So only two years for the PS4 Pro?

I would think in two years they will have a Die shrink for the PS4 Pro. It will certainly need it.

They said "next week" last week - so sometime this week, unless they run into bugs. And I'd certainly rather they iron out the bugs before issuing the patch, rather than a series of patches to fix it.

In terms of the disc player, that really shouldn't have been a surprise. Outside of the kinds of people who frequent the AVS forums, most people never use discs at all* - if they can't stream it, they'll watch something else. Cheap UHD disc players will be out soon/eventually, and if they never become cheap, then Sony was doubly right for not including it in the PS4 Pro and having to charge extra to do so.

The vast majority of potential PS4 users a) don't care about UHD functionality, and b) would be less likely to buy a PS4 Pro if the price was higher because Sony put a UHD drive in.

Personally, I wish there was a UHD drive in the PS4 Pro - it would make me more likely to buy one. But Sony made the right call, business-wise.

*with the possible exception of child pacification via something like Thomas The Tank Engine for 500+ viewings, and at that point a DVD is fine.

The 4.00 update is out now - Includes HDR but still not sure if its for games or streaming content. Will just have to check my own PS4 to see how HDR works if at all. Most likely its for only a few games that DEVs may feel inclined to patch up and that's it. For real glory, you gotta buy the PRO.

So HDR is turned on in Video settings but obviously no HDR on Amazon 4K content (Youtube doesn't even support HDR yet on any platform) as the app needs to be updated as well but Netflix did receive an update recently, can anybody check if that's producing HDR on there?

HDR on current PS4 is strictly for games
apps like netflix and vudu require hdmi 2.0a w/ hdcp 2.2 connections (current PS4 only hdmi 1.4) and their content is HDR10 or Dolby Vision 4k, which obviously wouldn't play on current PS4 systems (only on the Pro and XboneS)

So is there any way to test this HDR update with something on the PS4? If not what was the point of enabling it now?

I don't think PS4's game HDR will do anything at all, period. From what I understand, HDR will be patched and included in the future ONLY for PRO copies of the games and not standard. I hope I am wrong though.

According to this http://blog.us.playstation.com/2016/...-out-tomorrow/, every PS4 will have HDR. My question is if the older PS4s will be able to stream 4k. Thought I read the hardware was there (HDMI 2.0), but not the firmware.

Older PS4s support only 1080p, not 4k. You will need a Pro to do anything in 4k.

Thought I read it somewhere. Was just hoping to compare the HDR 4k on my samsung amazon app to the one on the ps4 (the whites are blown out on some shows). xbox-s is on my shopping list.

No "pro" copies of a game will exist. There will only be one version of a game. The game will scale depending on the system it's run on. Some current games are being patched, such as The Last of Us Remastered. 4K or HDR will depend on the console it's being run on, not whether or not you've bought the "pro" version of the game because there won't be one.

Good news about the 4.0 update: HDMI CEC seems to be working reliably now. Prior to the 4.0 update, the PS4 only seemed to turn on if it was within a certain amount of time from putting it into rest mode. Now it seems to turn on anytime.

Hi All,
I was wondering if someone could help me with the best possible way to connect my devices?
I just purchased a PS4 Slim (4.0 update for HDR) that I have connected to a Marantz SR 5008 receiver via HDMI which is connected to my Vizio M50-C1 to HDM! input 1, would I be better connecting receiver to HDMI 5 on Vizio to get [email protected]??

And is there any settings I would have to turn on any of the devices to get 4K??

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Paddy

PS4 Slim doesn't do 4k, so that shouldn't matter unless that is the only input that supports HDR. (There is no actual HDR capable content yet, though).

Does the Slim even do 4K in any form at all?

I thought the Slim's feature set is identical to the launch unit within a smaller form factor.

No 4K capabilities on OG PS4 or the PS4 Slim (same exact console as Vanilla PS4) and no Native 4K capabilities for games on the PS4 PRO, mostly they'll be upscaled to 4K.

HDR on the old PS4: No games, no streaming, just a useless menu option
4K pairs with HDR and "there aren't any current plans to change that," says Netflix.

http://arstechnica.co.uk/gaming/2016...media-useless/

I don't know why anyone would have expected HDR with the OG or slim PS4(outside of game capability) when they are not 4K devices. I don't get why they even bothered to test for HDR knowing Netflix only does HDR with 4K shows.

The 5.0 is here

I think people think that because Sony announced and patched original PS4 for HDR just to market it as HDR capable even though it's totally useless simply because HDR is the new buzz word.

It's not totally useless, it's waiting for content. There's a difference. And thinking that Sony went to that effort (which I can assure you cost them money in engineering resources, testing, customer support, etc) as a bullet point is bordering on conspiracy theory logic. That said any confusion about whether it is games or streaming have been cleared up now, it's just games.

Gotta love Ars "don't read too much into it" Technica!
