Hmm...

I currently have a Beats Music subscription but I may move over to Spotify for this.

Sony is also killing Music Unlimited.

I hope this means they'll also add support for DLNA or some form of local network streaming. I have no need for a streaming music service, I collect movie score albums and these services have very little of that type of music, especially older classical scores. I own everything I listen to so, I just want to be able to access my music that I own on my PS4 (like I could last gen on the PS3/360). At the very least, let me copy my music to the PS4 HDD, which is what I did last gen.

Glad Music Unlimited failed, I still believe that the only reason the PS4 did not support mp3 playback at launch was because Sony was trying to funnel users to that horrible music service (I used my free trial, it sucked).

^This. Sony continues to neglect all those who actually buy and listen to music as complete CD/MP3 albums rather than as playlists, which I have no time to create in a way that I won't quickly tire of them. The PS4 remains the only device with an optical disc drive in my house that doesn't allow CD audio playback. It's also the only network-connected console device in my house that doesn't allow DLNA streaming. Heck, even my two-year-old Sony blu-ray player I bought for $89 allows it.

EDIT: Come to think of it, the PS4 is the only device I own that has an internal hard drive or flash memory of 1 GB or more that doesn't allow audio playback directly from that memory storage ... and that includes a pre-paid burner cell phone.

Yes. Hopefully Sony will enable CD, MP3 and DLNA with a firmware update after MU goes the way of the dodo. I agree wholeheartedly that Sony didn't include these services in order to attempt to get the subscriptions up on Music Unlimited. I'm also glad it didn't work. I tried MU out for a few months some years ago when I first got a PS3 and never could find any of my favored artists on there, so I never touched it again.

The addition of Spotify is great news, as I already have a Spotify account and have my playlists setup. Hopefully they add it to the VITA as well.

While this would be somewhat tempting to me as I stated in my first post, Spotify's days are numbered.

Enabled premium on my pc. I might have to start using Google Play Music. There is a pretty big difference in audio quality vs Music Unlimited. Whats the best way to steam Google Play Music? Audio Quality is very important.

If you have an iPhone or iPad, gMusic 2 is really good.

I tried the new Spotify app for my ps3 and 4 today however I wasn't able to find a way to change the audio settings or quality settings. Is the Spotify audio on the ps3 and 4 limited to stereo only? The MU app played in 5.1 from what i remember. Anyone else having this problem or know of a way to fix it?

I changed the quality settings on my PC after I downloaded Spotify. I did not see a quality setting on the Spotify PS3 app. Maybe someone here can share their PS3 audio settings. Music Unlimited wins in audio quality I would say. The Spotify app on the PS3 is hard for me to use. Logging in to Spotify on my PC as a second screen works better but I dont see myself staying with Spotify after the trial 2 months ends. I think Google Play Music is the way to go with better audio quality.

On the ps4, it played in 2ch if you have your settings set on lpcm, but when I changed it to bitstream, it showed dolby digital and all channels were active, but I think it just flags dolby digital and isn't true dolby digital because it sounded like 2ch being played through dolby pro logic ii. I prefered the lpcm setting, but there wasn't anything of high quality to justify a premium subscription. Then again, I only went through a few songs, but they all playback in dolby digital and im not sure if it is suppose to or if there are certain songs that are specifically mixed in 5.1 that properly flag dolby digital and others in 2ch, not sure, first time using it.

What's odd, with my audio set to PCM on the PS4, I got 5.1 speakers showing on my receiver, but it was only coming out of two speakers. This prevented me from using my audio receiver's surround decode modes like I can with Pandora, which I stream from another device. Another thing that blows is unlike free Pandora, which gives me a one short commercial once every 30-45 minutes, with free Spotify, I get a commercial after every 1 or 2 songs, though so far the commercial is the same one on upgrading to premium. I also don't see a way to access a radio mode with this app.

I am a 5 year Pandora One subscriber. I did not know about Spotify coming to the PS3. I am on the 1 month free trial. It's amazing so far. I just want to ensure I am getting the best quality I can. I also stangely don't see settings anywhere to adjust the sound quality.
Pandora sounds awesome via my Directv. But Spotify has a big potential to sound better. If there is no settings for "extreme" quality, that could be a deal breaker. Any input?

