Got this disc, which is a new UK Blu-ray release.

I have a region A PS3 but the disc progresses to the menu and plays the move fine - no region lock warning.

However when trying to access the extra features - such as trailer etc the machine just goes straight back to the menu after hitting enter.

Is there anyone with a Region B machine who could test this?

The only thing I can think of is that the extra features are encoded at 25fps and that the PS3 refuses to play them being an NTSC machine. Or is it a bug?

Why did Sony block region free PAL DVD playback anyway??? I'm sure the hardware is well capable of both formats.

I got a friend to test this on a Region B PAL machine and no problems with the extra features.

There's no need for this - not a region issue but seemingly the machine not playing PAL MPEG-2 sequences...

Note that while the US PS3 will not play a PAL DVD (region free or not) it quite happily plays the same DVD if ripped as a VOB file served up from a DLNA server like Tversity. That's what makes it so crazy. The restriction is purely compliance, not technical.

There are region free PAL and NTSC releases.

I cannot understand Sony's logic regarding restriction of playback.

Is it illegal to import an overseas region-free title only to find it won't play because of this stupid restriction?

Even worse, as stated above, it seems to be restricting certain Bluray titles from functioning correctly.

I think I will approach Sony about this issue to see what they have to say.
