windows laptop

can i use windows 10 as a substitute for a blu ray player for calibrating using vlc? will i lose something in the encoding or anything??

so i open black clipping from avs and mp4 with vlc and every bar flashes i have to go to 41 to get 17 to barely flash which is obviously to dark if i open windows media player 54 is the correct setting

contast media player i cant even get 235 to show even with contast way down vlc well i dont care based on black clipping results man im so confused right now. do i have any options with windows 10 hooked up via hdmi to my 4k uhd hdr tv???

The level clipping you are experiencing is related with the fact that all HTPC software players are expanding by default the video signal (patterns/movies aka 16-235) to data signal (PC's are using aka 0-255), so when they are expanding, all levels 1-16 are becoming 0 and all levels 235-254 are becoming 255.

So you will never see bars below 16 to black (if you have incorrectly configured your brightness slider) or above 235 (headroom is clipped).