All I know is that they say the app will be improved over time, so I could see that as a potential feature. Sony did improve the audio quality (added settings on the PS3 app) of its Music Unlimited service during the time I had it.

As a premium Spotify sub, do you see a radio mode in the PS4 app? That's a deal breaker for me since I'm not one to fuss with creating playlists. I want it to work like Pandora.

I know there is a radio mode for my iPhone app and it is suppose to also control the PS app. Going to try it when I get home today. I have the PS3, and they did an amazing job with the app right from the start. Can't believe they left out "quality setting".
Spotify does have all kinds of pre made playlist even as "mood" settings. You can see the full playlist and even skip, rewind and replay songs. Makes Pandora look like dated technology. I just want to make sure I am getting the 320 quality. That is a big part of why I would be paying for the service.

Just tried the control connect for my iPhone and iPad. It works flawlessly. Very cool. No way to contact Spotify about not having sound quality settings on the Playstation. At least you could contact Pandora and get an answer.

It's my understanding that if you have the premium service the audio quality default is 'extreme quality' but the 2.1 format makes it hard for me to tell. I use my PS3 as a jukebox @320 via a 7.2 speaker setup. There are literally no audio controls on the PS app which blows my mind! Not sure why given there were several key features left off the PS4. I've tried all 3 audio options on the PS4 and none allow my AVR to upconvert the 2.1 to all speakers. Haven't tried adjusting the AVR settings but don't believe i should need to given every source ive ever run through it upconverts to 7.2. I'll try bitstream on the PS3 and see if i have any luck with that.

I'm an album listener and am used to using Spotify on my desktop. Am I missing something, I can't find a way to list my music by Albums?

On another note, the resume feature is awesome. I've been playing some Grand Theft Auto, and to be able to jump right back into the game where I left off saves so much time.

Wait, 320 kbps is considered "extreme" quality by Spotify? Now I don't mind 320, it's what I encode all my mp3s at but, I'd never refer to it as extreme, that would be reserved for something like FLAC or another lossless format.

Anyway, I was playing around with Spotify a little last night. I've never used the service and was curious about there classical and soundtracks collection, which seems ok but not great. I declined the 30 day trial for the premium service, I'll never be willing to pay so I didn't want to get use to those features, so I stuck with the free service. It says I will hear ads and will have a limited number of skips per hour but so far I have hear no ads and have been able to skip as much as I want. How often are ads suppose to play? I know I have a "free" account because it says so under my profile but, so far I haven't heard a single ad. Just trying to see if the ads would be to annoying or intrusive, since Sony still doesn't provide me a simple way to play the music I already own through my PS4.

By not hearing ads are you including the spots to promote the premium upgrade? As I posted above, I was hearing those after every one or two songs, sometimes the same ad running 2-3 times in a row during the interruption. However, I never heard a third-party ad in the few hours that I've used the app.

I have mine set to import audio using AAC @ 320 which provides better quality than mp3 @320. You can find that under sound settings...or system settings. Can't remember exactly but it's there.

Lol, yes 'extreme' is considered 320 by Spot...96 is their low bitrate. Their 2nd teir is 160 and extreme is considered 320. Maybe the new Tidal service will offer a lossless audio. I read their premium package is $20/month....I'll bite if they offer lossless audio!

Anyone notice the volume level is very low on the app? I listen to CDs and other music anywhere from -20 to -16, and that's pretty loud. With this app on PS4, the same volume setting is much quieter.

Also, not sure about the sound quality. I played a few songs, and it didn't sound that great to me. I have a premium membership.

Nope...

Sounds clear as a bell on my setup.

I've never used Spotify before deciding to give it a go last night on the PS4. It was pretty awesome being able to play music and MLB The Show at the same time. Is the offline listening mode legit if you subscribe?

Spotify wrote me back through Facebook and on the Playstation as a premium customer it is automatically streamed at the 320kbps. Something I have noticed is the large change in volume on different songs. Pandora does not have that issue.
Anyone try the optic connection and yield any difference in sound quality? I have a couple really good quality optic cables sitting around.
