Maybe you are seeing more near black detail and thus the picture looks sharper?

This sharpness I'm speaking of is actually there calibrated or not. It could actually be noise. With the meter profiling, everything looks cleaner. It's like the calibration looks cleaner, if that makes any sense.

Ok, no answers on the CMS question, so which point on the 21 greyscale do you think affects skintones the most?

All of them. The gray scale/black and white parts of the picture provide the underlying image, the "structure", while the overlying colorization is provided by the color decoder/CMS. The gray scale will affect secondaries more than primaries, and since you don't (or shouldn't) have large areas of primary colors in skin tones, they are all important, from highlights down to shadows.

Thank you for the response. I tried manually cleaning up the gray scale after autocal did its thing, by making sure everything was inside the box without hanging out. I just wish I knew better how to correct errors in the CMS.

Most manufacturers' CMS implementations suck, so I gave up on that long ago. I keep my Samsung KS8000 in Auto. It isn't perfect, but it measures close enough for me.

Hello all. Just got my new A9G (Coming from the A1E) and I have noticed that the black levels seem higher in all content on the A9G. Is that normal? I wouldn't expect the newest top tier Sony model to have worse black levels than their 1st generation model.
It is fully calibrated in both Cinema and Custom Pro 1 modes.
I did calibrate them at a high brightness (around 70 FL) so could that be the issue? I used an I 1 Pro2 Spectro and Calman Home for Sony. And by all content, I mean literally all content. The A1E has darker blacks on everything that I am playing on the A9G. Verified that either are crushing with the black level flashing bar pattern from Ted's Patterns. 17 is flashing on both, but all bars look considerably darker on the A1E.

Both calibrations below were done manually with Contrast at 100% and gamma set to 0 while doing the grayscale. Contrast was dialed back to 90 while doing the CMS. CMS was done with 75%/75% Ted's Patterns with a Calman setting of "75% Only"

RGB graph was completely flat and lined up perfectly.

Gamma was perfect for EOTF curve, but
for the point gamma line graph, it was perfectly flat (with RGB breakout) except for 95% IRE which had a spike toward either 2.4 or 1.9 (can't remember which lol)

Custom mode:

Brightness MAX

Contrast 90

PL MEDIUM

Black level 50

Gamma -2 (2.4)

Color 50

2 Point Grayscale:
Only -8 Blue Gain

Color temp Expert 1
(With calibrated values)

CMS
Red -1 1 6
Magenta -3 3 7
Blue 0 1 7
Cyan 1 8 3
Green 3 4 3
Yellow -5 4 6
______________________________________

Custom for Pro 1:

Brightness 34

Contrast 90

PL HIGH

Black level 50

Gamma -2 (2.4)

Color 50

2 Point Grayscale:
Only -8 Blue Gain

Color temp Expert 2
(With calibrated values)

CMS
Red -1 1 6
Magenta -3 3 7
Blue 0 1 7
Cyan 1 8 3
Green 3 4 3
Yellow -5 4 6
