Important thing to note is that SONY is coming up with their stand alone UHD player in 2017 so this actually makes sense... though many consumers will feel disappointed by this no UHD PS4 move.

My guess is that Sony UHD drive was not ready. Expect a new PS4 Pro revision next year that will add the UHD drive when Scorpio release.

Welcome to the Xbox One S family.

So some of us waited all that time for an overdue UHD BD player from Sony for - nothing.

Hard to believe - the only company that has been manufacturing 4K home theater front projectors (until the JVC Z1) has not been able to present a UHD BD player, yet.

It is 10 years later not sure why anyone keeps comparing 2006 to today's options. Streaming took over what BR was supposed to do. BR still didn't take over DVD and UHD BR isn't going to do any better. Streaming continues to be the more popular option and it is obvious. AVS of course we care about the highest quality. 95 percent of consumers care about convenience. Streaming and Sound Bars are prime examples.

....which, however, hasn't invited Dolby Atmos or DTS:X to its house. No Bitstream output of these extra audio data.

Welcome to the Xbox One S family.
I return my Xbox One S to get ready for Today's event and no mention of UHD Blu-ray support , I was will to wait till November get the new PlayStation 4 but now Sony leaves no choice but to buy the Xbox One S.

Very Disappointed.

Too bad they botched that release with the lack of DTSX/Atmos and dual HDMI out.

Maybe Sony will add an external UHD BD drive like the XBox 360 did for HD-DVD?

And there went my interest in this console. I was ready to sell my PS4 and upgrade. What the flip? Isn't the Xbox One S an UHD Blu-ray player? What the hell is Sony thinking? Have they decided not to support UHD Blu-ray? They haven't released, or announced a standalone player either.

So dumb. They shouldn't have even come out with the new gen until 4K/UHD was finalized, and now they are late to the party and both Microsoft and Sony have sub-par entries. But since the machines don't have the power for 4K anyway, its really just a marketing smokescreen.
