I wouldn't be surprised is user disruption mid day on a work/school day is actually about on par with early morning disruption and it has the benefit of having the most staff currently scheduled as well as probably better support from any partners they have to work with to complete the upgrades.

Even at $30 to $40 it can be less expensive with that and a 3.5 inch hard drive. So you could put a 3TB,7200rpm, 3.5" hard drive in there for $90. Plus the $40 for the Nyko device and you've only hit $130. While if you tried to add a 3TB 2.5" drive, you couldn't do it. Because I don't think they exist yet. And if they do, they would cost much more.

Somewhere I read that this thing is just a USB adder so its not really anything but storage but I cannot figure out where I read it. May have just been a comment on Kotaku or something.

Edit: I take that back. Totally misread Kotaku when I skimmed it...they said the PS4 does support USB drives but not for holding game installations. Need to stop skimming so much...

It can't be connected to the USB port. If it was then we could an external hard drive. My guess is it replaces the top plastic you remove to put in the hard drive and it will either have a cable or maybe you slide it in to connect it.

I think its ugly but then again you can't really see my PS4 so this could be a potential option. Not sure if I trust Nyko enough though,

I know, misread that by a mile. I couldn't reconcile where the USB would have plugged in but I read the article super fast and didn't put much thought into it. Was one of my, hey thats cool...shrug...moments.

I'd be curious on heat dissipation. I know its on top of the small drive cavity (lol see sexual, just like we talked last night) but that's still a big honkin' drive spinning. I wouldn't be worried about the PS so much as the drive feeding heat off the PS if there's any kind of chimney effect through the case.

Meh, the PS4 doesn't produce nearly enough heat to matter.

If you don't mind keeping the cover off your PS4 or drilling a hole into it, you could always just run an external drive and use an adapter to connect it to the internal sata header.

When I had a PS3, I used a Thermaltake MobileFan (pic) to circulate air. It is variable speed and does a great job circulating air and is quiet. I probably don't need it for the PS4 but still use it on a low speed since I don't use the PS4 USB slots and you cannot see it in my cabinet.

Did you get the external or just the hard drive? I'll be doing mine tonight too, once I get this MFer out of the case.

If it were me...and may soon be, since I'm short on space, I'd just replace the internal one. Much simpler, about the same price, less ugly stuff attached to my box, and feeling less filthy that I'd somehow ruined my PS4

Ok, so I got this thing opened. It wasn't that hard, once I got it going. I just tried to pry the cover off the corner with my fingernail and it allowed me to use this center cap removal tool that came with my wheels to do the rest. Really simple once it got going. Don't know how it took the dude in the youtube video nearly 10 minutes to do it, lol.

This is the tool I used:

To recap, this is what I'm talking about:

Pulled the 2 TB drive out of this external, since it's $15 cheaper that way and you can use the external case for your current PS4 500 GB drive.

I will be popping this sucker into my PS4 tonight.

But is there any warranty on the drive removed from the external case? I thought they usually know the serial numbers for the drives in the enclosures. So if there is any type of warranty claim won't they deny it?

I went with a 1TB Hitachi 7200 rpm drive last Spring in my PS4. But I just bought the bare drive.

Yeah, that's the slow, expensive and nice looking way to do it. Just throwing the cheap, fast and ugly option out there.

Yes, you can buy the Samsung slim external HD and take the housing off and put it in the PS4 but I prefer not to. I bought both the internal and external since I need an external HD to store home stuff on.

True, I was cleaning out the garage the other day and found a couple external HD from Western Digital that are the size of a brick and its only 500GB.

That was a pain in the ass. Took 2 hours after I could not pair the controllers, the ps4 would not recognize my usbs, then only by accident did I discover there is a larger download file for complete reinstallation. Meh

I wonder what the reasoning is for not being able to use an external hard drive to store and run your games and apps . Was the PS3 capable of utilizing one?

I do like the external hard drive and USB support on Xbox. Tonight I can play How to Train Your Dragon for the kids from a USB on it. Nice feature I'd like to see on the PS4.

Everything seems to be working with the new hard drive after some hiccups. The first time restarting the ps4 after the installation I had to reinput all of the start up info like wifi, etc., which worried me, but the second startup seems to have taken. Reinstalling all of my games and saves tonight. It's cool to see all that room on the drive. I was uninstalling quite a few games before to make room for new ones, but no more! Well, until I fill this one up...
