I sent feedback via the report a problem function of the issues I am having.

Hopefully there will be a fix soon.

There is a quest now available in the preview app to test bitstreaming. If you say you've had problems, it asks for the brand and model of your AVR.

It asks either way. I had no problems and it asked me model numbers too. Hope you get it working though.

As of now yes. Doesn't matter anyways no streaming apps have anything besides dd 5.1. Next year games will be included if companies support it. Can't wait.

Overwatch ans titnafall were shown in the press release. I assume star wars and battlefield since it's already in the PC version

Doesn't bitstream pass through matter for apps if you want to use the surround extender on your AVR for 7.1 set ups? I don't believe it works as it is right now.

Steven,

Is it possible to invite someone to the preview? I'm a little confused about it. I have insider but I did not get the quest or preview. If it is possible to invite someone, can you invite me? Super please? My gamer tag is HobberDobberDad. I will post here my results with Atmos and DTS:X. I have a 5.1.4 system with Marantz 7010 and Vizio P series. I have the 2015 Atmos demo disk that I will run through it for testing. Thanks in advance.

... you don't have an xbox one right? if you choose bitstream we are limited to two options; dts / dolby surround. the xbox sends a signal it compresses into one of those two formats you chose. there is no real pass through at the moment.

The only pass through available is in preview, in the disc-bluray app.

Invites to the preview program is closed. The Insider program is the new way to join and hopefully direct bitstream testing will be available as well.

You got it. Direct bitstreaming is in the settings under Disc & Blu-ray->Blu-ray (it appears as "Let my receiver decode audio (beta)"). AFAIK, thus far only VUDU has Atmos sound; it doesn't matter much for anything else, if your receiver can play PCM audio. If not it will decode whatever audio format, mix in UI sounds then re-encode it into basic DD or basic DTS, probably losing something in the process. They really ought to make the option general.

The Insider program is basically the Preview program with previews of things other than the system added (apps and games); you can be part of it and turn participation in system update previews on and off. Currently on this page on Xbox.com which explains the Insider program it says:
Quote:
Because of overwhelming response and limited space, we’re not currently offering a way to invite friends to the Xbox One Update Preview. We’ll let Insiders know if this changes in the future.

This direct bitstreaming option would certainly cause a ton of invites, if they allowed it.

I've been in the preview program since the beginning, but it looks like I got booted at some point. I was able to rejoin from the Insider Hub though (says it takes 72 hours to process). Since I don't have an Atmos setup, I don't foresee any benefits from this update.

You don't need atmos to benefit. It's also for Dolby truehd and dts hd

I don't expect that there will be any sound quality difference between PCM uncompressed and bitstream, but I'll try it out.

Thanks all for the information on the Insider program. It looks like I signed up too late and I'm SOL. I will just have to wait. But thank you all for the information.

Yeah--the Xbox will decode all the formats (except the object based ones) just as well as your AVR will, so long as your sound system can accept LPCM. Many soundbars cannot and it would be better to let them deal with source audio from a disc than to have the Xbox decode and re-encode into basic DD or basic DTS. Also some stereo sound on video contains matrixed surround elements which an AVR can use to output credible surround. The Xbox will decode into PCM losing this info giving your AVR 5.1 or 7.1 channel PCM which your AVR can't do anything with. I don't know how relevant that is to discs though.

Just got the Xbox One S and had no problem playing a DD disc after changing to bitstream/Dolby Digital. Haven't tried a DTS disc yet, but do I really have to go back into settings and switch to DTS?

Unless your in the preview program set it to 7.1 lcpm out. Xbox decides to this anyway, if you set "bitstream" it compresses it (lossy) to Dolby digital.

Thanks for the heads up but at present I have an older receiver that only decodes Dolby Digital and DTS. Good to know for the future though.

Are you sure? Doing LPCM means your receiver has to work LESS- it decodes nothing.

Which one is it? I know a lot of soundbars are like this but never heard of a receiver! My $125 pioneer takes lpcm 7.1!

Working great with my Xbox One S and my Denon AVR-S920W. X-Men Apocolypse ran in Atmos and The Revenant ran in DTS-Master with no hiccups. Very pleased so far.

Is your Denon AVR not DTS:X capable? The Revenant's soundtrack is DTS:X on UHD BD; you'd get DTS-HD MA if your equipment can't handle DTS:X.

Hmmmm....good question. Pretty sure the latest firmware enabled DTS:X on my Denon so maybe I didn't notice. The Denon display sort of chops off what's playing. I'll have to double check.

I just looked at my copy of The Revenant and it says English DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1, which is what my Denon is showing when it's playing. Didn't think it was DTS:X but the 920 can do DTS:X according to the latest firmware.

This is correct. The Revenant is not DTS:X.
