The new Resident Evil 2 demo has dolby atmos. Super stocked to play it.

I played through it last night. There wasn't much if any sounds coming from the height channel. Still holding out hope that the rest of the game might have some good height movement. The bed layer was really active though.

Yeah the sound was great and great demo but I agree sounded like a 7.1 mix

if the game isn't officially atmos, tell xbox settings to do 7 lpcm or 5ch dolby or DTS and let your upmixer DolbySurround/NeuralX do the magic for you!

RE2 is Atmos - it’s just that the mixing seems lacking height

I have a 5.1.2 setup. What is consensus on non-atmos games? 5.1 or 7.1 pcm?

5.1 for your setup.

I have a 7.1.4 setup and have to switch constantly between 5.1, 7.1 and atmos.

thanks, i was leaning that way. Boy i was disappointed when i realized i was getting height channels while bitstream “atmos”

However atmos on netflix does sound good. Do u guys still recomend changing to bitstream for atmos enabled stuff correct?

Yeah, Atmos material is still very nice bitstreaming Atmos.

It's too bad MS won't give us back the ability to automatically upmix non-Atmos games and movies with Atmos bitstream, the way it should be. Although few new games have the Atmos feature, so it seems like what had a lot of potential is dying out.

Ok that takes care of me for now. Next question. Im upgrading tv to tcl series 6 (atmos passthru). My receiver (onkyo 555) does dv, 4k, hdr. What is optimal connection
1. Xbox to tv....tv to receiver via arc
2. Xbox to receiver...receiver to tv

If i choose setup 1, i could only send pcm stereo and not 5.1 pcm which isnt optimal. Id have to do bitsream?

If i do setup 2, will i be introducing input lag even with video processing off? Or Does it pass thru with no added lag?

Playing RE2 in Dolby Atmos isn't what I expected. I have 7.1.4 and objects sound good on the main channels, improvement over the PS4 as expected. However the the height channels, there's barely anything going on up there, and when it is, it's very low in sound. I had to unplug the floor channels to check. Shame really, it could've and should've been better.

Not one moment lol. Only heard height active with music, ambience. And that was with speakers unplugged.

Going to try out level adjust

Not sure if posted before, but it seems DTS:X is coming to the xbox, just like Atmos. Not only for movies, but for games, headphones, etc.

It sounds way better in 7.1 with dts:x upmixing - much better

Sounds great but since they can't even automatically switch between PCM and Atmos I wonder how they will accomplish this.

I have a 5.1.2 setup as well and ended up leaving it on 7.1 pcm (outside of switching over to Bitstream/Atmos for games that support it). The receiver will downmix to whatever your channel layout is. I always use up mixing for everything.

I’d say experiment a little with games and see if you notice a difference. I’ve found with my Denon that I get a nice phantom image behind me as if I had a 7.1 setup.

you know ive been messing with this. 7.1 i get great sound from bo4 through the height and surround. But fortnight i get nothing thru height unless i switch to 5.1. I think best option so far thru all of them is bitstream the dts to neural X.

DTS is compressed, so that is definitely not the best option. If you only have a 5.1.x setup you won't get any benifits from using 7.1 PCM either. Use bitstream Atmos for Atmos games and 5.1 PCM for all the rest.

i guess i should clarify, i meant best option without having to keep switching back and forth is the dts. Ive tested with it at 7.1 and bo4 gets great sound including height, but set to 5.1 not as much. Fortnight set to 7.1 gets nothing from the height, but 5.1 it does. (5.1.2 is my setup)

i do understand that pcm is the "better" audio quality

But DTS is also 5.1. I would assume 5.1 PCM gives you the same audio as DTS, but uncompressed.

All COD games are 5.1 only. If you set up to PCM 7.1 on Xbox, the rear channels will be silent all the time. I have tested it couple times. There is no reason to use DTS (limited to 5.1 and extra lossy compression to cause quality loss) if you use HDMI for audio. My receiver allows me to up-mix using DTS:X for LPCM signals.

So are all backward compatible Xbox and Xbox 360 games, and 5.1 Netflix shows. And I thought someone here said RDR2 is also 5.1. It doesn't only causes the rear channels to be silent when set to 7.1, but also messes up DSU or Neural:X upmixing. I assume this is also the case when you only have a 5.x.x setup.

Great, thanks for the heads up -- added it to the OP under "coming soon". Hope it has a great sound mix to go along with the native 4k w/ HDR.

Currently have Xbox X, Sony X9000F 2.1ch Sound bar with Dolby Atmos and Wireless Subwoofer (HT-X9000F), and Sony X900F tv.

Am I correct in having the Xbox plugged into the sound bar for Dolby Atmos to work? That is my current setup. Or should my Xbox be plugged into my X900F tv, and use HDMI -arc from TV to the sound bar?
