Yes, you are correct.

Has anyone noticed a sound bug with a recent One X update?
With a recent Xbox one x update 1902.190131-1620 when starting Gears of War 4 a very loud short high-pitched (burst) sound occurs. It happens when I start GoW after rebooting the xbox and sometimes when launching GoW after standby.

FYI, Crackdown 3 is dead silent in the ceiling speakers. Even unplugged all my other speakers to make sure. I don’t know if it’s a bug but it’s not been addressed anywhere that I’ve seen.

Yup, I mute the sound when I start up GoW4 until I get to the title screen with JD. Sound hits sometime just before that.

Yep been reported. If you enable atmos you only get stereo sound. Day 1 bug, no patch yet.

Strangely enough I was getting 5.1 sound when I tested this. Music in the menu was only stereo but I believe this to be by design (a lot of games are like this).

Thanks for the report, I'll update the OP.

Anyone playing Metro Exodus and can report on Atmos implementation?

Wow, I was only getting 2.0! When I switched to 7.1 out my DTSx kicked in and it rocks

According to my experience the Dolby Atmos "Dolby Surround Upmixer" is very good for 2.0 sound program content, but for other multi-channel encodings the DTS upmixer (in AV receivers) is still worth comparing.

This isn't a feature, it's a workaround for their broken Atmos implementation. Wich itself was a workaround for a bug in their original implementation.

I'm all for internal Atmos upmix for non-Atmos sources.

Yeah, this eliminates the ability to automatically switch from DTS Neural X upmix to native Atmos for those sources, but if Dolby Labs is behind the feature, hopefully it will be implemented well. And DTS upmix is still available outside the Atmos bitstream.

I wonder if this will increase or reduce the amount of native Atmos games in the future?

I have yet to hear a native atmos game that sounds better than 7.1 out with dts X upmixing. It’s like the extra hight emphasis and extra bass really seems to add something to games

Even SOTTR seems more “immersed” in the caves than the native

Any Metro Exodus Reviews yet? Looking to get this game just for the fact it's a FPS and atmos enabled.

According to Steven Wilssens, audio lead at Microsoft, "Absolutely in love with @Metro VideoGame on PC. We played it with spatial turned on in the sound settings in my office with Dolby Atmos for HT and one of the youngo PMs screamed. #sendhelp "
Though it's not native Atmos it uses Microsoft's Spatial Sound plaform which supports output to Atmos

xbox getting Atmox upmixing; pros and cons. (Is it the same as Dolby Surround atmos upmixing in receivers now?)

pro: people with setups that only accept DolbyAtmos signals (soundbars, non-receivers, etc) can now do atmos upmixing.

pro: you can turn upmixing off if you wish.

con: with upmixing so prevalent; will developers stop making true Atmos games? That would be a shame.

Right now; I listen to most Atmos from blu ray and 4K UHDs. true games Atmos is a shortlist.

So most games i play 5.1 or 7.1 LPCM and upmix to DSU or NeuralX; which sounds fantastic!!

i am 5.1.4 on receiver.

That's the question, and yes it would be a shame.

Still, with the lack of native Atmos titles lately, it looks like it was going in that direciton anyway. *sigh*

I think it all depends on Dolby right now. If they can develop tools to help game developers I can see it not going away. What game developer wants to spend more money, time, and training on something for a small %.

Later I can write something more detailed but I've been playing Metro Exodus and it's been a real treat. While some times the atmos can come off weird like voices of NPC right in front of you coming though the height speakers. There are some crazy times where it's perfect for what's going on with Multi levels and Enemys engaging you from various locations. You can tell where each of them are.

Any word on how the Division Beta was with Atmos?

I think you nailed it on the head. I imagine those of use that like it are the small minority and have a decent setup. Hell most of my friends rather just deal with a soundbar and call it a day.

Anyone hear of when the Dolby Atmos upmixing update will come to the xbox insiders at the beta level/release?
Also, for those who have it on the alpha release, what are your thoughts so far?

I'm curious myself. I think my only 646 has issues when I run the audio output as bitstream. I get bad Audio drops playing games. Leaving it at 7.1 uncompressed I have no issues at all

I best most who received the update don't have atmos setups and the ones who do don't even know about the upmixing switch

I don't recall what update version it is exactly, i don't have my xbox in front of me.
I just got another update yesterday on the Beta level, and i still don't see the "upmixing" switch in the audio menus.
Really curious as to how well it does compared to outputting 5.1/7.1 uncompressed and letting my receiver do it.

Also, I just got the Division 2 and have been playing in Atmos. Not noticing a crazy level of activity in the height channels.
Anyone else playing this with atmos can give their take?

I personally think my experience has been better leaving the output as 5.1/7.1 uncompressed and using the DTS X: Neural upmixing.
The sounds i hear in my height channels may not be 100% accurate like a legit atmos signal would be, but they sure are more active and feels more immersive.

Brooooo. I have the 190312 update. I just started up Apex. Now, I'm certain this game isn't Dolby Atmos because why would it be, it doesn't even have HDR support.

I fire up the game, start the tutorial and I am listening to the instructors voice hit the surround back channels. I'm like huh. As I turn the camera, I can hear his voice which appears to be an object, hit accurately every point in space. As I shoot targets, I hear the spacious reverb of my shots. So I have to get a chair to check the height channels, sure enough, they are firing!

I will test more, but I think it's here boys!

Update, I've tried Odyssey and pubg as well. All 3 games, I get sounds out of Top fronts, but no sound whatsoever in Top rear. Work still needs to be done.

After coming from a previous 5.1 Sony soundbar, boy did that leave me wanting to see much more information on the unit and onscreen. The Denon certainly delivered. I'm not familiar with other AVR but I'll take your word on it. Denon isn't the prettiest but it does it's job.

Would you be able to compare the xbox up mix vs the denon upmix and see if there is a difference between the two?
