppo player.

The Klein in contact mode (wearing the hood) had no trouble reading the patterns.

There's not much out there to help you understand or navigate the TCL factory menu if you'e not a technician.
Basically, you don't want to touch the SHOP or NVM reset buttons, and once you select the white balance tool stay away from the 'White_Balance_Init' or 'Clean_Gamma' options. These buttons are meant as a reset before factory adjustment.

Using the 2-point adjustment in the hidden factory menu I was able to reduce the hump at 60% - 80% video. It seems to be the only way to balance RGB above 60% in HDR.

Oh, and picture looks great. No more red push or green tint. Best results I have gotten thus far, and I haven't even messed with color gamut yet.

I'm dumb and accidentally hit the SHOP option. Do you know what this does to the TV? I can't find any information on what this actually does, and I'm nervous as hell now.

Here are the options (Older TCL sets have more options)

1 - FAC HOTKEY: Factory hotkey switch (OFF/ON). Should be OFF after factory alignment. Default setting is OFF

2 - WARM UP: OFF - The set will enter standby mode after 15 minutes without input signal.
ON - Aging mode. Aging time will display on the left bottom of screen

3 - WHITE BALANCE: White Balance data adjustment

5 - SHOP: Reset the set after production alignment (This operation will remove all unnecessary factory value/debug information

6 - NVM RESET: Restore the system to default value (This operation will remove the white balance data. This function is only designed for R&D

7 - POWER ON: ON - Always turns on TV when AC power on STB
ALWAYS - goes into standby mode when AC power is on
LAST (DEFAULT) - Restore the status before the last AC power on

Ah, thank you for the help! Accidentally hitting the SHOP option did have some strange consequences on my television. I'm going to have to call TCL and try to figure out this problem I created.

Check the backlight setting on HDMI 1 input. The preset value is 20, as indicated by the tiny hash mark. It may now be set to 100. That's what happened in my case and it has stayed that way.

I also noticed a change in luminance in HDR. At 50% the brightness went from about 91 nits to 97 nits, so it appears something is going on, although the TV is not harmed -- as far as I can tell.

EDIT: the backlight preset value in MOVIE mode is 20; in LOW POWER it's 40.

About the Factory HotKey, the default setting is OFF, but it's ON when you open the service menu.

In ON mode, options are highlighted and you can make changes.

To exit the menu, select HotKey: OFF and press the back arrow. You can also press the home key to exit. I'm not sure if that will save the changes, if any, that you make.

I just did one of these TVs. Great performer! My biggest complaint is the lack of white balance presets. Color accuracy and contrast were excellent at any price for an LED LCD.
I kept an eye out for any problems like banding, over correction, etc and was pleased that the image was as good as I expected and then some. I made a D75 enhanced mode, a D65 reference mode, and an HDR mode. I did have to go into the SM so I had enough range with the available white balance presets to do each calibrated mode.

Gota hand it to you Chad, that's amazing work! The pre RGB balance chart, is that in Movie mode? That set was way off if that's the Movie picture mode.

You are correct, there are no WB presets for each input, which is weird, but this is a very low budget display (with outstanding performance)...so I'm glad TCL allows control of the WB thru the three color temperature settings. The problem is, only one of the color modes (Warm) calibrates accurately, there is not enough range in the other color temperatures.

It's clever of you to use the SM to calibrate SDR in Cool mode. (I'm assuming it's Cool temp setting from the CCT graph). I just started using the SM and that didn't even occur to me. I will have to try that.

I ran the color sweep and color checker on my TCL today. I'll post the gamut results later tonight when I get home.

I noticed odd behavior with the color space control on the TCL remote. Usually, when you select between Auto and Native, you'll see a change in the tone of red (on this set), with red appearing over saturated with cable content. But the control seems to stop working at times when you toggle between the color space selections, and the colors look the same, even when it shows Native on the remote.

Turning the set off and on restores the correct color space.

Edit: actually, for color space settings, I use Expert Settings on my Android device

A few plots attached. GrayScale really needed work. I found that leaving gamma alone and just balancing RGB works well. 5% video is the only place I raised gamma a bit to level off the spike at the end.

CUSTOM color space also shows improvement over the AUTO setting. Hue, saturation and luminance are better. The color checker shows slightly greater color accuracy and all colors look more natural with live content.

The TCL performs very nicely for its low price target. I'm thinking of upgrading to a larger screen size.

Edit: in the "before" saturation plot, I failed to take a magenta reading, so the graph is not completely accurate
