No release date, they're just announcing that it's in development.

“If the first game was really about the love between these two characters, this story is the counter of that,” Druckmann explained early on. “This is story is about hate, through Ellie this time. The first game you play as Joel, this game you play as Ellie.”

Ellie is now 19, and the years spent surviving the collapse of civilization have taken their toll.

...

With regard to worries that a sequel could somehow risk degrading the integrity of the original’s ambiguous ending, Druckmann said, “You have to understand that no one loves these characters more than we do, and we would not do this if we didn’t feel like we didn’t have the right idea.”

“All I ask is that fans of the first one put some faith in us, trust we’re going to do right by them.” he continued. Druckmann also shared some concept art for TLOU2, and confirmed that Gustavo Santaolalla would be returning to score the new game.

I'm definitely one of the people that would have preferred they had left Joel & Ellie's story alone, but I also trust Druckmann to do what he thinks is right for the characters*. And, of course, I think at this point Naughty Dog doesn't have to do a sequel just to make money. I'm in.

*although, on second thought, he really turned Nathan Drake into a jerk in Uncharted 4.

Sold! I just hope they keep the gameplay/story balance the first one has and not pull what they did with Uncharted 4 making a dramatic shift away from actual gameplay.

Wow, how did I miss this news? I'm really curious which direction they are going with the story. I have several scenarios running through my head right now (won't post just in case someone hasn't finished the first game). No question a day one purchase for me. The Last of Us is one of my top games of all time for me personally.

Same here, the gameplay is so satisfying and visceral with an excellence story on top of it. They hooked with me with Uncharted and keep churning out great games. Even though Uncharted 4 disappointed me with how little combat there is, what combat it does have is fantastic with great level design. The visuals/art style on both series is fantastic as well.

Straley is on a year-long sabbatical and is confirmed not attached to the project. I think they'll manage though.

The PS4 version of the 1st is really well done if you want to relive the original if you do end up picking up a PS4.

^ Seconded. It's gorgeous, and the frame rate's silky smooth, even to someone like me who rarely notices frame rate. I think it uses the Uncharted 4 engine - they worked out the bugs in the engine by building an existing game in it.

I don't understand how the ending could be called ambiguous. It was pretty clear to me.

The ambiguity is in whether Ellie believes Joel, or whether she knows he's lying but accepts that. I'm on the Ellie's-not-that-dumb side.

She would have had to demonstrate being really naive earlier in the game for anybody to take the stance she doesn't know, she demonstrated quite the opposite. She knows he is lying.

I have a slightly different take. I think she's willing to take what Joel says at face value without looking deeper. Deep down I think she knows it can't be true, but this gives her a layer of plausible deniability she can accept. It's her accepting Joel's statement "we do what it takes to survive" which in this case is not looking too close to confirm what she doesn't want to know.

As an aside the teaser was amazing, just a touch of that music and I start tearing up. Ellie being older and the ambiguity of what is going on have my mind going wild with speculation. Going to be a long wait for this one!

Definitely a possibility.

It is going to be a long wait! I can't wait to see the environments and everything else new.

Yeah, that always struck me as a possibility. Ellie's a tough kid who's lived through brutal times (if anyone hasn't played Left Behind, you really need to), but she's still a kid who clearly wants a parental figure; there are always times when we'll take what we need to hear over the actual truth. I'm perfectly happy living with the ambiguity and saying I don't know, but I love how well Naughty Dog pulled off that ending (although I kind of hated the hospital assault sequence that led up to it).

And, yes, so glad that Gustavo Santaolalla's confirmed to be back as soundtrack composer. That spare, haunting music was unbelievably perfect for the first game.

Trust me, its tempting but seeing as I just spent several thousand to setup my 1080p projection home theater....i am not gonna buy any new consoles until I have a 4k/hdr display which is gonna be a several years.

You and me both . At least we have some games to tide us over in the meantime... my backlog still sucks and it's going to get buried even further next year. LOL. First world problems...

My guess would be between the fall of 2018 to spring 2019. When the game was revealed last year, Naughty Dog was still very early in development. I imagine that's one of the reasons we didn't see anything new at E3 this year.

The weird thing is ... with these suggested release dates, the PS4 might be at the end of it's life. And since the "PS5", or whatever the name will be; probably won't be backwards compatible like the earlier consoles, timing seems weird ...

My Home Theater setup:
Picture:
Benq W2000 (HT3050) // 130" DIY AT-screen // Sony UHP-H1 // PS3
Sound: Pioneer VSX-AX2AV (7.1) // Infinity Beta 50/C360/ES250, Mission 737R, Dynavoice Thunder T-12 // Sinus Live BassPump III

I'm sure the next generation PS console will play PS4 games. If the PS5 comes out in 2019-2020 as most analysts are predicting, the PS4 Pro will become the base model.
